I checked my credit report and there is a default to HSBC from 2010 for £167.

I tried to call to pay it off but couldn't pass security

went to the branch and they told me it was a closed account

and now being dealt with by Metropolitan Collections Services

All of the numbers I can find for them go through to HSBC giving me the same problem of passing security (i dont remember telephone banking passcode).

I've had no letters or anything,

just trying to clear my credit report

and this default is proving hard to get to the bottom of.

What can I do to chase it?

paying off the debt will not remove the default

that is there for 6yrs regardless.

please don't hit Quote...just type we know what we said earlier..

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...

What was the default for ?

Credit card - did they send you a Default notice where you would have had a statutory amount of time to pay the debt prior to them adding a Default Marker to your credit file ?

Current account overdraft ? - Did they send you a final reminder notice ?

I wouldn't be interested in paying this off at all, as DX says it's not going to improve your credit rating one jot, all you'll be doing is funding someone £160 for their profit pocket.

Forget it, if they've not bothered to contact you regarding this in the last five years then son's rattle their cage, reciprocate their ignorance.

Although you've committed the cardinal sin of ringing them, they will no doubt want some money for their mince pies and start harassing you.

In future never ring these clowns, if they ring you then laugh and hang up,

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

and why did they tell you metropolitan collection services, now renamed hsbc repayment services in order to avoid censure by the fca

Whilst the account might have been closed on the active list of HSBC, it is still being administered by a department of the bank.. eg... .HSBC Repayment Services.

HSBC should have written to all their delinquent account holders around the end of November 2014 advising that Metropolitan Collection Services (aka HSBC) were no longer administering the accounts and HSBC Repayment Services were.

The address is still the same as Metropolitan Collection Services and the Head of Repayment Services is still Gary D Jones

HSBC Repayment Services

PO Box 5338

Coventry District Service Centre

Binley Business Park

Harry Weston Road

Coventry CV3 9FR

Telephone : 0345 609 0545 (previously 0845 609 0545)

This was simply a change of name and took effect from 1st December 2014.
