Thanks Tez, I'm glad someone gets me on here!

 

20 cms expected here (SE London) over the weekend. It's all over the news that councils are going to cut gritting by 25%... Well, seeing that they haven't been near my road yet, what's 25% off 0???

 

Of course, the reality is that no-one is ready because councils everywhere cut their budgets where they were least likely to need it year in year out, and snow contingencies are never that high in this country, and trimming more and more each year until the year where we DO need it and ooops, not enough to go round! Well, yeah, that's what usually happens...

 

Can we hope this is going to be a wake-up call for Britain? That we are likely to see more and more of these "extreme" weathers (I use the word extreme loosely by the way, we're not talking of Antarctica conditions here ) and to plan accordingly? Anyone wants to take a bet?

 

That's another thing (Bookie in rant mode this morning, lol): Shops are reporting a massive increase in sales of thermals, gloves, hats, coats etc... Who DOESN'T have a warm coat for winter (I'm talking of the average folks, not homeless etc...) that they have to rush out and buy some urgently once the snow starts falling? We had snow in February, what happened to those supplies you bought then?

 

I have one (two in fact) of those down puffa jackets for mountaineering kind of type, cost me £12 in my charity shop 5 years ago. Yes, it's tatty, the pockets need stitiching... But you know what? I sweat in it if I put a jumper on as well. I went photo taking yesterday just before dusk, with temperatures dropping really quickly and I had to loosen it. Am I going to get rid of it any time soon? Not likely.

 

It's one thing councils running out of salt, but I have to say there seems to be a very British sense of being competely un-ready for whatever the weather throws at this country. People sunburn in summer, and we get hosepipe bans. In winter, we run out of salt and people rush out to buy coats. Trains get stuck in autumn because of falling leaves and people panic buy hayfever tablets in spring... it's all very odd. :-?

 

Ah, it's starting snowing again as I typed this. But it's sunny at the same time. Let's not panic, I'm sure this can be dealt with... I hope... If I don't come back you will know the British weather finally got me!

I remember when.... way back in the early 60s when we were snowed in as kids in our street. That was when the grocer/milkman had their rounds so all us kids would take our sledges to the top of the road and collect our deliveries that way. I seem to remember trains etc running OK. What is it with this country in this high tech age, that it has all gone so badly wrong?? As we live in the country surrounded by fields we don't expect to get any of our roads gritted - we just have to dig the cars out (we have a 200 ft driveway) and drive bloody slowly, using gears instead of brakes - most of the accidents have been caused by drivers not adapting to the conditions - rant over:p (mind you, did nearly slid sideways into our gate yesterday:rolleyes:)

Where I grew up is in the middle of nowhere in the countryside, and I remember one particular winter where we had to go to school (4 older siblings and self) walking nearly 3 kms each way. I am much younger than my siblings and therefore couldn't manage the snow up to my thighs (then!) so the sibs were made to take the sleigh out and pull me to school whilst they walked.

 

Probelm came at the bottom of the last hill which was particularly steep and they were knackered, so told me to get off the sleigh and walk. I, not completely daft, refused to do so and when they threatened to forcibly remove me, I threw my shoes in a snowdrift so they couldn't make me.
