  1. hi everyone, i have got myself it to some debt with british gas/severn trent, totalling 800pounds. i rang them up to arrange a payment plan and they agreed to a direct debit of 100pounds a month and i gave them my bank details and thought that was the end of it. about 12 days later i got a letter of income support saying that they were taking 50pound a week to give to BG and severn trent. this leaves me with 20 a week. i phoned IS and explained that i had already arranged a payment plan but they contacted BG and BG told them i had agreed to have this money taken out of my benefits. income support said that BG decides how much they take and they can't do anything about it. so i asked if BG can just send them a letter and take as much money as they like out of anyones benefits? apparently they can. this is leaving me in a very bad situation, im going to struggle to pay for the basics like nappies and baby formula. does anyone know of way to get this amount lowered? thanks.
  2. Sorry found answer to my query but cant find delete button.
  3. Hi there Someone on the debt board suggested I post in here regarding a debt I apparently have to British Gas. The debt relates to my previous address. I moved into the property Dec 2009. Tried on numerous occasions to find out who the gas supplier by phoning the national grid helpline etc. At first I was told that the property wasn't listed. Eventually after going around in circles and phoning several different numbers I was told it was British Gas who were the supplier. I called British Gas on numerous occasions to ask that they set up the gas account in my name as I was the new tenant. British Gas stated they were not the supplier. Cue going around in circles - being told by the national grid helpline that it was British Gas, to be told by British Gas it was not them. I never ever received a gas bill from any supplier for the 2 year period I was in the property. I moved out of the property in Jan 2012. A few months down the line I started receiving letters from a solicitor (?) claiming to be acting on behalf of British Gas to recover a debt of approx £800 for gas at my last property. This is despite never receiving a gas bill from them in the entire time I lived in the property. Any advice?
  4. British Gas broke into my house while I was at work, giving my disabled wife a scare in the process. Because I hadn't paid my last bill they fitted a prepayment meter, and told the wife a top-up card with which we can add credit to the meter would come within 3 days. The card never came, so after a week I phoned to tell them. They apologised, sent a man within four hours to add £5 of emergency credit to the meter, and said they were sending out another card. It obviously didn't occur to them that they could have got said man to bring a card with him. The second card never came, and the £5 credit went in two days, so the meter cut the gas off. In the meantime I'd looked up info on the Net and read that I could go to any PayPoint store, get a meter card from them, bring it home, stick it in the meter to initialise it (presumably with a meter identity code, though nobody actually tells you that), take it back to the PayPoint store and have them put some credit on it. When I returned the card to the store they found they couldn't credit it and would get the message "Invalid Card". So they gave me another new card in case the first was faulty, which I took back and initialised, returning to the store for credit. Their PayPoint machine again said "Invalid Card". I phoned BG, told them all about it, and they sent out another bloke to put a walloping great £5 of credit on it. They listened to what I was saying, made me cycle through menus on the meter and read off some spurious code, then proudly announced it wasn't working because this meter doesn't take the usual BG card, but requires a modified version known as an RTI card - available from them (yes, they were sending out yet another new card that would never reach me) or also available from PayPoint "superagents". What a load of old rubbish. I found myself a superagent, got an RTI card off them, quoted an identification number given to me by BG over the last phone chat and based on the code I'd read to them off the meter, and they loaded this code successfully onto my shiny new RTI card. Trouble is that when they then tried to load £20 of credit onto the card, the PayPoint machine choked in horror at the attempt, saying this card was just a load of invalid nonsense. Marvellous. So I phoned BG yet again, gave them the entire spiel, read more numbers off meter menus, waited forever, then was told they had the solution - that this was a special type of meter requiring a different type of card again, this time called a "PCV" card or something similar; unfortunately the man I spoke too was very foreign, and although I made him repeat the "PCV" three times, each time it sounded completely different, so all I know is that it's a combination of three consonants. I think. Anyway, even PayPoint superagents wouldn't have one of these beauties, so the BG man was seeing to it that one would be sent to me first-class so I'd have it in two days. I pointed out to him that it's unlikely I'd receive anything, since the previous two mailings of cards to me never materialised. (The real mystery here is why, when they send someone to my door, it's successful - so they clearly have the right address - but when they send prepayment cars to me in the post, it's as effective as if they didn't send me anything at all). But he was confident I'd get it, and guess what? I didn't. That was five days ago. Still no gas. In fact we've now had no gas at all for 90% of the last four weeks, and tomorrow the weather forecast says will be no warmer than 3 deg. C. My wife is disabled, we have a four-year-old living with us (and two other kids), and our shiny new hi-tech gas meter is little more than a decorative fixture embellishing some dirty old pipes - one that I never asked for and do not want. I should also mention that every time I phone these people I'm on the telephone for about 45 minutes - AT A COST OF 14p PER MINUTE - I am paying through the nose for the crassness and incompetence of a stinking rich utility company that seems not to give one jot about the fact that it has shafted me and my family big-time. If I didn't owe these peasants so much money I would switch pronto to another gas supplier. So that's where we're at: new meter, no gas, no cards I've ever seen will work in it, BG is incapable of working out what's wrong or sending me anything in the post - except bills, which somehow do successfully make it to my house. Funny that. I'm not expecting anyone on this forum to have any useful suggestions for me, but I do want people to understand the depths of uselessness which this fine utility company is plumbing. There is only consolation for me in all this: that all the while the meter is inoperative BG is receiving no money from me and certainly not getting any of the outstanding debt paid. When they choose to take an interest and fix the problem rather than making empty pledges and mouthing confused platitudes, I will consider paying them. Never again, British Gas. Never again. I will be paying the French, the Germans or even the Spanish for my gas in the future. DieselDoctor STOP PRESS: Wow! I've just got off the phone to my wife, who tells me she's been badgering BG all afternoon (at a personal cost of 14p a minute, don't forget), and she's been told that we didn't receive the three meter cards because the despatch system has been rejecting the possibility on our account. But nobody told us that. Funnily enough, she then spoke to another operative, because the first one she was speaking to failed to phone her back, who gives a different version of that story: that since September the twenty-somethingth the card-despatching system has not been working and has been refusing to send anybody cards! Today it's the 25th of October - that's how long we've been cold. So either the previous people I spoke to and who came to my door weren't told this by their employers, or they were deliberately avoiding acknowledging the fact, and lying through their teeth to us every time they said a new card in the post would be the solution. Anyway, they are "sending a new card by manual despatch", and promise it will be with us by Monday (today is Thursday). Don't be so darned stupid, because no, it won't. But despatch systems apart.... the new cards from PayPoint stores haven't been working anyway, and my internet trawl reveals NO mention of any 'new-type' "PCV" or "BBC" or "123" card being in use. So, another damn lie, I suspect.
  5. The Financial Services Authority, is investigating claims by a whistleblower that Britain's £300bn wholesale gas market has been "regularly" manipulated by some of the big power companies, exploiting weaknesses that echo the recent Libor scandal. Separately, the energy regulator Ofgem has been warned by a company responsible for setting so-called benchmark prices, ICIS Heren, that it had seen evidence of suspect trading on 28 September, a key date as it marks the end of the gas financial year and can have an important influence on future prices. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/nov/12/libor-like-manipulation-gas-markets
  6. I am posting for a friend of mine. This is the situation she was running a public house with a partne, the relationship broke down in Apr 2010 and my friend left the premises, the partnership was disolved at this point however my friend ex carried on running the pub untill Oct 2010. When the partnership was dissolved my friend spoke to British Gas and informed them of this and e-mailed a copy of the Accountants letter stating she was no longer responsible for the electricity at the premises. In response to this she receive a bill from B Gas dated Dec 2010, which states balance from previous period zero, balance on account 769 in credit. My friend then thought nothing else of it, until this sat she received a letter from British Gas stating they had continually been writing to her and she owed £4,500. Upon speaking to B Gas she was told this was an error and she actually owes £2,000. They are saying the credit note should have gone to her partner as she left in Apr, but there is no way any money has been paid of the account in that short period as he subsequently went bankrupt. They are also saying this was for another account and the property had two meters which is incorrect asnd surely if this was the case it would be a different account number. She has no proof of what was paid prior to her leaving as the relationship ended badly and she cannot get access to the books. Any advice gratefully received.
  7. Their latest mailshot seeking to tempt users of prepay meters to switch include a "Gift Voucher" worth £55.00 with the offer ending 15th.December 2012. The £55 includes any dual fuel discount. The £55 is broken down as follows; £40 of free Gas/Electricity for those signing up by December 15th,with a further £15 discount every year if switching dual fuels. The small print; The £40 is only credited 6 months after signing up.discount applies only to meters using a key operated meter The £15 discount applies only to meters using a key operated meter. But hold on there is more. They have introduced a means for prepayment meters to top up online. Those switching will be sent a free connector for the purpose. In principle this is a very good idea and will mean customers will no longer have to go to local paypoints to top up the keys. But there is a catch in the small print. Users must satisfy PC operating specs to use the service. Payment via the online connector will be done by debit card £10 may be charged for non use of the device or if not returned within 30 days. Customers will not be entitled to the £40 discount unless the device has been registered and use to top up up meter keys 3 times within a 6 month period.
  8. Hi, Thought this might be a good place to seek advice, I am trying to help a friend. British gas have been granted a Warrant of Entry to fit a pre-payment meter. We want to try and stop fitting of said meter as we believe we have a strong argument. My friend was abroad when they were granted the warrant in the County Magistrates and hence was unable to attend the hearing to argue why the meter should not be fitted (various reasons, but main reason is because meter is outside and she is a disabled person living alone). We rang the Court for some advice in hope there is a form to fill out, but no joy there. Apparently (through information on the internet), you can appeal to the Crown/Magistrates but the only form I can find is: Appeal Notice (Criminal Procedure Rules, rule 63.3) http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/procedure-rules/criminal/docs/crim-pr-form-part63-appeal-notice.pdf But then another website saying to use Form N244 - Application Notice of a request to a court to make an Order (But this seems to be for Civil matters i.e. used to set-aside CCJ's etc. Bit of a nightmare really, not much help/info from anywhere, I just need to know how to stop this as I personally believe we can stop this, but it's just a case of following the correct procedure. Thanks for any help
  9. Hi all. I had a letter from Buchanan Clark and Wells on the 27th August claiming that I owed two amounts to British Gas. The supply address they claimed I lived at is not an address I have ever lived at, but the address is one line short of my own. It is very similar and is often mistaken. Anyway, I sent them a letter advising them that I have never lived at this address and do not acknowledge the debt. I also asked them to provide me with a signed contract to prove otherwise. After this letter, they requested that I send proof of my address for the supply period to prove that I have not resided at that address, which I did do. They also advised that further action on the account has been ceased pending an investigation. They advised one month for this. Now, only a short time since this letter, they have sent me yet another formal demand pending further action. They are advising that they will be applying to the court for a judgement and blah blah blah. What are my options here? I have not acknowledged the debt. It is for a different address, albeit a very similar one. They haven't provided me with any evidence that I actually owe this debt, nor do they seem to have taken my evidence into account. Do I have to prove I don't owe this and didn't live at this address, or do they have to prove I do owe it and did live at the address? The final judgement on my credit report will be clear next month and I'll be damned if they are going to ruin it for something I don't even owe. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
  10. Having moved house i am using the energy suppliers that the seller used after moving out of my last house making the cut from British gas they have billed me for a disconnection fee and now a late payment fee(£14)! they claim i had a contract i never sighed anything.I only agreed to pay them for energy used The disconnection fee(£50) it never was disconnected as my buyers have picked up the supply can they charge this Have written to BG they have failed to respond Thanks:-D
  11. BEKO DG582WP gas cooker purchased online June 2010. When this cooker was about 8 months old it developed a fault where the grill would not stay lit after ignition - no matter how long the regulator was held in. I discovered that I could get around this by holding in the regulator and simultaneously jiggling the pin that operates the grill door's gas shut-off device, but at around the 11th month even this trick failed to work and I had to call for an engineer to fix the problem. It redeveloped the same fault around 6 months after the repair, but as the cooker was now out of warranty, I decided to start not shutting the grill door after use to prevent the shut-off device from sticking (it seems to me that the pin that operates the device may be too long, and when the grill door is shut it puts too much pressure on the device causing it to jam), but forgetting myself and shutting the door, leaving it closed overnight, has again rendered the grill useless. Where might I stand with Argos if I claim this is an inherent fault?
  12. Hi I recently switched supplier from Eon to another company. I received a call from Eon retention dept to ask why - ive moved to a capped deal and also because their monthly DD has now gone up to £270 (combined) and I cant pay that! Their rep was very helpful. She said my usage is enoromous and made the assumption that I lived with loads of people. She said that last year I used nearly twice the average household amount of gas. I asked her what I had used during the summer and she said 18000, which is half the average annual household useage. This set the alarm bells off for me. I havent used my central heating all during the summer. Even now the kids are moaning for me to put it on and because of the increase in my DD (was previously paying £170, now gone up to £270) I wont put it on. im a single parent, 3 kids, work full time so house is empty all day.In the winter, the heating is only on 6hrs maximum per day. I only have gas boiler, everything else is elec. After many many problems with my not very old but very unreliable boiler (18mths old) I replaced it last September with a Worcester Bosch 30CDi combi (which I understood to be most economical version...) When I have looked on the Eon energy tracker, it shows that my usage is increased by over 700%!!!!! on last year. I had an engineer call round to check that I dont have a leak. Thankfully I dont! The company that installed the boiler have been back and checked that same thing. They also then fired the boiler and then went to check how much - and said as expected, it was using a minimal amount...... Ive been taking meter readings for a week, but to be honest, Im not really sure what to do with them. Can anyone advise me where to do from here.
  13. Hi Folks, I moved into a privately rented property in March 2012. Agency introduced but landlady manages. I asked her about a strong smell in the kitchen a short time after I moved in, she denied any such smell. This week a plumber came round to sort a small problem with my heating. I asked him about the smell as it has persisted for 6 months, after a short inspection he found a gas leak, he fixed it and issued a Gas Safety Certificate!! My landlady seemed most displeased that I had cost her more money..... The very next day I smelt the same odour, as if there was still a leak. My landylady said by phone "well there is not a lot more I can do, a plumber has said it is sorted, you can move out if you like"!! She did however comment that her elderly mother (who used to live there) had mentioned an odd smell before...... The same afternoon I called out the emergency gas board. Lo and behold they found a gas leak!! The boiler was marked as dangerous and landlady approached to get it fixed ASAP. I have since found out that she is considering selling the property (hence being reluctant to spend out on boiler repairs etc). a) I am angry at her response and the fact I have been living in danger for months b) I was concerned that my gas bill was exceptionally high when I am barely here - can I ask her to knock some off my rent? c) her attittude to mine and my kids safety sucks. Advice please as I feel I am being treated unfairly, she takes £800 a month from me and I have been living in a place with gas leaking since I moved here. I now have no gas to the property until the plumber comes back next week Lynsey x
  14. Back in June BG decided to increase my monthly payment from £200 to £300. I wrote to them and asked them to maintain the original payment and received confirmation on 29 August that £200 was fine and to continue payment which I have reducing the amount owed to £600. I have then received several letters demanding full payment of the £1000 plus owed. On ringing their 'overseas' office via the freephone number I was told that my only alternatives were to pay the full amount or accept a pre payment meter, there was no other alternative, other than to be disconnected. I pointed out with reference number about the letter I had confirming the agreed payment and was told that they had nothing to suggest this on record and I either paid in full or he would arrange a meter. I eventually contacted the person who had agreed the continued payment and she confirmed yesterday that she did work for BG abd my arrangement stood. Today I took an out of area number and was told by the BG representative that the person mentioned did not exist there was nothing on my file, even though she had confirmed there was, about an agreement and if I didn't pay the now £800+ due I would be cur off. What is it with Bg are they on commission in India or wherever to get meters fitted ?
  15. Hi, First post and this site has grown huge since I last came on here so sorry if this is the wrong forum. I had a problem with a gas boiler repair and I ended up having to get another company (B) in to do the repair after the first company (A) failed after nearly three weeks with no hot water or central heating in Winter. (A) replaced the PCB without success. (B) also replaced the PCB and this worked. So my argument is that the PCB supplied by (A) is faulty. I have filed an acknowledgement of service and have been preparing my defence. I want to issue a counterclaim as company (B) did additional work on the basis that the parts supplied by (A) had been replaced. All very simple so far. My only complication is that (A) was engaged via an insurance backed emergency breakdown cover (I) which was supposed to payout for part of the costs. So in my counterclaim I want to include (I) as a party. How do I do that?!
  16. I moved into a flat in a shared building almost two months ago. Despite receiving gas to the property we haven’t been able to work out who our gas supplier is, or if we even have one. The landlord sorted out the electricity supplier but said that he had no idea who the gas supplier was. He said should just register with whoever we wanted to. That’s what I’ve been trying to do but I’m getting nowhere… I’ve tried ringing all the major gas suppliers to see if they have the property on their records. They have all told me that the information on the database for the building is incorrect/mixed up and it sounds as if only 2 of the 5 flats in the building are registered. Then they ask me for the serial number of our meter to set up a new account. The only number on the front of the meter looks like this: 000xxxxxxS. It’s an old imperial meter. I keep being told that this is the wrong number and that I should look for one beginning with G, but that is definitely the only number on the meter. The meters for the other flats look the same. I have also been advised to ring the MPRN helpline, but the individual flats are not registered on this database and consequently it only gives one MPRN for the whole building. I’m at a loss as to what to do next! I’m a bit worried that the gas supply will just stop at some point or that we’ll suddenly receive a huge bill.
  17. Hi not sure if this is correct forum, so please move if not. In my previous property i had pre-pay gas and electric meters. It was on dual fuel and i seemed to be spending too much on electric. I called british gas and asked them to stay on the phone with my while i check the meter settings. The guy advised me the meter was set up WRONG and it was wrongly charging me 30P a day surcharge. This amounted to £56 total. I phoned to sort this out and ended up speaking to an agent in south africa. She advised me that I would get the £56 back BUT as a "credit" to my new card meter in my new address. This meter is in my friends name but was told thats not a problem. I was told to use the pre-pay card THREE times in the SAME shop and the credit would transfer to this meter giving me back my £56. This didnt happen and took a while as there was enough credit already on the meter. I called back and asked to speak to the same agent. This wasnt possible and the new agent says there was no notes on the system to say she had credited the £56 to the new pre-pay meter. I still have not had my refund. How can i chase this with out being sent round the bushes like last time? Thanks

  19. Need advice urgently. I got a little behind with gas bill I am and always have been paying £70 a month by Standing Order. anyway, every time I try and set up a payment plan, always get through to an indian call center and all they want to do is take a payment and not listen. I do have a recorded telephone conversation telling them I had no objections at all in them fitting a prepayment meter. Despite this they got a warrant to change it on the 13th of this month. I never got a chance to tell my side at court (6th) also I never received human rights letter from rep, I sent him away and told him to post it. Didn't even get into a conversation with him. why should I pay for his visit. I don't want to pay the court costs and meter install charges when I already gave permission. Can I stop the warrant, have it put on hold until I at least get a chance to have my say in court? Time is tight ....how would I do this? thanks for reading series3
  20. Hello, i'm new here and didn't know if i needed to open a new topic, but here it goes...Last december someone from the BritishGas came to my house in the evening looking for somebody i did not know. The house was a shared one. He read the meters and asked for the names of the people i live with. I gave him mine and 2 more, saying that i m not the landlord and giving him the name of the landlord and his phone number. After a couple of weeks i received a letter asking me to pay about £500 for utilities.I talked to my landlord asked him to call british gas to change the name from the bill. After another week a letter from Wescot came demanding to pay the outstanding amount. I talked again to my landlord asking him to fix this, he said he called and told them that i am not paying the bills, giving them his name as he pays the bills. I moved in february from there, and2 weeks ago i received a letter from Wescot "Address Verification" demanding me to call urgently on 0844 to update my info. And today i got a Final Notice letter. I thought everything was ok since my landlord talked with them. I don't want to pay a penny as i paid my rent with bills included, and it was only a mistake that they put the bill to my name for one month. What should i do? do i ignore them hoping they will stop? i dont even know how they know my new address. i read some topics on them and i dont know what to do. help please with an advise! thank you
  21. british gas (now there is a misnomer if i have ever heard one..they are actually a french owned company) profits have risen by 23% in the last quarter, yet they are now saying that gas prices will have to rise again for the winter period! is it not now time for uk govt. to consider the renationalisation of all the utilities companies in the uk today. it is pretty obvious that we are now being bled dry by these companies, as prices rise year on year, all in the interest of shareholders and multinational companies. i do fear for our security of supply, and whether people can continue to absorb these hikes in prices that are year on year being put on us the paying customer. it is not like we actually have a choice, most of the big companies are very close to each other in price, and actually changing supplier can sometimes be more hassle than it is worth. we need in this country energy suppliers who are not totally reliant on making huge profits but are run by the people for the people
  22. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions... we got our house in 08 and we were informed that british gas were our energy suppliers, after a fwe phone calls they said they had no record of us and to contact the gas board who then advised us that we dont have a meter number so we are not registered for gas therefore do not have gas (we do have a meter and gas!!) we then continued to contact tansco and other energy suppliers including eon who supplies our elec but no one wants to admit to being our supplier! so we have not had a gas bill in the last 4 year and im worrying that the bill (if and when we get one) is going to be huge! any help please?!?!
  23. Hi there, I got a couple of emails from British Gas earlier today regarding 2 different account numbers. There were no names in the email. The email looks legitimate and when I called the phone number I also got through to British Gas. Here is the email: ************************************* Dear British Gas Services Customer We are writing to request that you contact us today on 0800 316 8845 to discuss your British Gas Services account. It is important that we speak with you immediately. Our opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.00pm. Please quote bill reference number XXXXXXXXXXX If you have made this payment in the last few days please disregard this email We look forward to speaking with you Regards British Gas Services Payments Team _____________________________________________________________________ The information contained in or attached to this email is intended only for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed. 24. Hi all, Long time member of this Forum but 1st post I moved into this flat back in July 2009. The previous tenant had left a while previous owing a lot in rent and utilities - in particular her Electric bills. I have never met the woman and her current whereabouts are unknown to my landlord (he would like to catch up with her as well) British Gas have been sending regular letters to her which i have always returned as "No longer at this address, return to sender" Up till now I was quite unconcerned by the whole thing, however.......... A couple of days ago i recieved a letter fromm Face2Face Contact, addressed to 'The Occupier' headed 'Warrant Notice Letter' stating that their records show that the this address is currently unoccupied and that they had made numerous attempts to gain access to the property to read and inspect the electricity meter. They then state they serve notice that they are applying for a Warrant of Entry at the local Magistrate Court under the Rights of Entry Act 1954 Section 2 and the application for the warrant is so they can enter the property and disconnect the electricty in accordance with para 8(2) Schedule 6 of the Electricity Act 1989. Entry to the property will be by force if necessary. At this point i hit the ceiling and contacted Face2Face and explained, as calmly as i could, that I wasnt the person that they're after. I have religiously paid EVERY electric bill i have received within a couple of days of receiving it. The woman i spoke to at Face2Face was very unhelpful and basically ignored everything i told her. Hopefully this will all come ot nothing but I'd hate to come home one night after a late shift and find the electric has been cut off for something that is nothing to do with me. Suggestions anyone?
  25. Hi I'm looking for some help regarding my gas/electric with British Gas. Due to my husband being off sick for over year I now have a £740 bill for my gas and £350 for my electric both of which need paying now or they will install a pre-payment meter and charge me upto £200 to install each meter. They have said if I agree to a meter then they won't charge me and they will only take £6 per week per debt. I have always been under the impression that you are charged more on a pre-payment meter but British Gas have said I will not pay any more than the tariff I am on at the moment as a credit customer. Is this true? They are installing the meters on the 10th Sept but if I clear the outstanding before this date I can canx the installation of the meters. Many Thanks for any advice.
