Why don't people donate?

Are we're asking the wrong question?

 

Why do people donate?

 

If we know why they do, we can then repeat that process...

 

Happy days.

 

People donate when they feel they "owe" something, maybe not in the common sense of the word "owe". But for example, if you are sitting there with a Court Claim form in your hand not knowing what to do next and feelings of panic take hold of you and then someone comes along and explains what it means, what the possible consequences of the process are, how to respond to the form and then give you step by step instructions on where to go to find the information you need to fight it, suddenly the feelings of panic subside and are replaced by feelings of gratitude. You then want to "repay" that help in some appropriate way; which isn't necessarily cash. But whatever someone does to make themselves feel content that they have "paid back" for the help they got will make them feel good; and its that feeling of giving back which makes people want to donate!

 

Most people feel better to give than to receive; its a fundamental fact about the human psyche.

If I could give more I would, but I just can't. My local garage think it is hilarious that I put petrol in my car at under £2 a time. £1.26 once - because that was all I had in the world. I have 44p in my account right now, so a standing order for even a £1 would bounce and incur an £8 fee.

 

I am so very grateful for all the help I have had here. It has saved my life, but that doesn't mean I can give any more right now.

 

Like babybear I try very hard to help everyone I can on the forum. I know love doesn't make the world go round, but personally I can't do more than offer to help others.

DD, you just keep doing as you are doing and helping as much as you can, love doesn't make the world go round and DCAs won't accept love in lieu of payment, but those of us that are more fortunate (I'm not saying I'm rich; if I was I would have paid off all the credit card debts regardless), but just recently I have been getting a bit more well paid work (self employed as a teacher), so I can make some donations and therefore have done. Of course, now work has run out until September, so I may not be able to make many more donations until then. The point is though, if anyone who can contribute, does, even small amounts, this will see the site through until those who can't now can. Simple logic really, so some love to our fellow people in dire circumstances can help this site and can help our world go round more smoothly!

 

And, despite what he said above, I'm sure car would agree with this!

CAG certainly don't want people who are struggling financially to feel guilty about donating - that's not what the site is about.

 

As has already been said, people give in different ways - supporting another user through desperate times is priceless and has been proved to be a life saver on more than one occasion, and for that we are extremely grateful.

 

All contributions whether moral support and advice for others who need help, or financial donations are equally important.

Thank you Colin and Ell-enn,

 

I did donate last Autumn and expect to do so again, but since February two sources of my income have dried up unexpectedly and a payment due on Monday last week hasn't come in and I'm being asked to be patient. Thank God the child allowance comes in tomorrow.

 

The point I was trying to make is that it isn't possible for some people to set up a SO or Direct Debit for even £1 because this could result in getting bank charges. My bank is absolutely horrible by the way. I can have a reserve but not an overdraft - probably because I am challenging the credit cards. I've paid about £500 so far this year for using it because I've had no choice. Usury, or what.

I recently bought a CAG e-mail address (though I qualify for the concession) & will contribute a few quid when I can. Unfortunately like a lot of people I am unemployed and skint... but CAG has transformed our lives. Thanks (diolch) all.

Hi Conniff-

Might as well chip in.Have a little chat.

Well personally i have always managed to try to claim back when the door has just been shut.

But have had a lot of valuable advice.Which when you get gives as someone said instant relief and a feeling of you are not alone.

Known i suppose as a skint member.And not hiding that fact.Just the way it has worked out.

A serial entrepreneur who has yet to find the winning formula not for the want of trying.

Do not ask me what i have tried it may fill in to much space.But if you want to feel free.

 

Now i do not know how tight things are for the CAG,but yes the site must have helped tens of thousands of people getting back millions of pounds in total.

And must need donations to help a little.Keep things running smoothly.Cover expenses etc.

I just went back to the Payday Loans Thread to check on where the donate button was.

Yes it is there.And people have got back a few pounds on there.Probably relieved and pay back other debts perhaps.And at the time they may have a few pounds to spare.

This is when i feel you have to grab their attention.Make them hit the donate button.At that time.But how,hard to do.

Well a suggestion and do not forget how many of my ideas have failed even if bounced along for a while,never made it big.

 

Look for the FORUMS where people are getting the bulk of money back,the PPI, the Payday Loan refunds,wherever and perhaps have a pinned thread.Similar to Twitter.

Always right in your face.At the top before any threads appear.Always will be read.Why not.

Well i just thought i would pop in and say hello and hope everything keeps bobbing along or expanding even in years to come.

Thanks TW, as always a smashing post. Cag doesn't want to beg, they would like people to give freely as everyone on here gives their time and experiences freely. No amount is too small and as someone once said, every little helps. I wonder who that was

 

It is sad that a lot come and go having been helped and don't even say thanks and even more never let us know the outcome after being given assistance. That's life I suppose, but I would hate to see this site close for the lack of running funds.

Personally I would have a big Please Donate button on the main page, but that's the bosses decision.

 

If they used the same forum software as me https://no1forum.co.uk they could use the banner I use to notify of free software to request donations.

I like a lot of others I suspe!ct do my odd bills a couple of times a month, if I see I have some extra I will donate to whoever. I just run down the list,put an amount in the box and click done, or as said commence a so. Is it not possible just to have account details on the donate page ?

Wikipedia has a donation push every so often.. Why not on cag? Basically a big pop-up type thing saying "donate £3" or similar.

 

Just like Wikipedia does.

 

When people log on to see how the thread is going the message appears. This would be every so often. Once a month maybe.

I am a bit of a luddite when it comes to all this stuff. I only bank online because I have no option,. I just think it would be an easier option for many not just me. I have the BKPA Christies Hospital and children in need all on the direct payment screen on my computer banking screen, and i usually manage to make some kind of donation every week as said it is easy because when i do my budget i can see what i can afford and donate accordingly.

Just saying for me it would be a lot easier and i cannot be the only one..

Well now i have read this thread and noticed where the donation buttons are i have noticed the donate button on the left flashing.

Has this been flashing long.I just thought i would ask.

Now we just need a small ten second message and then a small tune after it.

Any ideas what tune.Underneath it a link that you hit.
