Hi everyone,

I received a bill from EON today for electricity usage between the period of 2010 and 2011. The address on the bill is for a flat I used to rent so I am assuming the letting company have passed on my details to EON. The problem is I never signed up with EON, in fact the bill that just arrived in the post was the first time they have ever contacted me. I was responsible for three bills whilst renting the flat, council tax, water and electricity, I made sure all three accounts were settled before I left so I am a bit confused now and don’t really know what to do. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks

H

Pick up the phone and find out exactly whats gone on, if your not getting answer from customer service ask to speak to a supervisor.

Will do.

did you keep final meter readings

I shredded it at the start of the year, never thought I would need it again.

Who did you settle your electricity with?

It was a company called Green Energy.

Hi, got an update from EON.

I sent them an email with questions about the account, I asked for the following details:

Date and method used to setup the account

Name of the person who setup the account (either me or my flatmate)

Details of the tariff we chose

Here is the reply I got, I have blanked out the date and the name of the letting company.

1)

The account was set up and closed for the period between ** ******* 2010 and the ** **** 2011.

2)

We were contacted in April 2013 to open an account for you.

3)

We were given your details and tenancy dates along with the meter readings for your time at the property by *** *** Lets.

Not been at home so haven't had time to call them but I will do after the bank holiday. I have received another bill from EON whilst I was away, it seems like the initial bill was an estimate whereas the latest bill is an accurate reading but it's gone up by another £300.

The total bill is over a £1000 which is something I find ridiculous, I am paying a similar figure in 2013 for gas and electricity to power a four bed house whereas the flat I was renting was a two bed that was used for 4 days a week over 8 months.

Hi hboss

Sorry for the late reply. Only just noticed this thread.

We often have situations where we're informed about changes of responsibility at a property long after the actual change. This can result in energy bills being raised after tenants have moved on. However, as you've been paying another provider, this is more unusual.

On the bill we've sent, are the address details correct? Do they match the address details on the bills already paid to Green Energy?

I do understand you're no longer at the property, but did you keep any meter details? I'm thinking specifically about the serial number. If you have the details, are the serial numbers the same on both our bill and those from Green Energy?

With flats, it's possible that meter details can be mixed up. Sometimes, the wrong meter serial numbers are assigned to properties. This is particularly common with new builds. It's possible the builder/agent has passed us the wrong metering details when the development was signed off. Was the flat part of a new development?

Even if not a new build, this can still happen. It's known as a crossed meter. I'm not saying this is definitely the case, just a possibility. If it is, we've a specialist team who deal with these issues and they're the ones to deal with. They sort out the mix up and make sure the right meter is attached to the right property and billed accordingly.

Sorry for all the questions but trying to establish what might have happened here.

Hi Malc,

Yes the address is correct on the statement, the only mistake was in the name but I don't think that matters.

I had to fill out a checking out sheet when I moved out and that had the serial number and meter readings but I have shredded it, I think the letting company will have a copy so I might be able to get hold of another copy.

Yes it was new build flat, the entire building was owned by one letting company which is why we had no choice of energy supplier. When we signed the tenancy agreement we had to sign a contract with Green Energy which stated the energy plan and rates, it wasn't the most competitive rate but we had no other choice.

The bill that arrived last month was the first time I have any sort of communication from EON, during my stay at the flat we never received any phone calls or letters from EON which is why it was bit of a surprise to see the bill.

Thanks

H
