I just purchased a used car from a private seller. I have insurance on my previous car still active, and the seller of the used car still has insurance on the car I purchased from her.

Therefore once i'd viewed the car and decided to buy it, she said it was ok for me to drive home third party as she was insured. She also told me that the insurance she had on the car ran out in a months time and she would just "let it run" instead of cancelling it.

My question is therefore, when I cancel my previous car insurance tomorrow and cover the new car there will in effect be TWO insurance policies on the same vehicle.

Is this OK? or should I ask the seller to cancel her insurance first.

Thanks

UKD.

Check your insurance. Normally your insurance has a provision that allows you drive a purchased car.

The old owner can cancel whenever. They dont need to keep it running

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

I'm with you... but the attitude of the seller was "its only got less than a months insurance on it now so i really can't be bothered cancelling it".

I suppose you'd only really be fraudulent if you were to have an accident and claim twice!

It's your car now, you take out your policy and let her do as she pleases. She's probably letting it run until she gets another car so as to keep her no claims bonus (assuming it's protected no claims so you cannot affect it)

Always insure a newly acquired vehicle asap.

Brig: yes of course. thats what i want to do, but am just worried that the car will be insured twice. I assume if stopped, the fact that the previous seller hasn't cancelled her insurance isn't my concern?

Makes no difference if it's insured twice, you will only be claiming on your cover if necessary.

Any Letters I Draft are N0T approved by CAG and no personal liability is accepted.
