Please forgive me in advance if this post seems long and confusing but I'm in a bit of a Pickle. Back in April I bought a car with no tax but full MOT, the guy I bought it off said that on the day he'd lost the V5, even though he'd advertised the car for sale with this information included. (He'd recently moved and it had got caught up in the paperwork) He'd promised to send the information to me by post if he found it, in the meanwhile we applied to the DVLA for the new Log book to the car.

Straight away after getting the car home we phoned the police to notify them that the car was sitting outside our house, but not used on the road, as we planned to sell it on once we had the log book. We then phoned the DVLA and done the same thing, notified them that the vehicle was there untaxed but MOT'D and insured (as we have traders insurance because we buy and sell cars) Everything was fine.

Ok, so here's where things get interesting. It's now July, and today i got a knock on the door. When i answered it i come face to face with a man i'd never seen before, asking about the car. It turns out the car used to belong to this man (in his words) and the car itself had been sold for scrap. He told me that the DVLA had been in contact with him, telling him that the car had been abandoned, in my street, and giving this man (a total stranger) My address, even though the car is not yet registered to us. So he took it upon himself to come see it and us in person to warn us that they were threatening to clamp it.

I then went and contacted the guy i bought the car off, who told me he had no idea it was sold for scrap. I contacted the DVLA They told me it hadn't had any history of scrap notified to them.

So my question is. Should i be weary of this man? When he was told we would go and question the DVLA who still hadn't sent out the log book to us, he started to panic and said there really wasn't anything to worry about so there was no need. Uh... hello? You just said they'd been sending you threatening letters because it had supposedly been abandoned.

Furthermore, the car has passed through five different hands before reaching me from the sounds of things. Now im in a pickle because i don't understand how this man got my address, I have PTSD so im in hell of a state over it all, because i frankly do not answer the door, but today i had to. Is this something the DVLA would do? Shouldn't the DVLA deal with this stuff themselves? No notice has been put on the car, i have no word to go on other than this mans. I asked him for the letters he'd been getting with regards to the car and he told me he didn't have them on him.

Can someone help please :/ I'm on the phone to the DVLA again in the morning. AGAIN.

I forgot to add. He said he was interested in having the car back now that it was running with an MOT! the car apparently was sold to scrap because it was giving him problems. When i told him he could gladly have it back for the money i put into it. Which isn't all that much. £250 he turned his nose in the air at me and grumbled. I'm pretty sure he thought he could just come and take the car away today. It's all a little odd.

littlejanedoe,

Hi and welcome to CAG.

I suspect the "person" who knocked on your door was a "scrap dealer" and trying to get you to "give" him the car for free.

Did you ask to see an ID card ?? All ways do this. .....

Did you get the number plate of the vehicle he was driving ??

If so report it to the Police

I didn't get the number of his vehicle as i find the street very intimidating. Since before this year i was completely house bound for near enough eight years. I'm only 24 so as you can imagine, it's a long time in my life. He did give me a card. because my first question was "Who the hell are you?!" LOL The card is for a car business. It says they are specialists in desirable, new and pre owned vehicles.

Thankyou for the welcome and, thankyou for replying to my post. I'm very worried and very upset. He actually traveled over 50 miles to see this car today. He wasn't trying to pressure me into getting rid of it, but i think the big white german shepherd which was standing behind the glass door behind me put him off a little bit.

He has told you a "story" (Pack of lies).

The "man" drove down your road, saw a vehicle with no TAX and knocked on your door.

A "Con man". Don't open the door to him again.

Keep the "Big Dog" by your side when you get a knock.

Trust me. They don't like dogs !!!!

Don't be upset. .... He's gone and I don't think will come back.

I really hope that is true. The problem is now I've had all sorts of mild panic attacks tonight thinking about the fact that the DVLA is giving my address to random strangers. I thought, if they had a problem with the vehicle they would have come and taken a look at it themselves. even though i've been in touch with them over and over again with regards to it. I'm an honest person. I contacted the police and the DVLA straight away. I have nothing to hide with regards to the cars i help buy. As for this one well. I don't know whether it's stolen, (my father said something about it perhaps being a split? two cars put together as one.) I don't know. But i've told him i want it checked out. Either way, it's very likely my family, or whoever i could have sold this car to, i could have been putting their lives at risk if this car isn't safe, and i was none the wiser.

It's gone through several dealers hands by the looks of things, and in the process i wouldn't be at all surprised if someone has given a garage a backhander to put an MOT on it. Nonetheless, the car is clean and well kept overall it's a rover 75 so as you can imagine it's quite a nice car. Quite the looker too. Is it even legal for the dvla to give this information out to the general public? Is this even something they would do? I'll be phoning the man tomorrow and i'll be asking him for these letters. My father luckily, is no push over. He will want to see them. He will also be down there applying for a new log book AGAIN in the morning. That's without contacting the police and the company who is contacting this man telling him the car is abandoned.

The big dog always stays at my side lol. He goes everywhere with me, he is the reason i can step outside the door today. Thankyou though, for your time, and effort in trying to help me. I should probably be getting rest but i can't lol! I'm too busy trying to work this mystery out!

Nothing to "panic" about or get stressed.

No one "gave" your name or address out. ...

A "Con man"

The "Big Dog" looked after you today ! Keep it that way. .... Give the dog a "treat" from me.

I will do :] He will be more than happy with his dosage of rich tea biscuits (because none is allowed to have them without him or they get dirty looks) Thank you again. It's such a relief. I will still get everyone contacted tomorrow. I will also contact the company on the card he gave me and complain. I'm going to actually head off to bed now and hopefully sleep this time. G'night and sweet dreams!

This sounds very odd. I think the person who sold you the car is up to something. I think it is possible that they sold you the car, but never had any intention to provide you with the log book. Perhaps they never owned the car in the first place ? Is the car actually registered to someone other than the person you think sold you the car.

I think it may be worth phoning DVLA to see what they say about the ownership of the car. Do they have Mr X of X address noted as the previous owner of the car ?

We could do with some help from you.

I am well aware that if the car is parked on the road it can be clamped and then towed away. Hence why every effort was made to inform the police and the DVLA in the first place. It is actually parked on the sidewalk outside my garage which i bought along with the house a few years back. So it is not. on the road.

Arrangements have been made for the car to be moved to a local garage for a few weeks until the dvla sorts out my application for the log book. AGAIN. Until then i'll do my best to find out what is exactly happening with this car. I've contacted the guy who turned up on my door, and told him i want copies of the letters which were sent to him, containing my address. He's agreed to send them to me via email but as of yet i have received nothing.

I'll be checking the cars Chassis number and phoning the DVLA again in the morning to confirm the car is not stolen. Written off. Abandoned. or been involved in any major criminal activity. It's very likely at this moment in time i will be scrapping the car personally, and making sure the car is actually scrapped this time so it can cause no further problems for any potential buyers in the future.

I cannot get a big fine with regards to the car, because the car is not registered to me. The guy who is the registered keeper will be the one who receives the fine for not handling all of this correctly. He should have made sure this car didn't get into the wrong hands, and if a certificate of destruction was given when he "sent" off the log book, I really want to know how and why this car has ended up back in circulation. I don't have a drive. As i stated above. I live in a terrace. I have a double garage but no front garden to my house. You open the door and you walk straight onto the sidewalk.

...Back in April I bought a car with no tax but full MOT..

If you bought the car back in april, you should have received the V5 by now.

I cannot get a big fine with regards to the car, because the car is not registered to me.

But you WILL lose the car if it's spotted by a DVLA/Police ANPR van. They don't care that you have notified them that you can't tax it. They only care that it is on the public highway without displaying a valid tax disc.

...I have a double garage...

If you have a double garage, park it in there. If your garage is full, why buy a car that you know you cant store off road until it's taxed ?

I HAVE already said. I sent the required information off for the log book. But it's obviously been lost in the post. Because when we checked we were told the DVLA hasn't received a thing. It wasn't initially a problem as we had lease of a friends drive for the car until their family come down from Scotland, who is now parked on said drive. I KNOW i will loose the car if it is SPOTTED by the dvla. I've been visited by the police and we've talked about it, and the police man told me himself, it was fine where it was as long as it stayed in-front of my drive.

I honestly give up now. READ WHAT I WROTE. I was told the cars V5 was present when i won the car. so i thought i could tax the car straight away when i turned up to collect it. but when i showed up, the guy told me it must have been lost during his move and he'd find it amongst his paperwork. IF you also read what i said. We buy cars, improve them, and then sell them on. HENCE the extra car. Paying for tax isn't a problem as i already own six cars. all taxed mot'd and insured. THE garage is full with a volvo T5 that wont be put on the road anytime soon. The rest of the garage has motorbikes in. along with a vast majority of tools ect.

If they take the car between NOW and tomorrow when i move it. Then so be it. Then i don't have to deal with any of this any longer. It's no big loss to me. This wasn't what is concerning me, it's the man who showed up at my door WITH MY ADDRESS.

You may as well forget about this thread now, because I feel like im being attacked over something that was innocent enough. I wanted advice. Not issues. Not scrutinizing. Not to be accused of doing something unlawful when I've done NOTHING WRONG. Other than buying the piece of junk to begin with and trusting this man in good face to post the log book to me.

Well you did post Help!!!! Help!!!! I'm so confused. Replying when you are probably tired is not helping.

Anyway it does sound like you have the situation under control. You say that you buy and sell cars regularly. Begs the question, as to why you buy a car without seeing the log book, as I thought that is normally very important.

We could do with some help from you.
