I'm due to move shortly, and was about to redirect my mail using the royal mail's online application.

When they were asking for all sorts of things to identify me though, such as my home tel no, length of time at old address, it begain to ring alarm bells :o

Does anyone here know if they share information with DCS's or financial institutions, or indeed link addresses on CRA files?

Any help appreciated :-)

There's another thread around somewhere that says that royal mail sell these details to interested parties - including CRA etc - they say "to help you". There should be a box somewhere to tick to avoid this.

If you've claimed any benefits at that address and a Gov dept writes to you, the letter will not be redirected, it will be returned to the sender. They can then issue Royal Snail with a request for information and the Snail are obliged to inform them of your new address. That applies to Public Authorities/Gov Depts, but I think it's unlikely to apply to private companies like CRA's etc, but you do have a right to privacy.

BUT...because DWP/CSA are using private owned DCA's to recover debts owed to the Gov, if you have had any dealings with DWP, CSA, Social Fund etc it is not unknown for information to mysteriously leak a little bit here and there.........and once a private DCA gets a whiff of your whereabouts they may decide to alter your CRA file so they can effectively hold you to ransom over any debts which you may, or may not owe, and they probably have no legal right to collect anyway.

HOIST BY THEIR OWN PETARD.

Blimey it works....:-)

Disagree Dannyboy, as mentioned on the 'inside a dca' thread Nectar bought a list from Royal Mail with redirection details. I found out when someone tried ID theft on me. I was catagoricly told by Nectar that they had obtained my details from Royal Mail - (they buy the lists), when someone had placed a redirection to defraud a credit card company in my name. That is a commercial operation and nothing to do with Public bodies. I know DCA's buy into information like this too.

yes they are selling voting registeres.

But there is a box where you can tick to say you want to go on the edited version that does not get sold. I am on that one.

I'm baffled as to what it is you are disagreeing with!!!

Royal Snail have to disclose information about address changes etc to DWP/HMRC etc if they ask for it. That is a legal requirement to help in the prevention and detection of fraud. I know that is a fact because I worked within the CS and those organisations for many years!!!

There is no legal requirement to disclose information to private companies like DCA's etc, and the fact that they (Royal Snail) do sell it was never in doubt - 2grumpy had already stated that in the previous post, and I did say "but I think it's unlikely to apply to private companies like CRA's etc, but you do have a right to privacy."!!

There are many, many ways that DCA's track you down at a new address, but the fact Royal Snail will sell your details on if you fail to tick the privacy box amongst the small print of a redirection form, has made life much easier for them.

HI;......I heard that Councils are selling Voting-Registers!!??!?!? I wonder if it's true !...........W.M.

Yes, the same thing applies.

The short version of the Register goes on public display without too much personal info, but a second version is compiled and sold to interested parties if you don't tick the privacy box indicating that you don't want to be included.

I'll be moving in 6 months or so,.

I have no intentions of having mail redirected, ever.

Or ever being on the electoral roll. (no point in voting in the UK, as they're all out to screw us anyway.)

I'll be keeping my new address as private as I can.

Any DCA letters get ignored, anyone comes to the door, I'll say nobody of that name lives here, etc.

I'm sick of living in what's rapidly becoming a Police State where your details can be had by anyone, for anything, for the right price.

No wonder there is so much ID theft in the UK. They say, "CCTV and sharing information is for our own good. If you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear."

Wrong!!! We have everything to fear, and so many times on here and in the media we see examples of why we should make a stand for our rights of privacy.

We aren't safe even then. Everytime you make an electronic transaction, anywhere, it's tracked. The government are making it harder for anyone to use cash and limit their traces

George Orwell was right then. Just a few years late with his prediction.

I'm not giving up though. Anything I can do to make it difficult for them to keep tabs on me and I'll do it.

Most of what DCA's spout is rubbish anyway. Challenge them and they soon go quiet. They just go after the easy targets and soon run when you throw a few spanners in the works. So spread the word about the CAG and places like it, and debt collection will no longer be the profitable industry it is at the moment. Then hopefully they'll go and earn an honest days pay like the rest of us.

Dont worry.

Share what we all know as individuals, and collectively, then we are a force that can send the DCA **** running for cover. :D

Hey no worries!! That was just a very small, minor misunderstanding. I've done it myself several times ;-)

No wonder there is so much ID theft in the UK. They say, "CCTV and sharing information is for our own good. If you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to fear." yeah rite. computer hacking, companys losing data, companys putting out in general rubbish the private info. Like that helps us.

Wrong!!! We have everything to fear, and so many times on here and in the media we see examples of why we should make a stand for our rights of privacy.

We are having mail re-directed to a new address and Lowells have mysteriously got hold of it within a couple of months

Same here. Lowells got mine too. I assumed it was because of credit check burea info where existing creditors will inform them of a move. I did not inform my debtors cause they were going to knock on my door and the man who now lives where I did, has never heard of me. I still answer all mail forwarding from DCA's though and keep up DMP. So, in conclusion, would anyone say they can get mail forwarding address without breaching the data protection act? I did tick the box saying, tell no one, so to speak. Can you have mail forwarding, to a P O Box or one of those commercial private type boxes or do the P Office forbid it?
