I am fairly sure that DCA's are not allowed to withhold their phone number. Not sure what you can do about that though.

Where does this come from ? There are rules from OFCOM about companies cold calling people, using various ways of not being detected so that people cannot complain, for example if they are registered with the telephone preference service.

DCA's transmit made up numbers when dialing according to reports on CAG. They will transmit a local number to the debtor, so if the debtor can see the number phoning them, they may pick it up. They change the numbers all the time to get around call blocking.

We could do with some help from you.

I'm registered with TPS but still get a lot of unsolicited calls. I never answer numbers I don't recognise anyway. The voicemail message left a Kilmarnock number to call back. :lol:Needless to say I am not going to  Thank goodness for caller display and voicemail. Oh yes, SB letter suitably drafted and waiting a couple of days before posting.

Being X directory simply means your number isn't printed or published in the directory.

They can still get your number from various other sources, including your credit file, land registry, electoral register, DVLA, or off any other company you have given your number too.

If you really want to be incognito then you can request that your CLI number is withheld at source from your phone provider, and then everytime you call your number is auto withheld unless you dial 1470 prior to the number your calling which releases it.

Who is your phone provider?

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

You could report them to your service provider as a nuisance call and they should be able to block it for you.

You MUST send the statute barred and harassment letters, otherwise you will never get them to stop.

Once you have advised them that the debt is statute barred, then they are obliged to cease (this according to the FCA and their own industry club, the CSA)

With regard to the telephone harrassment - have a read of post 3 in the link below. You will see that once you have told them that you will NOT discuss anything on the telephone, they leave themselves wide open to a Court Claim for harrassment.

The statute barred letter is below. You could add to the top of the letter (under the account ref) That you do not acknowledge any liability to either XYZ or any company they claim to represent.

Sending either of these letters does not set the SB clock.

At the very least you should send these by recorded delivery.

You should also make a complaint to the FCA and Trading standards about them contacting you at your work place.

Cheers folks, advice gratefully received. Another call at work and one at home today, didn't withhold their number this time. On the plus side, letters drafted, phone provider contacted with a view to changing my number, Bazooka Boo's advice re becoming incognito noted and all numbers they have used so far have been blocked. Just two things:

1. I do not have an account number to add to the SB and telephone harrassment letters as I've shredded previous letters from them. Does this make any difference?

2. I do not answer any suspicious or withheld numbers, I leave them to voicemail both at work and at home. I guess I can delete the section which mentions verbally telling them to stop calling? I don't really want to speak to them if it can be avoided, especially at work.

Edit the letters to suit.

As for the Ref/account numbers I wouldn't worry too much, just tell them it is SB, and that you are seeking legal advice with a view of taking action against them for the criminal offence of harassment.

Also, please please please lodge a formal complaint with Ofcom, regarding the misuse of the communication network, AND to the FCA regarding their (Muckhall) fitness to hold a licence due to their harassment and calls to work, and chasing of SB debts.

  • 2 months later...

That's fantastic news, keep the letter safe in-case it is needed in the future.

nothing ever happens. Either the Financial regulators can't be bothered or are in their pockets somehow.

With the FCA being funded by charging DCA's etc. fees to operate, they are not going to bite the hand that feeds them.

Stigman

NEVER telephone a DCA

If a DCA rings you, refuse to go through the security questions & hang up!
