Hi,

I have a Halfords battery that I bought brand new in late 2009. I remember I paid cash for it and put the receipt aside in what I thought was a safe place. I now can't seem to find the receipt as I need it to return the battery as it is completely DEAD. It came with a 5 year warrenty as it says so on the side of the battery.

I have two cars, one a Golf TDI which I use for daily commute and the other a Volvo for which this battery was in. I would only use the Volvo a few times a month but I wouldn't have expected the battery to die after a year or so of using it on and off.

I've tried everything to get it going. I even put it into my Golf and kick started it down a hill then did a 40 mile motorway commute but when I tried to start the car, nothing. A little bit a crank which was all it gained in a 40 mile journey, so the battery in my book is toast.

The battery died around 6 months ago and it has been a doorstomp ever since as I can't find the receipt and figured they won't accept it back as I paid cash which means no proof like a bank statement etc.

Any advice? Can I still bring it back under the SOGA even though I don't have a receipt?

Thanks!

well there should be a date stamp in the form of several clock like dials

moulded into it or its flap somewhere

with pointers on it somewhere that show date of manu.

if its die

then i'd phone halfords.

you dont HAVE to have proof of purchase as such.

dont think soga will assist your here.

there is no relationship at all between SOGA and warranty.

nope warranty or not, soga is nothing to do with it at all they are not linked.

ok yes the two of them being 'actie' in terms of a 'claim' migh add weight.

but soga in your instance, i would think is well passed its resonable time.

regardless of how a battery is used or its appliance, pers i'd never entertain SOGA on a battery outside of max 3yrs.

but your case i terms of the warranty is rock solid

the thing says its got 5yrs stamped on it.

it will have a date code somewhere too.

if i was halfords i'd cough end of even without a receipt.

is it sealed maint?

Hmm, sorry. I just checked and it says 4 years guarantee, not 5 years lol. That is my other battery. But still it should be fine.

The problem is, I have looking all over the battery for a date stamp, or a code of some sort that could relate to a date but NOTHING.

Any ideas where to look? After some googling this battery hit the shelves in 2007. So if they use that as a start point that means it has already run out of its guarantee time frame. :(

Just because its "dead" doesn`t mean its "faulty" 99.99% of battery failures in service are due to charging & useage issues not manufacturing faults. A battery just stores electrical energy - if you take out more than you put in eventually you will have a "dead" battery. If a battery is only used intermittently it gradually goes flat. Repeat that enough times and it becomes "deep cycled" -see guide on post 9 - not a manufacturing fault. If a battery is only used intermittently you should really leave it connected to a decent maintenance charger to maintain charge. May be possible to get it back, sometimes a heavy duty charger with a boost will initate a charge, then trickle charge, you may be lucky.

Yes as DX says I paid cash. Mistake. :(

Any ideas if its possible to "rent" an heavy duty car charger? I used a car battery trickle charger but the thing is so small it is a joke. Couldn't charge my AA batteries if it wanted to. Plus I think the last time I had to use it, it caused the socket to start sparking. Lol.

have you got a digital multi meter?

stick it on DC volts 20volt range

measure the battery voltage

what voltage does it read?

If the worst comes to the worst - I had a slightly better battery replaced in Costco that went in in 2008. I have been out the UK most of the time, and the car had not been used before summer for over three years.

http://seekpart24.com/bosch/starter-battery-92s50070

Same capacity but this has slightly higher cold cranking.

Criteria

  • Hold-down Type: B13
  • Voltage: 12 V
  • Cold-test Current, EN: 750 A
  • Battery Capacity: 74 Ah
  • Pole Positions
  • Length: 278 mm
  • Width: 175 mm
  • Height: 175 mm
  • Terminal Type: 1

£71 in Costco, five year warrranty, and Bosch.

Just found it in Halfords - £43 more!
