i would say Mr Ryanair would turn down the bill for the undertakers to bury his granny.

If he can get out of paying something, he will and by making delays, even to legitimate claims, he will save because half of those who qualify will get fed up and go away.

If it helps anyone I have had similar issues with Ryanair whereby they are denying any responsibility for accommodation/food costs whilst awaiting re-routing (2 flight cancellations and no flights made available for several days) because we asked for a flight refund having decided, after 6 days, to make our way back to the UK. Ryanair have also stated they will not enter into any correspondence on their position in this regard (so they can help other customers!!).

I have highlighted this to the Air Users Council 0207 2406061 (9am-14.30 Mon-Thu) who have expressed reservations about Ryanair's stance. You can e-mail them too which saves waiting in the telephone queue on [email protected] with details of your issue and scanned documentary evidence. I'd encourage people with valid complaints to do so as they will soon see patterns emerging and hopefully they can do something to support us against an intransigent airline.

First Post on any website but so disgusted with Ryanair's response to my claim for very moderate expenses after 2 flights were cancelled by them because of volcanic ash I felt I had to get involved. We were left stranded at the airport 94 kms from where we had been staying. We had to re-hire a car to get back to the apartment and spend 4 days awaiting developments. After 2nd flight was cancelled we tried to rebook online but the details we submitted to rebook were constantly rejected as wrong ie 'We cannot retrieve your information please try again'.In desperation we rebooked with Easyjet at a cost of £200 and asked for a refund from Ryanair which was agrred instantly. They could find my details to agree to a refund but not to let me rebook????

Since then a faxed claim was rejected immediately because I had accepted a refund, and an appeal faxed 4 days has had no response as they are obviously sticking to their policy of not entering into any negotiations as we 'no longer have any claim against them' because we accepted a refund and this is according to Reg.EU 261 which they are now using for their own purposes against us.Priceless!I have e-mailed the AUC and had a swift standard response that they will get back to me in 5-6 weeks!

I know one thing from all this and that is Easyjet will take me to Spain from now on.I expect to hear no more from Ryanair. Is it worth any more hassle?

I posted a message on the 21st and apart from a response from Connif the thread seems to have broken about claiming from Ryanair.Has everyone given up?I have sent a new form to them via the address supplied on the Ryanair website which they didn't give before and am waiting for a reply over next few days .The AUC are on the case and if Ryanair they dont respond I will be claiming from my Travel Insurance company AXA.What has happened to other people?

On a similar subject-its been reported in the Guardian today that Aviva are to offer cover for volcanic ash disruption from June.

Single trip costs an extra fiver on top with annual at a tenner.

Hmm, seems they may have thought up another way to add a few pennies to the premium. It's never happened before and how likely is it to happen again. Still, the trouble and pain it caused, it might be worth paying the extra especially for those on an annual policy.

Strange thing is-I did a quick quote and got £28.....I have had one for the same cover for £18-so I guess its worth asking if their base policies arent inflated in the first place.

Insurance companies dont make decisions like this out of the goodness of their hearts-you can bet that its commercially favourable to them.

Had an email asking me to submit my claim for expenses between flight cancellations now so fingers crossed.

Dear Customer

I refer to our recent correspondence regarding your disrupted flight(s).

We now invite you to submit your reasonable expense claim along with the original receipted expenses for hotel accommodation food and transport to/from the airport which were incurred whilst waiting to travel on the next operating Ryanair flight.

To access the form click on the below weblink and complete the Expenses Claim Form online, then print and sign the form and return to the address provided, ensuring that you attach all the original VAT registered receipts to support the claim. On receipt of the required documentation, we will work with our insurance assessment team to process valid reasonable claims.

I had exactly the same e-mail from Ryanair about 3 weeks ago just a few days after they had sent me a confirmation of my flight cancellation so that I could send it to my AXA insurers. They knew I had applied for expenses from the Insurers and would have sent all my documentation to them so they thought it was safe to say I could now claim from them! I couldnot ask for my invoices etc back(they were the originals) so didnot bother with the Ryanair form.AXA (THROUGH M&S Premium club) said that they would pay my claim but as I had kept my expenses very low and as they would only pay out £25 for transport!-2 weeks I had to have a car for- they then deducted 2x£75 excess and awarded me £67! I wish I had gone in a 3 star hotel. What a cheek.AXA said that they were trying to do a little bit for everyone.I would like to know if they paid out to anyone else and how much.Actually I still haven't received this amount from them.

I would be interested Delia 9 to know if you had applied for a confirmation of flight delay or whether they really do intend to pay your expenses. Please keep the forum posted.

I have had an email from Ryanair on Friday it doesn't specify the amount so now i have to wait and see

Dear Mrs Mcdougall,

I acknowledge receipt of your letter, received in our office on the 28th July 2010.

Ryanair sincerely apologise for the cancellation of your recent flight which was caused by the closure of the controlled airspace in Europe following the volcanic eruption in Iceland. As you will be aware this mass disruption was completely outside the control of the airline.

We have received your claim form and wish to confirm that this has been assessed and passed to our Finance Department for payment and a cheque will be posted to you within the next 25 working days in full final settlement of your claim.

Please be advised that non Vat Registered Receipts, alcoholic beverages/parking/prepaid expenses/alternative travel costs are not covered under the EU261/2004 and will not be reimbursed. Expenses not covered under Regulation EU261 should be claimed directly from your travel insurer.

Yours sincerely

For and on behalf of

RYANAIR LIMITED

Good to hear they are actually going to pay out for your expenses at last. Please let the forum know if you get any real money.I sent my claim form 2 weeks after you, having had to ask my insurance company to return all the receipts as their offer of a few pounds was laughable.Ryanair had said 2 months ago that they were now ready to deal with my claim.Anyhow as I said this was nearly 2 months ago and no response at all from them.I sent a letter 3 weeks ago to ask them if they had received my claim form with receipts but have had no reply. As my accomadation was not subject to VAT-a rental through a friend-I dont hold much hope for that to be paid.I heard on You and Yours on Radio 4 that the airlines had almost finished processing all the claims a few weeks back.If I dont hear within the next 2 weeks I am talking to the AUC again and ringing up the consumer program on the radio.

Well an update from me and I'm gobsmacked to say the least.

As my original post, claim submitted and initially turned down. Our claim submitted was for £820, which was for accommodation and drinks as I did not keep food receipts.

Cheque received today for........£820 pounds:!::!:

Maybe because I had no food receipts they thought the total claim was reasonable but I wasn't expecting a good outcome without a fight.

All in all we're still out of pocket with having to find our own way home but it sure as heck softens the blow considerably.

Good luck to the rest of you, hope you don't have long to wait.

Thats great result Denso13.I received the standard e-mail message on the 20th Sept.saying that my claim had been assessed and that it had been forwarded to the Finance Dept for payment in 30 days timeI was also told that my accomodation expenses had been turned down because they were not VAT registered and my car hire without which I would have been stuck in the airport for 2 weeks.I had only asked for £100 for 2 weeks in the rented apartment of a friend and they are not going to pay it because no VAT had to be paid for the rental. That is ridiculous! We could have gone in a 3*hotel and saved on car hire and food (which we have not claimed for). There does not seem to be any common sense or fairness applied in this payout by Ryanair.I am certainly going to appeal against this decision and take it to the AUC if I get no saitisfaction. How can they pay one person £820 and another £37.So bizarre and unjust.I now expect to be offered £140 for 2 weeks stuck in Spain when car hire alone cost me £400.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having camellia45, but as has already been said I think they keep turning people down in the hope they will give up.

Just to clarify on my claim there were 2 couples involved so it worked out at £410 each. The claim was roughly 5 nights at 100 Euros per night and a few small receipts for food and drink (per couple). We couldn't claim for meals for which we had no receipts (almost all) and finding our own way home by bus/ferry/car hire. All in all we are still quite a bit out of pocket but the refund definitely helped as I was convinced we would get nothing.

Hopefully you will not have too long to wait for a good outcome.

That has clarified your payout a bit more Denso13 and I am glad you all got something but not enough as you say.I wish I had kept all the receipts I had from the supermarkets where I bought food although maybe there is no VAT on food in Spain like here?I tried to send a reply e-mail to the one Ryanair sent me but I got an Out of office reply asking me to fax my appeal again. So will do so and keep bothering them.Wonder how other people are doing. You are the only one so far to tell us in this thread.

Well good news for me too. Received a cheque for £548 over the weekend which covers 5 days food and accommodation . I had originally claimed for 6 days plus taxi fares which they haven't paid up for but had valid receipts for. I have had a refund of my return air fare so maybe this is why. Its good to see people are getting somewhere with Ryanair at last. I was beginning to think of giving up myself ! Am glad I didn't and others should continue to pursue their claims

Had a cheque for £104 opened in October as full and final settlement ,that was for 2 weeks stuck in Spain and didn't even pay for the initial 5 day car hire between first and second cancelled flights let alone food and accommodation. So faxed back a long letter and have had an e-mail since saying that they will pay some more but no sum mentioned. The cheque will take 6 weeks to appear. If its less than £300 I will appeal again until I get what I am owed.I still haven't flown with them again and will try not to until they fulfill their legal obligations.Yes you have to pursue your claim because you have the regulations on your side.Really glad for you Delilah9.
