Accident in Thailand Need Advice

My daughter as been knocked down in Thailand by a taxi that sped off

 

 

she has abrasions to her hands, arms and has lost her toe nails.

 

 

She did attend the police station but I know very little.

 

 

She as asked me to get advice as to what she does now concerning a claim she is wishing to make.

 

 

She is a lecturer of sport and should be returning back to college Monday but I assume she is in no fit state to carry out physical education.

 

She has made her way to Bangkok with her 4 year old daughter - they return home Thursday.

 

 

She has asked me to ring her GP to make appointment for her to see a nurse to dress her injuries on her return. Any advice appreciated.

 

 

I have asked her if she got a crime reference number but she as not answered me back due to the time difference.

I don't know what you are expecting to be covered in this situation. I suspect that the Travel Insurance will only cover the treatment of injuries abroad. It won't offer any compensation for the accident event or anything back in the UK, in terms of time off work, costs gaining further treatment in the UK as that will be via the NHS.

 

If your daughter had life changing injuries such as loss of limb or sight then there is personal accident cover up to a certain amount. But fortunately from what you are saying this is not the case.

 

The policy wording for the Insurers product can be viewed on their site.

 

As far as I know Travel Insurances would not over any employment related losses and specific accident insurance related to employment would be needed.

Daughter must have rang the insurers as she asked me for the details. What I know is sketchy I assume the hospital would have charged her and she`ll be hoping to claim that back on the insurance, cannot imagine how traumatic this was for her as she said her daughter was hysterical she took her there as a treat before she as major life saving heart surgery.

Normally you have to follow the rules shown in the policy and I suspect she would have to phone the emergency helpline from abroad to register the claim. The Insurers may have dealt directly with the hospital, rather than your Daughter paying and claiming when she got back. It probably does not matter if she has dealt with it herself, but she needs to make sure she has a fully detailed note from hospital about the treatment and charges, plus something from the Police to confirm that they were informed.

 

Hope the surgery works out all OK. If it is your Daughter with the heart issue and not your Grandaughter, then she would need to be careful, if she did not mention it while arranging the Insurance. Although the accident event had nothing to do with the heart issue, it is not unknown for Insurers to try to use unrelated issues to avoid a claim. It should not come up, as it was an accident event and not illness.

Grandaughter as a hole in her heart it deterioated rapidly they took her into Leeds a month ago for key hole surgery it failed so now it is open heart surgery asap really appreciate the support and advice

Must be very testing time for the family. Most decent employers would allow paid time off for the mother & father in these circumstances.

Yes she will get paid time off for this Uncle Bulgaria my daughter tells me sadly the other tourist who was hit in the accident as been rushed by speedboat to another island to have his foot removed and his bill is currently running at £15,000 sad when the police do not speak English to assist the tourists and with the ambulance rshing people off to hospital non one got any witness statements. So relieved my daughter and grandaughter are not badly injured can`t wait for their return home

I have seen a few travel programmes where they have shown the chaotic road conditions in many parts in Asia. I would not feel safe, as you have to be constantly checking front/back/left/right. They don't appear to drive within any set rules and don't even stop for people at crossings. You cannot even rely on traffic lights being observed.

 

Some of these private foreign hospitals will charge far more than they would if it were a local person. They see tourists as a way of making money.

So true my daughter as travelled all over the world she has took a year off work to travel twice now around Asia, America, Australasia, South America she as witnessed some horrific things and was even stuck in the Tsunami she was missing from boxing day to New Years day we was frantic she won`t stop travelling she as been in the rain forest, out in the jungle, all over South Africa, New Zealand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, India, Maldives, Mauritius, Cook Islands, Thaiti, Fiji, Ghana she was recently in Peru, Venezula, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina (saw Hussain Bolt run there) Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, Chilli, and Uruguay, my grandaughter speaks fluent Spanish having travelled throughout her 4 years. My daughter as taught the underprivledged along the way and done many charity runs in different countries she as gone out into the jungle in Africa and took school equipment and helped build class rooms. She as ran up and down Table Top mountain for charity. I hope this ordeal as no more put her off than the Tsunami did. She certainly as led life to the full so proud of her but as a mother I do worry as she goes off the beaten track and not in the tourist areas.

Obviously has the taste for travel ! The more you do it, there more you realise how expensive it is in the UK and how overcrowded it is. Although some of these countries mentioned are poorer, they seem to be happier in some ways.

 

I have been to New Zealand and thought is was great, once you left Auckland. So much great scenery, without ever feeling like there are too many people. On the south island, you can drive for ages without seeing another car.

She as canoed down the river in Cambodia seen very poor children, she hired a motorhome in New Zealand, she generally has a car or motor scooter and tells me of how cheap some of the places are she was surprised how expensive Chile (£1,000 cost her for a week self catering with accommodation) and she said the people were very unfriendly, her favourite places are Bora Bora, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. I do not blame anyone who is fit and healthy and who can afford to broaden their horizons. Took her 2 hours driving in Empangou Kwazulu-Natal to the nearest town in South Africa this is where her husband is from sadly he could not travel this time due to being selected for 6 weeks jury service.

Chile is a bit of an odd country. I am not quite sure how they earn their money. Apart from ripping off tourists, as I am sure local rents are not very expensive, because the country is relatively poor. I know someone from Chile and they lived there when there were problems under Pinochet, when troops would kick down the doors of student accommodation looking for anti-government protestors. They also lost their mother in a motoring accident when on their way to church. God works in mysterious ways. When there are any church services, people drive like idiots to the church and they get fatal accidents occuring. Chilean people from what I have experienced are friendly, but they have a particular way about them. They can be a little direct and rude, but it is just they way they are, nothing personal.
