I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who contributes on this website, in particular this PDL sub section.

My PDL trap started because I developed a gambling addiction. And when I can sign up to a website, fill in a few fairly simple forms and have £400 sitting in my bank account 15 minutes later what is there to lose? Screw the interest charges, because I'll have turned that £400 into thousands with a bit of gambling.

And a familiar story then took over, I gambled away one PDL, so took another out to 'cover' the other PDL yet gambled that one too, you get the picture. I sort of kept on top of all the repayments etc so on the whole they never really reached the stage of threatening me with false legal action etc, although I suddenly realized most of my pay was starting to go to these companies in rollover charges alone so I had no chance of paying off the actual loans! Of course during this rollercoaster ride I got my 'huge wins' from time to time with gambling, yep you guessed it they went straight back in the machines!

I admitted my gambling addiction to my parents on Friday 28th October 2011 after losing close to my entire October wage in one day on Thursday 27th October 2011 and wrote down exactly what I owed to all the various PDL companies (I have other debts but since this is the PDL forum I'll just concentrate on those):

Payday loans copied and pasted from my notes on the 28th October so any reference to 'today' refers to that date

1monthloan : Original loan £300, due to make a £90 rollover payment today which declined, currently owe £390 plus they've already whacked on a £12 'late fee'

PaydayUK : Original loan £480, due to make a £120 rollover payment today which declined, currently owe £600 I think? All that shows up on the website is the rollover fee so I can't be 100% accurate on that.

Payday Express : Original loan £400, due to make a £100 rollover payment today which declined, currently owe £500. Think these 'try' for 7 days before getting nasty?

Speedy Dosh : Original loan £200, due to make a £62.50 rollover payment today which declined, currently owe £267.50. Got an email saying if they can't take payment a £125 fee will be stuck on after 3 days!!! So these could be fairly tricky customers to deal with?

QuickQuid : Original loan £850, due to make a £191.25 rollover payment today which declined, currently owe £1041.25

Wonga : Original loan £1085, Already on a payment plan with these. £117.76 a month with 7 mionths left = £942.08. This is fine, as it is the original loan amount plus one month interest.

Toothfairy Finance : Original loan £400, rolled over 24/10/11, currently owe £544

Txtloan : Original loan £200, owe £234

Wage Day Advance : Original £150, rolled over 26/10/11, currently owe £194.25

Mini Credit : Original £150, rolled over 07/10/11, currently owe £198

The Loan Store : Original £500, rolled over 26/10/11, currently owe £625

Mr Lender : Original £300, rolled over 26/10/11, currently owe £390

Without calculating it all up again, the figure came to just under £6000 :jaw: There was simply no way I could have ever got myself out of that!

Anyway with the help of my parents, the lot of them have now been cleared apart from Wonga as no point in paying them any quicker with the repayment plan in place while other debts are building up interest.

I realize not everybody here has parents who can just 'bail them out' like I did. Although 'bail me out' means they've got me out of the trap that was about to get a lot worse, I'll be repaying them back in full over the next year of course. But it was the posts and members on this site that pushed me to wake up to what I had got myself into with the PDLs and admit everything in the first place, I cannot thank you enough.

Another positive is Sunday evening around 6pm will be exactly a month 'gamble free' :-)

Congratulations, it isn't easy admitting a gambling habit, particularly the machines as they are somehow 'acceptable', as is bingo....

If you look at the gambling 'logically' it is a form of self-harm, rather than something that helps your self-esteem.

Paying back these companies has now given you back control of your life and your finances - and your parents are a credit in many ways in helping you out.

Please don't slip back into the trap.

Don't get me started on gambling and self esteem....... IMHO it is low self esteem that makes you pray to gambling, you are invited in, treated well, maybe even made to feel like a friend.....Low self esteem is nothing to be ashamed of, as my therapist says, we all have it at times, its just klnowing the patterns and applying logic to your thoughts

  • 3 weeks later...

Please don't double post as it makes things confusing.

I think you ought to contact them first and see what they say, don't be threatening or quoting legal stuff you don't underdstand.

You also need to set up a new bank account with either the Halifax (Easycash online account, setup online), Co-op or the Post Office and get your income transferred into the new account in case they want to 'raid' it.

Did you write cheques for this loan or give your debit card details?

Money Hole - This is the post I have been hoping to find. I am almost in exactly the same position. Through a horrible gambling addiction I have managed to dig such a deep hole over the years but in recent time and the emergance of PDLs I have slipped to rock bottom.I owe around £6k too and it covers around 13 different lenders, I already owe my parents a fortune from previous requests for help when I was younger so am now in a position where I cant ask anyone.I need to dig them out the hard way but it is just so difficult, I have a wife and 2 children and they have suffered enough from my stupid actions in the past but I cant imagine how hard this is going to get.Ive started trying to contact everyone and explain my position, some have been understanding, others not so and a couple have just point blank ignored me.
