I moved into my new home on the Isle of Wight on 8th Feb and was giving a new phone number by BT, as soon as the phone was on line I was getting calls for a person who was not the old occupant of the house ( different name) after about 15 calls I dialled the numbers of the callers one was Cabot and the other Mackenzie Hall. I tried to tell both DCAs that I was the new owner of the number but they kept asking me for my name ( which I refused to give them ) or a ref number which I didnt have.

As I had printed and sent a lot of letters giving my friends and other people my new number I didnt want to have another new number

Anyway I phoned BTs nuisance call line and explained the situation and asked them to call the DCAs and tell them the phone no belongs to me with the proviso that BT did not give them any of my details, nice Indian chap rang me back from BT and confirmed they had done this

I have not heard a dicky bird from Cabot or MH for over a week now so it looks like Job done

Just thought this may help someone in the same position as me

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

Good idea. A lot of times these are treat as nuisance calls as hard to trace, but might be worth playing along with them to get details of who they want and let bt do the calling.

There must be millions of number changes and to be honest when harassed by rude dca we tend to change number, so they should accept bt telling them to bogoff.

  • 2 weeks later...

I moved from house on 8th Feb and was allocated a number by BT, within a day of getting my new number I was getting calls from Cabot and Mackenzie Hall looking for someone called Jackie - as its not me ( and not the person I bought my house from ) I contacted BTs Nuisance call line and they sorted it out - no more calls from the above DCA's

Tonight I got a call for another person called Jenny ( again not me and not the last residents of my house) when I asked who was calling they said Lowells, again I explained about the number and I was not the person they wanted, the guy got nasty and said he could prove that Lowells had had a call from my number last week about the debt and would be sending someone round Now I have not called anyone and spoken about any Debt and neither has Hubby and unless the Cat is keeping secrets from me there is no-one else in my home

Now I am bit worried that there seems to be two people who are being chased on my number or even worse one person using two names, and also worried that Lowells could get my address from my phone number and actually come round

Any ideas what I should do next.

Thanks

i was told BT dont issue dead number out until they have been inactive for at least 6 Months when i moved house.

Apart from if you request a number transfer from you old property to new.

or

You ask for the existing line number in the property to stay there. (thats unless onl owners transfer the number with them.)

So i would have thought the number linked to that address would not pair up.

Yep, tell 'em to foxtrot oscar and hang up on 'em :D

I get regular calls on my mobile for somebody I've never heard of (beats me, I've had the same number for 5 years) and the main swithcboard at work takes anything up to 20 calls a day from DCA's for people that have never worked there or indeed ever been known to anybody in the office.

Strange thing is no bugger ever calls me about my own debts ...... go figure that one

You'd think they'd check the data they hold before they call but as most of them can't read its probably asking a bit much of them

I know that i have had the same number for 5 years and same with my partner and we keep getting strange clls. I had one earlier today for a Mrs S Brown???? my partner keeps getting them for all sorts of ppl especially from 3 mobile.May i point out we have also been with the same phone company for the last 7 + years so god knows where they seem to think the nuber has anything to do with a old 3 contract.

I told them this number has been owned by me since june 2004 and as result they have phoned the wrong number they then went on to ask if i lived in Norwich told them yes but i last lived there when i was a young girl back in 2001.

My partner has a fun way of dealing with them just leave them on hold they will give in first.

From what i understand the only way they can link a phonenumber to a addy is

1) you have given them the phone number.

2) you keep the old number, but what sane person does?

3) they publish the number in the phone book or online.

As some of you may know when I moved and got a new BT number I started getting calls from DCAs for the previous owner of the number, at first I reported them to BTs harrasment department but that didnt stop them so now I just tell the person on the phone that Mrs @@@@@ does not have this number anymore so go away ( although actually I say F@@@ off )

Anyhow the point of this thread is that I have started getting automated calls sometimes 15 a day telling me not to hang up and waffling on about help with Debts, I didnt have this problem with my old number in London so I am assuming my new number must be on a data base of debtors somewhere, is there any way I can stop these calls, I dont get a number up on my phone just 'out of area' would call catcher help???

Its really beginning to annoy me now, and its not much fun saying F@@@ off to a machine

Just change the number or have their calls redirected to a porn [problem] in the Cayman Islands at £7 a minute.

That will teach them.

I have no legal training, any knowledge I have has come from this forum, and my own experiences. Always balance up any advice you get with your own common sense.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have posted a few times about the amount of Debt Collection Agencies who have rung my number to speak to someone I dont know who obviously is the old owner of my phone line.

Now the person they are trying to get hold of has a typical English name, as I cant use the name on here let's call her Julie Wilson.

Today I answered the phone ( International number) and a heavily accented Indian (female) voice asked to speak to the lady of the house, when I said yes thats me she then went into a spiel, now I didn't get the first bit only the name 'Julie Wilson' and Debt Management Agency.

I stopped her in her tracks and gave her the usual, no 'Julie Wilson' here, dont know her, we have had this number since Feb etc etc.

She then flummoxed me by saying that she was 'Julie Wilson' WTF???

Well says I its a bit of a coincidence you having the same name as the person that quite a few DCAs are trying to get hold of in fact I dont believe that's your name at all and put the phone down

Where do they get these idiots from????

BTW I do realise that there maybe people of Asian origin who either have or use European names but it's too much of a coincidence her having the same name as the old owner of the phone no, so I truly believe she got her script wrong and I am still laughing about it

I just legitimately cannot understand most asian dialects/accents. I wear 2 hearing aids now, and that has made it even worse. I also find Scots/Irish accents difficult too, in fact I can hardly hear anything:confused:

Hence I say, when answering the telephone, sorry, cannot hear you as I am deaf, please write to me! How come I get less letters than 'phone calls?

I refuse point blank to enter into any dialogue over the phone with anyone who cannot speak in clear English. I find it deeply frustrating having to constantly repeat myself and to be honest I simply have never entered into a relationship with a company who doesn't have a UK presence.

So many of the Asia based call centres have staff ''trained' to use a European name,I think to attempt to make you believe you are talking to a UK CALL

centre it usually fails as the operator has no knowledge of the UK or the customs and protocols used here.

"WHO SAID THAT?"

You don't half crack me up sometimes HS, what with your 'Allo Allo' post the other week, and you living in Scotland unable to understand their dialect.....I bet you have some trouble in the pub?..;)

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

Its because their real names are often unpronounceable

i too have had several of these phone calls anything up to 5 a day

i 1471 the nos (there were several nos but always a strong asian accent but some times a completely dead call or just noise) and googled it. it seems to be either a [problem] of some sort or cold calling for consolidation loans/debt management.

all the calls reported and commented on were very rude some even swearing at the recipient and became completely confused or flustered when questioned more about why they were calling.

but all seemed to be requesting banking info

some had the correct info about the house holder but some the same as the op had old info.

sounds like someone bought and old number list from somewhere and are pushing a very unsuccessful attempt at a [problem] as the callers are far from smooth operators:p
