Stopped by Police after visiting Tesco

If anyone thinks that eager Security guards are restricted to RLPs employ then listen to this one.....

 

I was in my local Tesco today looking for a holdall for my flight (Going away tomoz)

 

They had some last week reduced for a fiver.

I spent around 15 minutes looking (I had bought 40 cigarettes and a £5 phone top up from kiosk beforehand )

 

Anyway realising they had none left I went out of the store and headed into the town centre which is 2 mins away.

 

As I got into main square 2 coppers jumped out of their car and said to me can you go over there ?

They walked me to side area and asked "Have you just been into Tesco " ?

I said yes why whats the problem ?

They said you have been reported as acting suspicious....

They asked for ID ...I had my passport on me as I was going to buy currency.

I said I was suprised at thios since I live only 5 mins from the store and have been going in there 3 times a week since it was a Safeways store !!

Seems they have got new security.

I am not having none of it....so subject access off to Tesco I want the CCTV stills and the notes that triggered me being stopped.I have never been in trouble with the Police nor had any reasons for question.

I should be packing my bloody case not doing a SAR.It seems cause I had a bobcap on and a tracksuit I "Looked" suspicious !!

Will let you know what transpires-they have picked on the wrong one here.

Off now to finish my packing and see you in a week.

They was totally out of order, im sure they will get whats coming ! i had a similar problem whilst staying at Butlins ! Have a good holiday.

By the way-I did go back into the store to complain to customer services-but thought its a waste of time.

I have sent the letter addressed to the Data Protection Officer with the info from the ICO website.

No pussyfooting with me-Game on.!!

I am playing it strictly by the book.

I know very well that there are differing criteria for requesting CCTV images (I am a CCTV Installer myself so am aware )

I also know that to supply this is not something they like to do.

No doubt it will be a tussle since they will try to say that they are covered under crime preventitive measures bla bla bla....but no crime was committed and I will have the buggers for this one.

This sounds pretty much par for the course - don't you know that there are terrorists behind every corner, just itching to blow us up?

 

I'm guessing that it must have been a slow day in town for the boys in blue to have responded to curtain twitching from supermarket security guards.

To which your response should have been "I do not carry identification, nor am I required to do so". Identifying youself is not required until the point of arrest, and only then if it a lawful arrest.

 

I'm not sure what an SAR for any CCTV would achieve, other than obtaining a short £10 video clip.

 

Your complaint, if any, is that the police had no business to stop you. However, as you cooperated with their informal questioning, there is no basis for a complaint.

Oh dear Martin,it sounds like a muppets convention.

 

Most (well some) well trained security staff would hardly ever ask the Police to do a stop- search,and don´'t the police have to give you a form nowadays (i am sure they do!),to state the reason for the stop?(Assuming this was classes as a stop search)

 

How very dare you go into a shop and look for something,then walk out.A hanging offence,I would have thought.

 

What exactly IS the definition here of looking suspicious,answers on a poscard.

Erm....to the kitchen to wash some dishes.

Actually no I did them this morning.

I will wait for their reply-I sent it to the data controller directly at their DC offices so realistically the letter should be on his desk by now.

I know what will happen-they will say they are looking into it and probably get a report from the store-and get CS to respond.

I didnt send a tenner - I asked for the procedures or forms to enable me to make an official request-this is usual if you are looking to make a request for CCTV images.

My mate says I will probably end up with 50 quids worth of vouchers and a sorry letter.

I tend to think he may be right,but I will be revealing all here as it unfolds-you can be sure of that.

I could quite easily turn 50 quids worth of vouchers into £150 by going in there at 8pm and buying some reduced stuff from the bargain cabinet......I may even buy a new bobcap.

Couple of posts temp unapproved.

By my calcs they have until next Friday to respond.

If they dont I wont be pussyfooting-next step will be a 14 day letter before action.

This weekend another 2 people pulled me up in town asking whats gone on-you cannot get stopped right outside the towns Weatherspoons pub and expect no one to notice.I have been a DJ in my town centre for almost 20 years in most of the pubs and bars and so not exactly unknown.

I dont need any Solicitors or CAB for this-I will follow it through myself and let a Court decide if its ok for the likes of like Tesco to target people at will, when and as they think they feel like doing so,without just cause or valid reasons.

I am not just doing this for me-I want to send a message that may hopefully prevent the same from happening to others.

It may be they will just hang on to their " you were seen acting in a suspicious manner" story ,and stick to it.You might not get an apology.It's not good practice for a security person to pass on such vague concerns to the Police,in fact,decent companies expressly forbid this,however there aren't many decent companies about any more..
