  1. Most of us will now have finished with signing on until the New Year (thank goodness too!). Just wanted to remind everyone to keep doing jobsearch over Christmas and New Year and don't give the JC any excuse to say you didn't look for work during this period - I'm sure they're hoping to catch loads out when we start signing again next year. It's a pain to do but as we're paid for these weeks then technically we're obliged to meet the criteria and look for work too, so make sure you cover yourself over the holiday period with enough evidence. I'm using CV-Library and Reed, clicking on a couple of jobs per day - including Christmas Day and New Year's Day - so the JC can't claim I 'took a break from job hunting' over Christmas. Cover yourselves at all times
  2. http://www.clintoncards.co.uk/christmas/christmas-cards/council-estate-santa-clause-christmas-card does anyone else find this card offensive because I do! I would love to write to the CEO of Clintons but their website only gives email addis for queries about orders or stores!
  3. Does anyone know anything about the £10 Christmas Bonus, as one or two people I have spoken to have not received it. I read somwhere that it had been scrapped as long ago as 2011.
  4. Buy now, pay-through-the-nose later. Full rip-off story:- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2858753/Littlewoods-accused-ripping-hard-customers-free-Christmas-gift-payment-plans-charge-TWICE-stores.html

  6. Was chatting to someone online who mentioned they had not received a letter saying they would be getting the christmas bonus, I had not got that letter either, just hoping it had gone in anyway, got round to phoning the Benefits office today and yes I had not been given the bonus and they dont kbnow why, so if you think you are entitled to the £10 bonus and not received a letter saying you are getting it you should phone them up and check, i know at least 2 and maybe more who have not got it when they should have
  7. The company I work for has a track record of not really giving a damn about it's employees, until they need something from them. For the past decade or so, every Christmas, the company gives all of the female employees an expensive bottle of wine and gift vouchers for a few hundred pounds. But the male staff get nothing (doing the exact same job by the way). Even a new member of staff (who only started 3 weeks prior to Christmas) got the wine and gift vouchers, and of course she's female. It certainly seems discriminatory to me on the grounds of sex, but is it illegal? I don't mind everyone getting the bonus, but just feel like its a kick in the teeth that only the female employees get it...if we all got a bonus that would be fine. I look forward to your replies.
  8. Hello, Just wondering if anyone can help or offer insight on what i should do next regarding my situation:- I finished working a 6 week tempory contract on 20/12/13. I applied online for JSA on 21/12/13. I assumed as it was so close to the Christmas holidays that i wouldn't receive notification to attend an interview until January, i also thought the 24th(christmas eve) was a bank holiday or atleast that the jsa would've been closed by then - i guess that was rather daft. I received a text from JSA on 23/12/13 at 19:35 informing me that my appointment would be on the 24th at 12:40. Now i did'nt read this text until the 25th(christmas day) once i charged my phone from the dead to send well wishes to the family. What concerns me is that i wasn't given 24 hours notice to attend, i also received no letters informing me of my appointment & i know once i call on the 1st of January(when they open) that i'll be given grief, likely get asked to re-apply. Should i re-apply online now or should i wait until 1/1/14 to try and fix it? Thanks, Lee
  9. Has anybody got the dates for ESA payments over the holiday period. Do they go in as normal, or early. My next due payment is the 30th thanks
  10. Sorry I know this is only a minor thing, but have those entitled to this £10 received it? I get high rate DLA and in ESA Support Group but had no letter or payment.
  11. hi I went to sign on today at the JC and was told I may or may not receive my money before Christmas. Usually I'd receive my cash on the Friday from signing on the Tuesday (today) I got given a letter explaining that between 18th and 31st December payments that fall between then may or may not be put through. I have nothing in my bank at the moment and am relying on my JSA for Christmas, I have presents to still get. This uncertainty has worried me and I don't know what to do! if I dont get my payment I have to wait till 3rd Jan!!! in between then I have to see my advisor on NYE! but this apparently isnt a sign on (usually when I see my advisor he signs me on as well all in one go) so what are my options? surely they wont leave people high and dry this Christmas?. Ive heard loans from the JC are zilch as they have done away with them. Im pretty naffed off! Can anyone offer me some advice or is there anyone else who is in the same boat and maybe know more than me?
  12. Ikea is sprucing up its offer by selling cheap six foot Christmas trees in a bid for more festive business as analysts claim as much as 62pc of the high street is already on sale Famed for its flat-pack beds and the meatballs in its restaurants, Ikea is branching out in the festive rush by selling real Christmas trees - for five pounds. The Swedish out of town giant yesterday revealed its tactics for trying to entice shoppers away from the high street - offering customers a £20 coupon if they forked out £25 for a real, 6 foot Nordmann fir. Ikea said rivals were selling trees for as much as £79.99 elsewhere in Britain, with the average price £48. Brigit Hartelius, deputy country manager for the UK, told the Daily Telegraph it was all part of giving customers an "affordable Christmas". But more cynical analysts said it was simply part of the cut and thrust at Christmas as competition for shoppers hots up. Last week, accountants PriceWaterhouseCoopers said 62 per cent of the high street was already on sale or running promotions amid fears hard-pressed families coping with rising energy bills will cut back this Christmas. 14. Hello, OK it's probably a teeny tiny bit early to ask this question but I was wondering if anyone knew the dates the Job Centre will be open during the Christmas/New Year period this year? They usually release the dates on a website somewhere but I cant find it. I want to go spend Christmas with my sister in Peterborough this year (I live in Leeds) and one of my signing days falls on Friday 27th December, knowing my luck it will be open on that day and I will have to rush back to Leeds to make my appointment at 9AM lol. Someone told me you can book a "holiday" from signing on, does anyone know if thats true and if so do you still get paid in that period?.
  15. Hiya Everyone. I rent with a housing association and they offer 2 weeks rent free at Christmas. I emailed them last week to ask which weeks they would be, and they got back to me today to tell me that I am not eligible as I am currently in arrears. In my original email I did acknowledge my arrears and outline that I would still pay the arrears for the two weeks. I am a bit gutted about it and also a bit confused, does this mean that when I pay in full for those two weeks is all of that amount coming off of my arrears? If not, doesn't that mean I am techinally paying more rent in a years period than people who are not in arrears? Does anyone know how this works? Thanks everyone x
  16. Vouchers, or gift cards, can be a great idea at Christmas. Give them to a teacher, a colleague, or a teenager perhaps, and you can show you have at least thought about them, without second-guessing their tastes. But last year thousands of consumers were left out of pocket, when HMV, Blockbuster, Comet and Jessops all went out of business after the Christmas period. Most vouchers were eventually honoured but only after a period of uncertainty. In the case of Jessops, now under new management, some people were offered replacement gifts, but customers with vouchers worth, in total, more than half a million pounds never saw their money back. The fact is, if you buy a gift card, there is no guarantee it will be honoured if the shop goes out of business. Advice So what should consumers do if they are considering buying gift cards or vouchers this Christmas? First of all, they should watch their local high street carefully. Blockbuster, the video chain, has already announced its intention to call in the administrators, for the second time. "I'm really concerned that there's going to be something again this Christmas," says Deborah Harvey from Newport. "And it's going to be too late for anyone to do anything about it," she warns. The UK Gift Card and Voucher Association advises customers to think very carefully about where they buy vouchers from. It says as long as you trust the retailer, you should trust their vouchers. But the reverse must be equally true. If you wish to buy more than £100 of vouchers, make sure you buy them on a credit card. But otherwise there are still no guarantees that your money will be safe. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24868288
  17. I've just applied for DLA for my three year old son due to his developmental problems. I'm not sure he'll qualify but my Health Visitor and his Social Worker seem confident he will be awarded something. I'm a single mum on full benefits. I get Income Support as a Lone Parent, Child Tax Credits, Child Benefit and CSA off his dad. Do I need to inform any of these that I have applied for the DLA or do I just wait to see if he is awarded anything? (His dad is aware of the application so no doubt has already informed the CSA in the hope it will reduce his payments)
  18. Does anyone know when they finish their holidays and re-open?
  19. Don't forget to get home and spend some time with the family. ChristmasCard Merry Christmas all and a Prosperous New Year.
  20. What a wonderfully thoughtful present http://uknationalforums.com/showthread.php?1551-Merry-Christmas-from-Lucky-Strike-Cigarettes!-It-s-Toasted!&p=3696#post3696

  22. Vanquis of course is part of Provident Financial services, the doorstep loan firm recently featured in TV docs for its aggressive dealings with vulnerable people. There is no shortage of Vanquis stories on The CAG or indeed on the internet itself about Vanquis, and also Argos suspicions about passing details about customers previously to Vanquis. Do NOT be tempted by offers of vouchers !
  23. Is it normal for DCAs to increase their activity at this time of year. I seem to be having them all come out of the woodwork over the lastfew days
