You might want to:

A) Download the latest version of the whole application

B) Uninstall the current install from your PC

C) Re-Boot

D) Install New Version

A hassle, but should clear any file missing issues you are having

Veester.

p.s. Make sure you have your valid key to hand before this process, otherwise you won't be able to re-install.

Hope that helps.

There is a virus/trojan going around which attacks AVG, removes part of it from your system and tells you to upload a windows program, this 'windows program is something like 'Avger2009' and corrupts your system, puts loads of tracking cookies on and disables system restore.

Unfortunately it's still fairly new and Windows Security Manager is unfortunately one of its targets.

I've just removed this and reinstalled AVG antivirus on two PCs this morning....

Easiest way to get rid of this virus is to go into your cookies area, delete all the cookies and then reboot.

DON'T go into any software which needs your bank details as this is designed to grab them and cause havoc.... I had a warning from an IT friend on this that it is a nasty bit of work and is very invasive and intrusive.

You will need to reload AVG from scratch after you've got rid of the cookies. There isn't a proper way of getting rid of this yet but this is the best way so far.

Just deletd cookies etc, and ran the update. All seems to be well again.

Hi Sillygirl1. Do you know the name of this virus. Yesterday my sister sent me an email which had a trojan in a link. She had clicked the link but I don't think she has a virus checker that runs in the background. She didn't report any problems so it may just be that m virus checker (Avast) is being over cautious.

I think the email was titled How to hypnotise a man and the link (from memory) was *http://viii.us/hypno* (DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LINK) So just watch out if you get that. If it comes from one of your freinds they may not be aware that it contains a virus.

I don't think its been named yet, only really started hitting PCs about 7am this morning, I expect it will have a name soon - I think the "AVG virus" is a good name as it attacks that on any PC. Some geeky person with too much time on their hands has been busy over the school holidays....

This virus attacks AVG and puts cookies into your internet browser which then tries to run video clips and takes you to 'fake' websites.

As I said, don't do any banking transactions until you have checked your machine is clear.

ok, I sorted this problem when I read page 4 of the thread. I have NO VIRUS, i never had a virus, just an annoyance from AVG. I was going to post without researching the topic, then I did and couldn't do the quick fix. I re read on the thread and sorted it. My puter is all nicely protected, awwwwwwwwwww:D

The only trouble I've had with AVG 8.0 *which will be dropped soon as the trial period ends; used to be free etc* is the internet/webshield ... it slows things down, end up turning it off half the time. But it has prevented a few other things, which is good.

Actually ... can add this now ... but was already present with the old AVG for some reason ... 'connection to update server failed'. :D
