The thread title is misleading - he was not killed by benefit cuts. He was left with no money. Why didn't he seek any help?

Semantics ? I suspect that he gave up, as he did not feel supported. Did the Job Centre staff ask about his health and wellbeing before they cut the benefits ? Did they explain about the hardship fund and provide any help with this ?

We could do with some help from you.

Because his mental health was such that he didn't have the strength to appeal so accepted the sanction that the Government gave him due to attempts to cut the welfare budget. So the budget cuts led to the increased sanctions which are impossible to deal with if you do not have the mental capacity to fight them so indirectly the budget cuts did kill him so the title is not misleading. It's only those who are mentally strong or have family support that can get through this.

DWP spokespeople tend to deny that deaths like this tragedy are due to sanctions and are a consequence of a sanction mad regime

Too many sanctions are just stupid like being sanctioned for attending a job interview as opposed to a jobcentre appointment

I hope the next gov is more humane but labour tends to try to race to the bottom and the libation sold out thanks to Clegg

Perhaps he got fed up with begging and fighting for every miserly penny.

He had no food in his stomach, no electric left on his meter card, and £3.40 in his pocket.

If his diet regime was all over the place his thinking would not always be 100 rational anyway.

What a dreadful way to die, and all over a sanction for not attending an interview.

We treat murderers with more respect.

A few months back I would have said 'hung parliament' and another coalition but I think Cameron is starting to do all the pre-election stuff that stupid gullible people buy and he will get a majority. Put it this way, I am not happy with it but Milliband has no chance IMHO, far too weak and offers nothing

I fear you are right, Milliband is not even respected by some of his party, so what chance of being voted in.

I think Cameron will get in (and then heaven help those of us who are not fit enough to work) or need a little helping hand.

I heard IDS on the radio today, still banging on about 'cutting' the welfare bill.

Nearer the time, if Milliband is low in the polls they will eject him quicker then you can say 'bacon sandwich',

no animals have been harmed in the making of this post.

All rather sad and pretty disgusting. However, the govt. gets away with sanctions when Cameron can stand up in the House of Commons during PMQ's and state in answer to a question on benefits that ''sanctions were necessary when people refuse to take jobs offered to them''. Which is nonsense talk as people have to apply for said jobs, they do not appear out of thin air. Also, it totally ignores the nonsensical reasons jobseekers are given for their punishments:

Actually someone should be sacked.

there is clear guidance on hardship.

He would of been entitled for hardship from day 1 as he suffered a "chronic medical condition which results in a functional capacity being limited or restricted by physical impairment for at least 26 weeks and during the first two weeks your (Or their) health would probably decline more than that of a healthy person unless hardship payments were made.

Also diabetes fits the criteria for disability. Without medication as in this case the person will die. The system failed a solider, a disabled person. It is blatant systematic disability discrimination and MUST be challenged all the way to the European Court of Human Rights. Its about time someone came forward and took up cases like these.

My condolences to everyone effected by this :( Time for the Rage to rise and seek justice!!!!

This is very sad news and my heart goes out to the family.

So where was The Armed Forces Covenant part in this or has the Government forgot about this too.

This is my local Job Centre (sadly), they treat people like dirt, and i can guess which nasty advisor did this!

I want a t-shirt made up of the front cover of The Mirror with this story on it, just so i can remind them each time i sign on.

As for hardship, they don't tell you about it when your sanctioned, they just leave you to it.

My advisor didn't even bother to check my UJ account last week, they just let me sign my form and go, wonder if they actually feel a twinge of guilt...i doubt it!

They are married.

Yes I know, they were one of hte couples who fiddled hteir expenses swapping which home would be used for the most gain !

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/5325590/Ed-Balls-and-Yvette-Cooper-flipped-homes-three-times-MPs-expenses.html

During much of the period covered by the records seen by The Daily Telegraph, Mr Balls and Miss Cooper submitted regular claims for food, usually totalling up to £600 a month.

Tax payer was footing this couples monthly food billl - Yet we leave a soldier to die because he has no food !!

Did I miss something.

He has a good excuse, he was looking after his 'personal economy', whilst the 'country's economy' suffered.

Nicely timed, they start to tell the public that the economy is now in better shape than back in 2008 when the 'depression hit'.

Bit by bit they are upping the anti, and Labour seem to have nothing to offer back.

Sadly the public have short memories, I truly believe DC will get back into power and this time with NO help needed to form a government.

Not a lot to look forward to if this turns out to be the case.
