  3. Likewise Conniff. I have never come across a car I could not repair and up for the challenge. The difference being you and I would be able to tell why it had gone wrong. And that's the difference these days. Fixing cars now is more understanding why rather than what, that's how it's done. And if you understand why it's just a formality.

  5. I think the comments made by conniff are perhaps being taken out of context here and perhaps some posters are missing the point. I have often commented on the abilities of CAB, even some of the site team. The overriding issue is that there is no clear guidance as to what is acceptable wear and tear on a used car and what is not. As regards service times, well that again is dependent on the experience of the mechanic, the design of each individual car involved and the availability of the tools required to do the operation concerned. So in some circumstances it is indeed possible to change a clutch in half an hour, I have done so myself on certain marques I am familiar with however some do indeedtake quite considerably longer. However the question posed is the ability of CAB to determine what is a major or minor fault and in my book a clutch failure so soon after purchase is a major fault as the result is a an un driveable car. There are always tell tale signs of clutch failure or DMF failure which are easily picked up on inspection but the reality is that CAB are not qualified to determine what is wear and tear or what is a failure.
  6. True Scania but the problem is that the engineering is usually ahead of the legislation. Then when they develop the system it usually exceeds the legislation but the legislation still remains meaning loads of unnecessary stuff in the legislation is still in place. Pathetic really. And what about the latest efforts of the EU. TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring systems) must be fitted to all cars of 15 MY and for what? What useful purpose does it serve? All it can do is alert the user that tyre pressures are low. It doesn't prevent a blow out or a puncture or add to emissions reduction.
  7. The spped you claim you were doing is more than enough to cause a whiplash injury and damage the car. As has been pointed out, the bumper cover is flexible and will rebound into shape at that speed but the energy of the collision is absorbed through the metal insert and is transmitted into the body shell which in turn is designed to deform to dissipate the energy. So whilst from the outward view of no damage, when inspected internally there could be substantial damage. Not hard to work out either and if her brakes were on this just adds to the problem. Leave it to the insurers to sort out would be my advice and by the way, there is no excuse for running into the back of someone. Either too close or too fast.
  8. Indeed Conniff. Is an endemic problem however cross threads rarely result in the plug falling out and unusual for them to leak that bad as well. I think this might be a case of a stripped thread. Info though is scant to make an objective call (not unusual that is it)! As with all fastenings, clamp force on contact surfaces is key to a good joint.
  9. That's actually a dammed good offer so take it and run. US recall won't matter and is frankly nebulous. Remember, manufacturers determine if there is an issue by repairs /1000 cars and you can only really say there is an issue if you can prove more than 0.3/1000.
  10. I think that's a fair metaphor lol Yes I know talking to many of the staff they feel the same way. As a keen industry observer though I think the biggest joke in the UK car manufacturing industry at the moment is Bentley in Crewe.
  11. I think a few corrections are needed here so there is a balanced view. Not all jobs are manpower and those that are transfer to full JLR status after one year now thanks to the Unions negotiation with this years now agreed pay deal which is now a very reasonable deal from that originally offered by the company. The main drivers behind this were the pension situation and Tempoary workers parity with permanent contract staff. True, all plants are suffering parking issues but new facilities are being built. A lot of this is driven by plant expansions and new model launches. Al UK facilities with the exception of the R&D centres are full manufacturing facilities as well as the China plant with stamping and body build lines. The only assembly lines are in India and the newly announced lines in Brazil. It is untrue staff get sacked for walking outside of pathways. Usually there is more behind it. From the stats I've seen it's usually for persistent lateness, intoxication through alcohol, drugs or theft. They also have a policy of zero harm/lost time accidents which is why they are so hot on safety in the plants. If you think the west midlands plants are tight, you need to visit the Halewood one and even worse, the overseas plants. Yes indeed they want their pound of flesh but the pay and conditions plus the benefits are industry leading and if you want the sort of money they pay that is to be expected. I think most permanent staff are concerned by the rate of expansion, but it seems well controlled. But what's even more interesting about all of this is that the parent company Tata, who incidentally also own a host of other British institutions such as Tetley Tea take a back seat and let the management get on with it.   13. I take it you have supporting facts for that EB. The only daft vehicle related ones I can think of are the requirement for diesel particulate filters when most modern diesels don't need them now and the early versions were not developed enough in the time available to comply. And TPMS. Tyre pressure monitoring. What does that do? Again something for emissions believe it or not. One area they need to look at which is often overlooked or no Government seems to want to do anything about it anywhere is the amount of spray given off by lorries in the wet on high speed roads along with tighter controls over white van man. Now that would be a real improvement to road safety.
  14. Hasn't been under UK Stewardship for years Conniff. It was with BMW who split the company up quite successfully as it happens despite the future failure of Rover and then Jaguar and Land Rover ( as it was then) was bought by Ford and run as two separate companies with Land Rover propping up Jaguar all the time. However, in my opinion development was restricted being forced to use common global platforms and share designs and parts. When Ford sold everything off, more a fire sale because of disastrous results of "Ford" world wide, Tata were the successful bidders who made it quite clear to the then predominantly British board of Directors, they were on their own and would sink or swim on their own and this all being at the time of the most vicious recessions most probably caused (as is well documented) by a hangover from Thatcher's de regulation of the banking system. In fact, and not well reported at the time, Jaguar and Land Rover laid off literally thousands of engineering staff, made hundreds redundant which had a knock on effect with the supplier base as well. Not well known either is that during August 2009, the Directors were within 15 mins of calling in the receivers when Tata stepped in but with very severe terms. It's interesting to note, that when the two companies approached the Government for help/loan (and not a bailout like the banks) the terms were so absurd, they were on a par with todays PAY Day loans companies. In effect they had no intention of helping whereas if you were a bank....no problem. However there was a star in the making with the Evoque and just look what has happened with that. So what we do know is that a predominantly British run company took the tough decisions, worked with the Unions and staff to deliver a lean company with vision, a portfolio of new class leading products and more in the pipe line, new factories and assembly facilities WORLD WIDE for the first time and massive profits. What was it for last fiscal year.....£2.6billion. Now you tell me that success is not due to the British stewardship and the staff during the tough times of 2009. Nothing to do with Europe either. We should be celebrating as those 1300 jobs have a multiplying factor in the supply base as well and I hear all factories have full order books for at least a third of the year ahead.
  15. You need to consider the effect your lateness has on the employer. In my line of work, if there are insufficient numbers of people to keep the line running it cost's £40, 000 a minute in down time and lost productivity. We take lateness very seriously and twice in a month triggers an investigation. Whilst this doesn't affect me as being senior staff I travel 40 miles and am always in early to lead by example but the main reason is that you cannot know what is likely to happen so I get a lot of lee way to play with. Even when my daily commute was 200 miles round trip in appalling weather I would leave earlier and it was often remarked upon if I was in on time then everyone else should be who lived relatively local and couldn't do it. So in essence it's down to your attitude towards the position you hold and what you do to cover all eventualities. One thing though to note, did you at any time call to say you were running late?
  16. I think it would be prudent to declare what car it is and perhaps a photo of the damage as the difference between un roadworthy and road worthy is very subjective. Personally I can see a big struggle with this looming and you need to read the terms and conditions of the policy. Unless explicitly authorised by your or the third parties insurance company in writing you are liable for every action you take. From the way you describe the damage so far I think you might be on a sticky wicket as it is perfectly acceptable to make temporary repairs prior to a full permanent repair.
  17. A lot of this depends on how the manufacturers decide to run the system and the drivers attitude towards road safety. Not all cars with DRL's have the dash illuminated however all of them have to have a lights on warning on the dash. So at the end of the day it's really the responsibility of the driver. This system was also tried back in the mid to late 80's but was so unreliable due to technology at the time that the regs were withdrawn however with the advent of LED's it's been mandatory on all cars sold in Europe since 2012. Does the Kia come with auto head lights on setting? They are though a massive boon to road safety now. If you want to complain about the issue you need to write to the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) and VOSA. These are the people who make the rules in conjunction with other European bodies.
  18. You'd need to get the codes read as it's petrol. Assumed it was diesel as someone mentioned dosing. If you can get that done it's relatively easy to determine what the issue is, the clever bit is knowing why and that's where most garages get it wrong. They assume that because it shows a fault saying EGR fault for example, that particular part must be faulty but often it's not the actual fault. The fault could flag as the result of something else.
  19. The sign you are seeing is a powertrain issue one. The fuel additive is available from Ford and is for the first generation diesel particulate filters to enable them to re generate/clean themselves. The additive is injected in the front of the DPF and raises the temperature of the filter thus enabling the core to burn off the soot. Never really worked particularly well though and was replaced by generation two and subsequent iterations.
  20. Regulations are based on number of people employed, not who might be present at any one time. So what happens at shift changes presuming there are shifts. Routine action to take would be first to lodge a grievance.
  21. I would suggest the OP calms down a bit. If indeed it is one of the plants referred to in the previous posts I know for a fact that they have rigorous procedures in place for dealing with disputes and in the first instance you need to raise a grievance IF.....you find action is taken against you. Again, if, it is the company suggested you need to consider your position very carefully especially if you are not on a permanent contract. The Unions work very closely with HR and security and have all signed up to a "dignity at work" policy which is enforced with vigour. Something makes me think this pettiness will end in tears on your part!

  25. Exactly j66, the op contradicts much. I too know about the BL seat belts. The corrosion issues are very debatable and subjective but are there (30 cm rule) because it's deemed that a run of the mill tester could not make an objective decision as to how the area will react under adverse use conditions. Take it from me that the front spring hangers will be fine as they are reinforced in that area and the impact loads they absorb will be distributed not through the area which is corroded but elsewhere. His video like that of the specialist is just a joke. The OP really has got it in for JB's here and really ought to be careful with what he posts and where. Just hope JB's will respond but then they did most of this earlier. Absolutely pathetic!!
