One of the lads that works for me has come in this morning and is a bit concerned as a baliff has apparently turned up at his old house, chasing a debt of £409 he supposedly owes to Doncaster council. His former step dad still lives at this address so has passed the letter the baliffs left onto him, but has not given the baliffs his new address.

What should he be doing about this supposed debt that he knows nothing about? Does he contact the baliff or can he go to the council to find out more?

It's for a "Penalty Charge", so I'm guessing a council-issued parking ticket or some other sort of traffic offence (PCN - Penalty Charge Notice). Does he remember getting a PCN?  Or any letters about being taken to court for unpaid parking/traffic offence fines? Presumably they would have been sent to his old house if that was the address of the Registered Keeper in the car's log book/registration document [V5C]

Has he updated his Registered Keeper details in his V5C to show his current address?

A good friend of mine keeps having this happen to him, thinks it's smart to keep the car registered at his cousin's address. The problem is it always comes back to bite him, he's terrible at driving in bus lanes for some reason :) .

Two possible consequences for your step dad, from the bailiffs.

1. They tow his car and charge a fortune to get it back plus the fine

2. If the car is on finance they won't tow it but they will clamp it and charge an extortionate fee to release plus the fine

Three good steps to take to resolve the problem.

1. Ring the Council, he may be able to appeal and if he wins just pay the original fine, or pay in instalments

2. Park the car far away from his current property

3. Update the DVLA details V5

  • dx100uk changed the title to Baliff chasing unknown PCN council debt

if the PCN in the post was not sent to the address as on the cars V5C

he should fill out the relevant forms below.

please don't hit Quote...just type we know what we said earlier..

DCA's view debtors as suckers, marks and mugs

NO DCA has ANY legal powers whatsoever on ANY debt no matter what it's Type

and they

are NOT and can NEVER  be BAILIFFS. even if a debt has been to court..

If everyone stopped blindly paying DCA's Tomorrow, their industry would collapse overnight...
