Hi there - how's it going? It sounds like you are in a corner with this thing. Can you have a look through the web - I'm pretty sure there's a site that you can type in your postcode and it will tell you who your supplier is for the area. Then you can ring them and say you are the tenant and you are unable to afford the rate they are charging - they will then look up your details and might say things that will enlighten you - e..g. oh, this is a managed account by the landlord and is held in his name and we therefore can't discuss it with you. So, then you'll know the 'set-up'. You then tell them that as your manager of the account seems to be altering it can you tell you if this is to allow for price adjustments that he/she has been notified about?? This will at least be a way of getting the ball rolling. No-one should be in a position where they are unable to access their human rights! that is written in stone - well LAW actually and I am worried that you feel you cannot challenge or even query what is, after all, something that you pay for. Sorry, am I nagging you:) chin up and think about it if you need to. what about trying CAB but ask them to keep you out of it.??

Just a note, its illegal to tamper with a meter and criminal charges sometimes are possible. Good luck there.

ARGH COMPLAINTS!!!

HIya

I have a prepay metre and i must be completely alone in this but i love it!!

It was in the house when we moved and i hated the idea of it but i was told that once we were in it could be changed, when we were in that changed to no you have to have it for 12 months grrrrr!!!

For the first 2 weeks it was a nightmare and it was eating £10 a day with most things off and i was really really worried that it was going to cost me a fortune.

It was a new house so we had no idea what was eating it all but all of the appliancies were from the old house so we knew it was either the metre or something in the house before we moved ie heating.

i called Eon who were lovely despite me being horrible to them!! she told me to flick a switch which turns off the electric supply, i did that and then we checked if the numbers on the metre were moving..they werent and the rates were correct so it wasnt the metre. We have ground source heating which is low cost so it wasnt that...we had no idea what to do next. Luckily whilst frantically searching the house for the problem i found a switch at the back of a cupboard...water heater!!! we switched it off as we have a water heater built in the the ground source so the old one isnt needed and hey presto £3 a day now and thats with me and the kids in and out most of the day too....i wash the clothes at least once a day althoug i do try to do that at night and we all have baths at least once a day too so we are using at least as much as the average home...we only have electric too, no gas, so im really really happy with £3 a day!!

If you are using loads id start by looking at anything that heats water first...they are the real money burners!! Washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters...are you heating water all day when you are at work...why? tvs etc dont use much so dont do what we did and panic ... we switched everything off and i was obsessed with checking how much we were using..i ahrdly look now!!

I think prepayment is great. Yes there is a 50p a day standing charge (def 50p per day...ive checked) and i dont like that but i dont have to worry about big bills every month now which is one less worry...i always call and check my rates are correct every couple of months too..i watch watchdog and dont want a bill if they turn out not to be.

If prepayment really isnt working for you then try and change it but make sure it isnt going to be as high on a normal bill...maybe its that you just dont notice as much if you dont watch the money go down??

Hello,

I own a studio flat ( Combined Livingroom & Bedroom ). It's now in the middle of the coldest weeks for 2009 & early 2010. After having to provide the ' H ' reading from my Key-Meter to the E-ON operator via telephone, I am spending twenty-five pounds a week. E-On blames a 1983 electric wall heater on this issue, when the estate I live on was built. After advice from an independent body, the problem is a combination of binning E-ON and upgrading the heater.

After a series of comparison checks with various sites, EDF and British Gas are the ' Cheapest ' for the Essex County.:-)

Still looking for work, I have just found out that EDF also has a very low tarriff available for people unemployed. There is no SWALEC energy provider for my region  My high-level advice from the internet and friends who had been with E-ON in the past, is to bin these high-tariff jokers and go with EDF asap. Unfortunately, I have been informed E-ON will not release my file details for six to eight weeks, so E-ON can squeeze the last few drops out from their upset customers  The weeks which are the coldest the most. Nice Company  It's a long road for fairness between companies and customers :grin: The statutory cooling off window i.e. your personal information has to be sent through several agencies to get your account set up correctly. Why 6 to 8 weeks ?? Makes no sense at all, i'm loosing money each week here.

Reason I converted to a key meter is because I have full control over how much electricity I use. Had too many bill shocks in the past and was not working for me. Things have moved on since I joined EON in 2002. Time to bin them as other companies offer better deals. Am not one for throwing money away. I found out over the phone with someone that a lady paying around twenty-five pounds a month for one bedroomed flat. I am paying hundred and one pounds a month for a combined livingroom-bedroom studio appartment. What's wrong with this picture ? EON making fun of me, me thinks !!!

Hi - I agree with you - EON are rubbish. My key meter is now taking around £50 per week off us and the company say they will not take the meter out even if we are up to date.

It took EON 8 months to register the meter - they made all sorts of mistakes with the billing etc and I believe there is rule about this. I will investigate further as I'm pretty sure that if a company fails to collect monies owed on a meter within a time frame of six months then they are not allowed to add it later. So a year down the line we have only just started paying anything towards arrears - do you see how this now makes us in debt for longer and if the price goes up in real time I have then been charged the higher rate when I should have been paying off arrears at a different rate. Had this conversation with them and they say Oh its not the rate its say £10 per week in money - yeah ok - so how do they do that then when the type of meter I have only allows one rate! Im making a complaint of course and will take it as high up as I can.:evil:

I have never had an arrears payment problem, but can tell you I was advised by sources to pay via a pre-payment meter to keep an eye on suspicious high quarterly bills I used to recieve from EON.

I have had a thorough home appliance check with an independent consumption firm over the telephone a long time ago. Firstly, I am in the process of removing EON completely out of the equation, then I will re-evaluate my financial situation - if my 1983 heater is the cause, but doubt it !!! I will soon find out what's going on. Just a matter of time.

Hello all,

Currently E-ON Electricity Meters have a high standing charge added and at present, EDF and British Gas do better deals. EDF are currently doing a special deal to new customers - A 2.5 percent cheaper rate than EON's Pre-pay meter tarriff, also taking into account that without the 2.5 percent reduction, EDF and British Gas are still a lot cheaper anyway. :D

guys i think you on the wron tarrifs

i have 2 pc's running lets say in total 12 hours each per day

the 40 inch TV is on 24 7 with broadband router sky

yes 24 -7 as i suffer from insomnia and flat mate works sleeps different times to me

the usual kitchen fridge freezer appliances and during summer would say electric use is 59p a day

winder with decorations and house lights on longer its near on one pound a day

yes a 10pound topup lasts over a week near on 2 in summer

speak to supplier for tarrif deals

its the same for my parents and neighbours who we all are on edf 10 a week at most

try getting edf you will see the benefits then

one thing i noticed by putting key in it auto deducts 50p here or when on emergency it takes off some from available credit so what i do is top up 30 a time which lasts over a month and i just top up before it hits emergency so it never takes anything off of available credit

the guys using 80 a week are being ripped off these pre pay are suppose to be budget meters with tarrifs for the low income. i think some sales guy shown you savings one tarrif would give or a average saving the key meters give but put you onto a suckers tarrif

never ever go on a tarrif a door seller suggests after all he gets paid some how and that how is by you going on a premium tarriff

edf is the answer

Hi im a single male in a one bedroom flat all on one level im with e.on electricity on a prepayment meter with no debt my standing charge is 30.35 per/day on the E.ON energy plan with prepayment. My first unit rate has now just gone up to 13.22 p/kwh and im using anything from £1.10 to £1.50 per day.The increase came by way of a letter explaining my new energy prices,my gas supply is on a card meter with british gas and theres no standing charge with this set up for gas.Im very careful with the electric and do most times switch the sockets of or at least set appliances onto energy save mode. When i first had the prepayment meter i had some debt and obviously they take that first it was a nightmare but once id paid up its been ok but im on my own so not to bad.

Hi Colin

Sounds like you might benefit from having a chat with our Energy Efficiency team. They specialise in helping people reduce their usage. Give them a list of your appliances and they'll be happy to advise of ways you may be able to cut back.

Ask for a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of useful info to help you save.

Check out our website, too; particularly the Interactive House and Energy Menu. More good tips here.

Hope this is useful Colin. Give me a shout if you need any more info/advice as will be happy to help.

Malc
