Ofcom has created an online tool that lets people see what kind of mobile coverage they should be getting.

The coverage map is based on data provided by mobile operators as well as Ofcom's own testing of signal strengths around the UK.

The webpage has gathered data about the quality of voice calls as well as 3G and 4G data.

The watchdog said it was seeking feedback to fine tune the map to make it more accurate.

I can't see that ofcom has visited every estate in the country to check this out. What I can see is when someone makes a complaint about lack of signal, the companies will say 'tough' Ofcom says it's ok. I also suspect that the majoirity of data came from the companies and was just compiled by ofcom.

Having taken a look, I can't see any red whatsoever so the whole country has great coverage according to Ofcom.

We can't make voice calls indoors on any network we;ve tried - and yet the tool says we should have no problems - not very accurate.

Very accurate for me.

I used to have Vodaphone - had to go to the end of the garden to be able to use mobile for calls.

I now have EE and coverage both indoor and outdoor for phone and 3G and 4G coverage is perfect - not just the area I live in either, it is good almost everywhere I have travelled.

It lies, reception where I live is terrible at times, depends where you are in the building, and when you are at the Royal Marsden hospital you can't get a signal out unless you are very lucky.
Many hospials will have mobile phone signal jammers / blockers, to prevent the use of phones potentially interfering with sensitive hospital equipment, plus to avoid distressing the patients.

According to the map I shouldn't have any problems at home or when driving when on the nearest motorway, but that simply isn't true. The coverage in my area by O2 is appalling.

As said earlier, that is because they didn't go here there and everywhere but got their figures from the companies themselves so pretty meaningless.

Ofcom is one of those clever organisations set up to make us believe we are protected, but in fact all it protects is the Govt's own interests.

For the consumer they have absolutely no use whatsoever and as has been said, they're collating existing data, not doing a real live study to establish coverage.

Nope. Tried in Edge, Chrome and Firefox.
You have to select network, signal, and location before it shows coverage.

For my area it shows good Vodafone 4G coverage, yet I have never had a 4G signal inside or outside, and Vodafone themselves say they don't provide it in our area (and have no plans to do so).

I had a feeling I was not seeing the woods for the tree's. Thanks. It also said my area was OK when in fact it's rubbish. You have to stand in a certain spot in the house to get a 1 bar signal that 'sometimes' works. Even outside you need to take a walk up the road to get more than a bar. I have one of those Three boxes that uses the internet for calls instead.

Yes, I've got a Vodafone 'Sure Signal' box that does the same - intermittently. Having said that, the 'raw' signal is a little better than it was ten years ago, but I expected it would be much better by now. Ho-hum.
