Just been experimenting again. I went on Fredericksons site, then Ebay, Amazon, and Youtube, then CAG.

Checked the Fredericksons cookie, but only the CAG forum appeared with a link to the forum thread I visited. It looks like they have it set up, so they only track visits to certain sites.

Then they have no excuse whatsoever that definitely IS illegal & it's clear they are targeting litigants who use this site for advice.

Whereas we can't ID members they can if they include the info they have together with the scant details given here

We live in an unmoderated country why should the net be any different?

Bring back free speech we miss it!

Well I've just messed up Internet Explorer good and proper. One of the add on things has messed up and stops IE from loading, tried uninstallling IE 8 and now IE7 won't load either. :D

So now on dual boot setup with Ubuntu Linux and browsing with Firefox browser.

No more Windows and Microsoft for me. This afternoon has made me realise I'm better off without them. :D

I'm now officially a Linux geek who lives in a world of free open source operating systems and software. Best of all, it works properly too. :D

I think this will answer your question.

Sort of adult-ish content with extra crumbs. Click the link at your own risk.

You may get tracked by a gingerbread cookie. :D:D:D

Their statement forms part of the 'terms you agree to' when visiting their site...if they breach the terms that are agreed between you, then you have a clear reason for having any information collected by that breach deemed inadmissible if you require...sort of thing...

Seriously, did anyone read what I wrote earlier in the thread. They are doing NOTHING wrong, illegal or immoral (for once - can't believe I am defending a DCA here:shock:)! They are simply tracking the referals from websites like billions of other websites do.

My concern is that misleading threads like this will potentially scare already worried and vunerable people and stop them using CAG.

If you would like me to expand more than I did in post #8 then please ask so peoples minds are put at rest. My knowledge of law is pants but I do know quite a bit about internet marketing.

If you do not want DCA's to know that there are threads about them then don't put links to their sites in your thread and if you see one in another thread don't click on it, enter the address directly into your browser.

So any information they collect on the site about a CAG user would be inadmissable in court as evidence then Spicey? Also to you FunkyFox. Good that there is agreement that everything is above board and no cause for concern.

FF I do know the law & if they are effectively spying on litigants who are in dispute with them or their clients they ARE breaking the law. As I said where we can't ID members they probably can

I've been on Frederickson International's webite today. As I take precautions when it comes to my personal data online, I was amazed to find that they had left a tracking cookie on my computer.

This is where I got a huge shock.....

I found Frederickson's cookie on my PC.

The file was called [email protected][2].txt

and the file contained the following information....

So yes they do spy on us.

So if you ever visit a DCA site. delete the cookies before coming on CAG. You can see from the contents of the cookie file that they can find out what CAG threads you visit afterwards, and possibly identify you.

They placed this info on my computer and I deleted it, so if I go back there, they won't pick up the info on what CAG threads I've been on.

I have also discovered that Cabot, Moorcroft, and Bryan Carters site all leave cookies that track you.

I can honestly say that i aint worried 1 bit FB....as they are still entitled to no money whatsoever without going to a county court first :)

NOTHING they collect unables them to identify an individual user of CAG or any other website for that matter, simply the source of where that person has been refered from. If its google it will tell them google, if its a link in a CAG thread then it will tell them that too. It does NOT identify the individual user of CAG, ever.

In one of the retail websites I ran it was a very useful way of identifying threads on forums where people were complaining/talking about the site as it would usually result in a traffic spike on that day and you could then see the source of the spike and visit the thread. I could not identify who had visited, only from where.

In the cookie code that fuzzy posted it mentions at the start fuzzy@ . This may be the reason for people thinking it has indentified the CAG user. This is infact the users computer name (as it says fuzzy not fuzzybobble) and only for storing the cookie on the users computer. It is not seen or stored by the server.

As you know the law you will be well aware of the dangers of defamation online (especially in forums) so perhaps some caution should be urged with the accusations of spying. However if we choose not to I wish you all the best with your 'case'.

The link below shows what the website you visited see as a result of your refered visit. I thought it might hlep put a few minds at rest. Also remember the data isnt even going to the DCA its going to google who then allow it to be displayed in the format shown.

To be honest it does not take a genious to track down a post on CAG if it was there simply by the amount given and the advice asked.

Why bother with cookies when you can simply see pounds and pence on a forum?

A guest can view threads on here as it is all open to view apart from Admin threads and site team threads or template letters.

Unless a cookie is placed with some other software, I don't see why the tracking the cookie provides could be deemed unlawful - the internet operates the way it does by, among other things, using cookies to 'personalise' a user's experience...

For the same reason, the cookie identifies the machine and browser, not the user, and if you clicked on a link to DCA website from another consumer forum, the machine would still be identified, not the user name (presuming the user name on the other forum was different...) - if you don't believe me, check to see if there are links to Frederickson's on, say, Penalty Charges, and click the link and view the cookies.

If the DCAs really wanted to see what was going on, and who was complaining, it would be far simpler to search on CAG by username, and narrow the search to any posts containing Fredericksons or their clients...that would give them far more information than any cookie could ever hope to do...

That said, it is important that the data they do collect is not used unlawfully...that is a completely different argument to the 'spying' one put forward when discussing cookies.
