Hello, just wondering if anyone can answer this for me?

I have decided to create a new email address after having my current 1 for almost 3 years and decided to have a change.

However, my new email address is: gay_guy1986 (yahoo), do you think my Job Centre advisor will have a problem with this email? if so how? I thought in the work place, its equal opportunities? what if he states, I need to change it because an employer might be homophobic and might not want to employ me, could this be the reason why he might have a problem with it? if an employer don't want to employ me based on my sexuality then surely he is in the wrong?

Just looking for help on this matter, thanks :)

Why do you need to advertise your sexual preferences in your email address?

So I can't advertise my sexuality now but its ok if straight people kissing in public? I don't think that's fair to us gay people, its not like my email address contains any sexual writing.

Nothing wrong with the email name at all and as you say, it shouldn't make any difference to prospective employers - but as in all walks of life, there will be employers who are prejudiced or racist or sexist. All part of life.

I can imagine an adviser saying something like 'Do you really need to state that you're gay in your email address? Why not leave mentioning it until you get an interview or after you've got the job?' Just thinking how they might look at it; hopefully it won't bother them at all but I gave up trying to predict the JC's actions ages ago.

Let us know what your adviser says (if anything)

Normally they claim it must be professional etc

I don't see a problem with the ID choice though

Any homophobe and homophobia is always wrong

Yeah, its wrong when people are homophobic, its 2014 for god sake :(

I asked one of my mates on facebook about the email address and he stated this:

The job centre or employers cannot discriminate against you for your email address just because your gay. In court they wouldn't have a leg to stand on and they know it. If this advisor making you feel uncomfortable put in a complaint.

So if I set up an email address at [email protected], that would be professional? Seriously, the advice you're getting here isn't based on homophobia.

Thank you.

OP you do what you want, if you think your choice of email address is professional, then you go for it.

No, they can't discriminate on the basis of your sexuality. But nothing about being gay requires you to put that fact in an email address - no more than I feel the need to advertise my own sexuality to prospective employers.

Hi Jasta11, thanks for your reply.

I give up with Job Centre's actions as well as sometimes I don't know where I am with them. and yeah, I will let you know on Friday if he states something as that is when my next appointment with my Job Centre advisor.

Well I found out that when people do go for an interview then will have to fill in a form which states what sexuality you are, I don't know if that's true or not, so what does it matter if my email contains what sexuality I am?

It is true that some employers do "equal opportunity monitoring", and will ask you to state things like your race, religion and sexual identity. It's not compulsory to answer those questions, and even if you do, the people doing the hiring should not have access to that information.

As to why it matters, it has nothing specifically to do with being gay. Like I said, ilikegirls or natalie_portman_is_hot would be equally inappropriate.

I love those equal opportunity monitoring forms because there is no wrong answer, it's all about how you self-identify. I always describe myself as a Chinese bi-sexual Quaker.

Yes. I don't like these kind of forms - always want information for 'Monitoring' purposes and to make sure they're treating everyone the same (that'll never happen).

The world is mad these days. The old gits - like me - remember when an employer gave you the job purely if they liked your face. They only wanted your name and address for your wage slip and tax paperwork and that was it. They weren't interested in anything else about you as long as you could do the job. The way it should be still.

...then the Personnel Officer of the 70's (always just the one guy) suddenly turned into the large HR Department of the 80's and things went rapidly downhill..

*if I had to make a suitable email address it would have to be [email protected]* :)

Then why the stupid term "advertise"?

Is there some sense in which a straight man applying for jobs using the email address [email protected] wouldn't be "advertising" his heterosexuality?

That's probably the easiest way to get yourself sent on a few useless courses.

However, I don't know if you can be mandated to give your email address to the Jobcentre. Personally, if it's possible I'd use whatever email address I chose and simply not tell them what it is.

Yeah, I have the same problem with supermarket checkouts, just can't use them. Do I get sympathy for this affliction, do I hell I get called a shoplifter. Surely this is discrimination?
