Home Insurance Endorsements

Recommended Posts

I have received my renewal notice for my house insurance which has a 3 year fixed price premium. This is my second year of fixed price, but I have noticed that NEW ENDORSEMENTS have been added to the schedule for which my property may not meet, without some expenditure on my part.

I presume my insurance is invalid if I don’t take remedial action…are new endorsements legal midway through a fixed price term?

What sort of endorsement is it that your property may not meet? Something major or a minor thing you could sort out at not too much cost?

You haven't got a 3-year policy, you've got a one year policy with a pre-agreed ('fixed') renewal premium for 3 years. You'll need to read the policy to check but I doubt that anything in the fixed price wording says they can't change the cover at renewal each year.

But obviously no point in having a policy which now won't cover you so you need to go back and discuss it with them before renewal. And if the insurer insists move to another insurer from renewal. Or do the work that would be needed to make your property compliant if that is feasible. If it's a standard endorsement they are adding to all policies they are unlikely to change it for you.

Refers to additional locks on external doors..eg patio door, conservatory door….etc.

i presume it would invalidate if break in occurred through one of these doors….but hopefully all other aspects covered?

Well if I were you I'd install the additional locks.  It's not as if making your house more secure against break ins isn't also a benefit to you.  It's not much fun being broken into even if you are insured.

If you don't it might invalidate the whole policy. You'd have to study the wording in detail to see what could happen if you are in breach of the requirement in the endorsement.

Unfortunately it is impossible to fit additional locks in the location suggested (top and bottom) because of door construction,..on one of the doors

Are you sure the locks don't comply to standard required ?

My experience is most people don't really know what locks they have installed and don't know whether they are equivalent to what the Insurers have stated are required.

Suggest you look into what locks you have more closely.

We could do with some help from you.
