  1. Hi, I'm hoping someone can offer any advice or point me to an organization that can help. The story is as follows, rightly or wrongly. I sent BG a letter stating they have 28 days to object or I would commence with having my own meter installed into the property under Schedule 7 Electricity Act 1989. They failed to object so I commenced, Had the meter installed August this year. I provided meter serial numbers, start readings etc etc to BG. Then a chap requested to inspect the meters at 9pm Monday night (10/11/14) which I let him do, he said it was unsafe and then had an engineer come and remove the meter, he said he wouldn't be putting in their meter or a pay as you go meter. I called BG the next morning and they are refusing to install a payg meter untill we pay £1,400.26p. They said it is a second offence, Wrongly I know I did do something before. I have scraped together £800. But they wont budge... I understand if people call me a thief, fine, fair does.... I did this with the full reading of the Electricity Act 1989 which states at schedule 7 that I could have my own meters installed. Did I interpreted that act incorrectly? Are there any charities that can help liaise with BG?
  2. Hi, I recently noticed on my credit file some late payment markers from British Gas for electricity and gas accounts. The markers were on Feb/Mar/Apr 2012 and were showing as being 1, 2 and 3 months late respectively. I was not aware of these late payments being marked against my credit file. However a bit of history on this: in 2010 my flat that I rented to my tenant caught on fire (well the one next door but it destroyed the roof of the entire tenement building). This gutted my flat and left everything inside it destroyed including boiler, gas meter, elec meter etc, everything was shut off by the council building control. Building control closed the building and nobody was allowed in. My tenant at this point cancelled the contract with British Gas. After several years of arguing to get it fixed (tenements and 11 different flats and insurance do not mix well) we eventually got to the point where the builders were let in to start work and started getting the place fixed, obviously at some point this included hooking in to the elec and gas supply again and installing boilers etc. This was (unknown to me) reconnected around Dec 2011. I then got access to the building in April 2012 where I noticed some letters from British Gas & their debt collection agencies, apparently a bill of £79 has been late and I was due to pay it. I paid the bill as soon as I got it, but I never actually signed any credit agreement with British Gas as there was no supply to the flat. I don't actually know how they got the bill in my name. Is it therefore fair that they are allowed to place late payment markers on my account? I argued my point with them via the CRA, the accepted and removed the late payment marker for electricity, but refused for the Gas, not sure what the difference was. I then lodged a complaint with British Gas directly who are still looking in to the matter, but having just came off the phone they state that the house owner is automatically signed up to their account when no other account holder is around and that this is legally binding, that may well be the case, but does that also stand for the credit agreement part? I find that hard to believe. Anyway they are still looking in to it. I am worried about how it may affect my upcoming mortgage application, everything else is clean on my credit file. Cheers G
  3. Hello, in early february i was involved in a gas explosion in clacton, essex. Many would have seen it on the news channels. I was driving past with my two children when the explosion happened. My daughter suffered, still is, with neck and back pain and i have shoulder and ear problems. My car was written off. The insurer Direct Line said the car was worth £650 and they have sent me a cheque for £250 as they are stopping paying my excess of £400. This apparently is because they cannot prove liability....my god a house blew up, i have a fair idea that it wasn't my fault. we also have contacted a solicitor on a no win no fee basis for the personal in jury suffered by my daughter and myself. My question is, i have heard that the old people that were living in the house that exploded had no form of insurance on the property, is this the reason why i am being denied the payment of my excess? Also what will happen with the no win no fee solicitors if it is true that the householders had no insurance?
  4. Hi, thanks for taking the time to read my post, I will try to keep a long annoying complex matter as simple as possible. When we moved in to our flat approx. 6 year ago I called BG to set up account and they insisted they didn't supply our gas, I tried on more than one occasion and they still said they do not supply us. Last October we finally got a bill that said our meter reading was 000000. In January it was still 00000, suddenly by March it was pushing £1000! I know we were very lucky it took them so long to actually bill us however the meter is now working double time it would seem and we are now pushing a bill of £2000. Since March I have requested that I pay £40 per month towards the gas while they look at the meter as I am quite sure we have not used that much gas since January, we live in a small two bed flat, the place heats up quickly once we have our tumble dryer on and cooker, we have not even had to use our heating yet this Winter. So we are only using gas for the hot water as the oven is electric. I keep opening complaints with them to request that they look at our meter and the way the meter has been connected as we are a large block I fear we are now being charged for some other flats usage also. They keep closing my complaints and saying I did nt reply in time although I did, every one of them I email never actually answers my questions and fobs me off, I really do want this sorted as it is stress I really don't need. We have our electric account with them which is also high (but understandably as we use it a lot) surely they can see I am not making a fuss over nothing as I pay that in full each month, but I am so sure there is a problem with the gas meters - obviously given it has read for 00000 for years ! Any help/support/advice would be very welcome, BG are just not listening to me. I am happy to pay them, just what is fair and right! Thank you in advance x
  5. I successfully prevented a warrant of entry being granted for a disputed electricity bill earlier this year, quoting the Electricity Act 1989, section 6. I am in a similar position with gas at the moment but can't seem to find an equivalent act for gas, which clearly states a warrant cannot be issued when a bill is in dispute. Scottish Power have ignored letters and emails regarding a wrong charge for a very long time and are now seeking a warrant since I stopped paying their bills in protest. Is there a similar act which I can quote, other than the 1954 act, which doesn't have a specific section to spell out when a warrant can not be issued? If not would quoting the 1989 act be valid? Thanks in advance.
  6. Hi, I've had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with British Gas customer services since January to date. They're aggressive, ignorant, incompetent and disconnected in many ways, to the extent that their collections team are unable to view things going on with the account in the billing team. Its clear that I'm getting nowhere with them by complaining, so I've resorted to: Transferring to Ovo (Who have been brilliant so far) Spreading the word and telling everyone I know about Ovo. Most significantly though, I have raised two e-petitions on the government website to force British Gas into improving their services. One has been accepted and one has just been submitted. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Energy Suppliers Service Related Charging Responsible department: Department for Energy and Climate Change I would like the government to impose a mechanism upon the Energy industry whereby a company's charges are determined by the levels of service they provide, as with the Water Industry & SIM (Service Incentive Mechanism). This would force the likes of British Gas with a 39% customer satisfaction rating (Which? 28/04/14) to concentrate on improving their services to customers. --- ******** http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/64429 ********** --- Recently, 'British Petroleum' embarrassed our nation with their disaster in America. 'British Gas' currently have a 39% Customer Satisfaction Rating from a 'Which?' survey. I would like the government to licence the use of the name 'British' in company names to ensure that any company using it, provides a world class service that reflects traditional British qualities. Quality of service should be measurable with pre-defined parameters that companies must meet before they are allowed to use OUR good name. --- I hope you agree with these sentiments. If you do, please help and sign my petition. Also, please don't forget to confirm your entry by clicking the link in the email they send you. Best Regards, Rob
  7. hi im mike .. me and my partner are both disabled my partner is deaf and I use a wheelchair we have had several years of troubles with british gas from eronious transfers , them trying to force us to pay gas and elec bills for houses we don't even live in , to over charging us for massive amounts of electricity used when we asked them for help to find why our usage was so high , which they agreed to come to our house and find the problem then refused to do this after agreeing, we raised a complaint through the ombudsman about their behaviour who found british gas were doing things wrongly and told the company to apologise and gime £20 for my troubles . this latest episode is driving us both insane with stress and grief , while we were going through a very major personal problem . where my partner was abused as a child we were driving back and forward to the high court as my partner pressed charges for abuse , early in the year I informed british gas not to take more than £60 per month from my bank , and also made calls to them which they agreed during the trial for my partner , british gas went into our bank took over £90 knowingly without our permission on 3 occasions . now we don't have loads of money and the extra they took from our bank put a high court trial at risk , because we needed the money they took from our bank for fuel to go to the court trial . .. the man charged was sentenced to 9 years in jail . but british gas did not return the money to our bank except 1 payment when there were 3 occasions they took it from us .. we had the ombudsman deal with a previous complaint with the same company and they tried to hide the actions by saying it was part of a previous complaint , and they would not deal with it , now we cannot trust them to go near our bank have been forced to stop their acess to our bank . now they are trying to threaten us bully us and ignore the fact they took the extra money from our bank .. were looking for help or advice on how to deal with this company please ... many thanks in advance / mike and Sandra
  8. Hi All, Having a bit of an issue with getting a refund from Scottish Power for a pre paid gas meter we had at our council flat. when we moved out the meter was showing in credit, we always put more on each month over the summer so we have a bit of a buffer for the winter. We couldn't run it down due to the circumstances of the move, the area was descending into chaos rapidly and we wanted out, we gave the final meter reading on the 3rd the guy I spoke too was new and cut off the call I called back on the 6th of October to try again. A week or so later we were sent final statements for the gas and electric, the electric was fine the gas was a lot lower than what it should be. Phoned and asked why, after 60 minutes of being passed around, spoke to someone that explained that they changed their systems in March and some details had not come across correctly. She would put this right and get another statement produced, which has now come and was much closer to the amount we are owed. they won't refund it as for some reason the old amount is still showing on our account. into the forth week and still getting mucked around, also how difficult are the statements!! been raised as a complaint which will take another 5 - 10 days!! Anyone had similar issues?
  9. so i have had the gas disconnected permanently because the standing charge has got too expensive, i still have a water supply and electricity, how can i make 100 litres of 40 degree hot water in 20 minutes? i cant change the instant gas water heater thats screwed on the wall to an electric one bcause i dont own the property
  10. As a British Gas consumer I was sent an e-mail in August 2014 regarding British Gas working with the government to install insulation into millions more homes for free. They were also offering a £50 High Street gift card as an extra incentive! Mid September I recieved a nearly identical e-mail but this time the High Street gift card incentive was £25. Regardless of the incentive, I decided to contact them and enquire. I was informed that the system was down and someone from British Gas would call me back........ .....they never have! I have also filled in online applications with N Power and E.on regarding cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and possible replacement boiler ( after declaring a family income below the threshold they mention and acknowledging I am in receipt of Working Tax Credits ) but I have not heard anything from those two companies either. Has anyone on these forums actually had any success or follow up contact when they have made an enquiry?
  11. hi everyone! i havent bought credit for my gas meter for about 2 years and have had no hot water or heating and the housing company (sanctuary) capped said meter because of this. strangely i now, according to the credit balance thingy on the meter it says i owe them 212 quid. just wondering what this 212 quid is for since i havent used the thing. could anyone explain why and where these charges have came from? the reason i havent topped the gas meter up is cos i couldnt afford it in the first place. i kept topping it but they kept deducting money and one day i walked for miles for a fiver top up and the damn thing took the whole fiver and i was left totally scunnered. no gas at all. i have heard from some other folks that there is a charge for simply "having the meter" - seems out of order to me! £212 . for nothing! any of you guys explain this to me? thanks folks! thanks again folks !
  12. Helping out a friend here. British Gas have started billing my friend a "Standing Order" charge. Friend has NO gas. He owns the flat. It is pretty old fashioned - there are no gas pipes into his flat; no central heating, no boiler, no gas hob. Absolutely NO gas. He has the ground floor flat in a block of 5 flats. In the basement vaults of the block - outside in a communal area - there are meters for the block - and I assume that all the other flats have a gas supply. I rang BG on friend's behalf - with all the bills to hand - and queried why - after more than 20 years - BG has suddenly started sending "Standing Order" bills to my friend, despite him not having the utility. BG advised that legislation changed in November 2013 and that for every meter they are now sending out "Standing Order" bills !! BG would not listen that friend does not have gas - that surely BG can not start billing people for a utility that friend does not have.....??? This practise seems illegal. And I wonder how many other people BG are "ripping off" in this way. S-C-A-M Does anyone have an appropriate answer to BG ????
  13. Hi Does anyone know the direct contact details for the current CEO of British Gas? I did search this on the forum, but could only find details and info from 2009...... Any help, very welcome. Lindsay
  14. I discovered two years ago that for 6 years I had been paying day time rates for my E7. They admitted and promised to refund within 7 days. A tear later they were denying it and saying there had been no error. By this time the records had been destroyed forever after a system upgrade. I had calculated around 2000 in overcharges in the 6 years and stopped paying them until they sorted it out and refund me whatever I had not gotten back that way. After a few months I sent details to the ombudsman who acknowledged my complaint, but then lost it and never acted. I then became suspicious when I was turned down for a job and found that BG had defaulted my credit record every month and had me down as heavily in arrears. They used that false information to illegally get a warrant rubber stamped by magistrates and turned up one Saturday morning and began drilling my door lock to break in and fit a coin meter. (This pushes the cost up considerably apart form the inconvenience) I had to pay them most of what they demanded there and then to get these heavies to clear off. The following Monday I received their letter threatening to break in if I didn't pay. I then got the ombudsmen involved again and they apologised did noting and eventually sais they found in favour of BG, but gave no grounds for that decision. I am determined not to be bullied but they continue threatening and sending make believe debts to debt collector firms.. I am paying 2000 a year to heat a two bedroom flat and I cant switch because they claim I owe them money. I find it hard to believe they could be given such power to ignore normal law. I simply said, send me a statement proving what fuel I used and how much you charged me for it and if that is correct I will not argue. They are unable and unwilling to do this and seem to be able to use to the system to simply make up a sum and demand it with the backing of the state. Does anyone know the true position? I cant afford to employ lawyers, but at this point the principal is as important to me as the money. Any suggestions? I eventually got them to clear my creit file
  15. hi Really looking for some advice. I have an ongoing issue with british gas, this has been going on for over four months now and i dont know where to go from here. * I changed my account with them and needed to re-set the Direct Debit. Existing Direct Debit stopped.... * They then continued to try and take the money from the old account direct debit, despite new details and a new Direct Debit being set up. * Numerous phone calls resulted in two further new Direct Debits being set up and STILL they continued to try to take the money from the original Direct Debit instruction.... * All this time, I am losing track of what is owed to them, despite many attempts to pay my bills via direct debit. * We are losing our discounts because they 'Can't' take the money and i am spending countless hours on the phone, time when i am supposed to be at work trying to address this issue. * I even took a full day off work and had to cancel a family day out in order to wait in for a call from them and they never called * I have emailed them the details of the Direct Debit instruction many times and they've never replied * Now we have been contacted by a debt collector 'Buchanan, Clark & Wells' who are chasing the money we have been trying to pay them... . After speaking with B,C & W they informed us that they contacted British gas who told them that they weren't supposed to contact us as they were aware of our complaints, but that the staff member responsible for addressing this is away on 'annual leave' with no return date..... We are at the end of our tether and do not know what to do from this point on..... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Lindsay
  16. Does anyone know how who can FORCE British Gas to provide bills that comply with the Code of Accurate Billing??? Does anyone know how to force British Gas to provide copies of domestic energy contracts that they have imposed on you without your consent??? Does anyone know how you can force British Gas to allow you to switch when they have manufactured and fabricated an alleged debt against you??? British Gas threatening to disconnect Any responses appreciated
  17. Dear all, I am looking for some advice in regards to British Gas. When I moved into my current property, the previous account holders put my husbands name on the account, rather than starting a new account. This meant that we ended up being on a business tariff rather than domestic, and there was an outstanding amount to be paid from the previous bill. To say I am cross is an understatement! we went through the whole rigmarole of changing the account to British Gas Domestic (as we were told they couldn't re-assess our bill to domestic rates unless we joined them on the domestic side first?!? We wanted to change to a different company, but felt they gave us no choice!) Only after numerous phone calls to both business and domestic companies (I lost the will to live that day, 7 1/2 hours in total!) and was finally told we had to fill in a VAT declaration to state that the property is used for domestic purposes only. They told me to scan and email this form back to them (even though I told them I wasn't due to be connected to the internet for another week!) It took over three weeks for them to acknowledge receiving the email and we were told that we would have the matter resolved by the 4th August. We have had numerous amounts of letters threatening legal action for non-payment of this bill. Last time I called I was told they are computer generated and to ignore it as it was being dealt with. I came home Sunday, after a few days away, to find a letter from them threatening to disconnect our supply! (We have three children aged 4, 9 and 14!) We still haven't had the correct bill and I refuse to pay the bill until it is correct. Can anyone tell me where I should go next, as I really feel a complaint is in order and I need the bill corrected so I can pay what I do owe! On the other hand, I don't want them to cut our supply off!! At my wits end!! Thank you in advance Martini
  18. Sorry about the length of this: Having recently requested a copy of my credit report from Experian, I noticed there are 2 defaulted accounts for British Gas – one for electric, one for gas. • This was my parents’ property – they had moved out and gone their separate ways and I stayed there until the property was sold in October 2008. • British Gas started the account in my name from 03/07/2008. • I didn't call British Gas to say that I was the new account holder – I don’t know who did but they got my details and the meter readings from someone. • I didn't make any payments on the account whilst living at the property but they say I registered for online billing in August 2008 – I don’t remember doing this. • I moved from the property at the end of September 2008 and they say that meter readings were given to them once again – certainly not by me! • I had no forwarding address when I left the property as I didn't have anywhere to live. • I (very stupidly ) made two payments of £20.00 on 06/03/2009 (don’t know why). • British Gas defaulted the accounts on 06/06/2009 – Electric £50.00, Gas £53.00. Firstly, I sent a letter stating the breach of ICO guidelines on placing defaults after such a long period of time and asking for the defaults to be removed as I hadn't made any payment on the accounts, but they came back saying that I paid £20.00 on each account in March 2009. I hadn't remembered this but on checking my bank statements, I can see now that I did. I then sent a letter explaining my financial difficulties in 2008 and asking, as a gesture of goodwill and because the amounts are so small, would they remove the defaults, but again they said no. I even offered to pay the outstanding balances. I sent a SAR to them, which I've just received back. There are statements dated 07/08/2008 and 15/10/2008 for the electric and gas accounts but no other correspondence from them after the October statements. There are no letters chasing the outstanding balance or saying that they will default the accounts if I don’t make a payment, and I certainly didn't receive anything via email. I didn't actually speak with them to set up the accounts, and from what I can remember they didn't send me any information stating that they report on credit files. If I’d have known this, I would've made different decisions at the time. Would going down the DPA route achieve anything – stating that I didn't know they were acting as data controller and that I hadn't given my consent for them to report on my credit file? Also, considering I hadn't made a payment from the start, July 2008 to March 2009, why did they not default the account sooner? Is there anything else I can do to try and get these defaults removed or will I just have to put up with them until next June? Thanks in advance
  19. Hi on the 3/4/13 i went onto a payment meter i owed £115.22 which i was told would be added to the new meter as a debt and collected at £6 PW but actuly only £75.22 was added (only found all this out today after another phone call) i begain paying my gas on the card as normal topping up over the weeks months now 15months after this im messing around with the meter press the button and it tells me i still owe £57.35 i phone and say whats going on to be told we very sorry we have been chargeing £6 weekly for a debt and you have actuly over paid by £244.76 we are sorry we will send you a cheque out and send an engineer to fix the meter. at this point i had £39 credit on the meter the engineer turns up as planned i explain what happened and he says no problem il fix it resets the meter and my credits wiped out they cant put it back surprise now im 40quid down im on the phone the engineer then tells me your going to have a nightmare. they send me to a vender to collect a new card and reinburse me my 40credit when i get to the shop they sent me to it dont even sell gas back on the phone they give me a rti code to give a different shop i drive there surprise the code isnt valid another code another agent who tell me i dont know why they give you that code il send you a new card out and a message to the shop. card turns up 2days later puts it in the meter and its refused phones back up told to get a card from another shop this card regestired ok phone back asks for my 40 credit im told i have to top up 5x b4 it goes on even though they owe me i have to top up back to the shop tops up 5x still no credit phones back told to top up every day which ive done for 5 days now today after still not getting my money back i phone back and explain it all again and ask to just speak to a supervisor as ive had enough of driving from shop to shop and not getting nowhere after 35mins of ask to be put thru to the supervisor the agents arguing they finally tell me someone will phone me back. 2hrs later and they phone back i tell the supervisor whats happened and hes very helpfull and tells me i should get it on my next top up ok im happy with that i ask him to confirm my cheques been sent out what cheque!!! he looks ok heres the tricky bit im now told from last year they added only £75.22 we dont know why we done this i continued to make payments and then after 5months even though the debt was £49 short they credited me £238.06 they also dont know why they did this i still continue topping up now i have no credit and i owe them £114 only £2 under the original debt after 15months its their errors that they made not mine surly as its there error it should go in my favour should it not???? i think they should write the debt off for all the running around and their errors any input where i stand please
  20. I checked my credit file with Noddle today and there's a default on there that doesn't show up with any of the other credit reference agencies. It's on a old address, and from British Gas and the default is dated in November 2009. It's weird that it's from British Gas as I usually go with the cheapest provider, and it's never them! I certainly haven't received a default notice from or demand for payment. It's only for a small amount (£150), and had I have known I wouldn't have let it default. How can I get this taken off my credit file? I really want it removed as quickly as possible. If paying it off would remove the default then I probably would, just for a simple life, but as I understand it this won't help much as it'll still stay on the file. Is it okay to email them, or do I need to send everything by recorded post?
  21. I just received a letter from British Gas - "We would like to exchange your electricity meter. Every so often we are required to exchange your meter to ensure its continued accuracy and safety. Your electricity meter is now due to be exchanged and we need to arrange a date and time to come to your home and install the new meter...." Now - I have a gas meter with British Gas for my GAS supply And I have an electricity meter with EDF as my ELECTRICITY supplier. So why are British Gas writing to me telling me they are required to exchange my electricity meter?? just to try and get my electricity business too??? Curious. Before I throw the letter in the bin !!!
  22. took out the home care plan with british gas ,when I called them out to fix my boiler ,the fitter said it needed 2 new parts a pump ,(which he fitted the same day) and a new flue which he said would be fitted the next day ,the next day a different fitter came ,he told me that the flue that was ordered wouldn't fit and they don't make flues for my Worchester bosh 240 anymore,he condemned my boiler and said I needed a new boiler, he got one of their salesmen round the same day to sell me one, which wasn't cheap but I was desperate (no heating or hot water) , I have since found out that you can still get a replacement flue for the Worcester 240 boiler , I think I was mis sold this boiler has this happened to anybody else
  23. Hi everyone, I am a landlord of the property which my managing agency had rented out to a group of friends. They had been in the property for a year and as I'm a doctor and do not live locally, I never got the chance to pay regular visits to check if everything is in order. A year later now I have found out that my property is empty as British Gas Revenue Protection Department has cut off the gas supply as the meter was found tempered with on two occasions. The managing agency got rid of the tenants and have returned me the keys of my property as British Gas has refused to put the supply back on or put a new meter in until the balance is paid. The balance £2000+ . RP Department made it clear that they don't care who was liable as they need their money regardless of who's pocket it comes from. I want a bit of advice as to what are my options now as I will not be paying them for something I am not responsible for. Their job was to inform me on first occasion where they found out that the meter was tempered with so I could have served the tenants a notice. I have read a few cases here and they say companies hold Landlord responsible for all the costs. Is there any way round it? Thanks in advance
  24. I have a wee issue. We moved into our house in December 2012 for which we received the Gas Safety Certificate. As of this date, we have never received a new certificate from December 2013, and the landlord has never mentioned it. I'm fully aware they're breaking the law ... so what should I do? I have another ongoing issue which is they haven't protected my deposit so will be going to court, so I'm not really in the mood to discuss this latest issue with them, I'd rather just report them and let them answer to the appropriate authority. Who do I need to report my landlord to? What can I do about getting a new certificate? Many thanks.
  25. I'm after some advice please. We have recently been contacted by Advantis Credit on behalf of British Gas for 73.33. I have asked them to provide the billing period for the bill which they have. The billing period is 16/04/2007 - 19/05/2009. I was originally given a date where the last digit in the end date, that of 19/05/2009, read as 19/05/200r. I asked them for a better copy of the date but informed them that the start date, that of 16/04/2007, falls a few months after we sold the property. We sold the property in December 2006. However, it appears that my wife has made payment to this debt some years back, as we assumed it was our debt, but given the dates it appears that the money they were given was for a debt that is not ours. Could anyone please let me know what to do next? Advantis appear to have no interest in listening to us and if the debt is not ours then what are our chances of getting the money paid back? Thanks Lee
