I'm just wondering why it is considered bad form to point out spelling/grammar errors.

On various threads on various subforums of the CAG, users have put letters of complaint etc. onto a thread, to see if experts think it is good enough to send to the company in question. Sometimes, these letters have been riddled with spelling and grammar errors, apparently unnoticed by the poster; but on most occasions, the users who have replied have not commented on it. Surely it would help the poster to eliminate these simple errors? Their letter will come across much better to the company if it is spelt and punctuated properly. Therefore I conclude that deliberately not pointing out obvious spelling mistakes can sometimes be a hindrance to the person who has made those mistakes.

Dear Tom87

I am not sure why you have posted. Your post has nothing to do with the subject matter and the last message was left mid-April, ages ago! As a teacher of English, I also wince at some of the errors I see but criticising others simply makes you appear to be a pompous ass. Sad to say - it is true that the recipients of letters riddled with errors may be just as English-oblivious as the writers. Unfortunately, the last sentence of your post is extremely bad grammar.

Being a stickler for spelling and grammar doesn't make you a better person - in fact, it could even make you a troll!!!

Stick to the subject in future, nobody likes a know it all!!

If you look through the other 50+ posts I have made, you will see that I am not a troll. Just yesterday I made a suggestion that trolls be more harshly dealt with.

I do not see myself as a better person due to being keen on using correct spelling and grammar. I neither stated nor implied that. Additionally, I stated that it is not important on a forum - just as long as the errors go away if it is followed up in an official capacity.

I was asking why people's bad grammar/spelling is not corrected when they pubish a potential letter, as it may prove detrimental to them if their errors remain. It would only be the friendly and helpful thing to inform them of the spelling/grammar mistakes before sending off their letter, as it will read better with the company to whom they are complaining, and a satisfactory outcome is more likely to be reached.

It was your repeated correction of other users' spelling mistakes and their subsequent criticism of you which led me to think of writing my above post. I have not corrected anyone else's spelling or grammar, but you have - yet you are the one saying correcting it makes you appear a "pompous ass" - well according to your definition, that makes you one, as you are the one who has been correcting other users' spelling and grammar.

You are telling me not to be a know-it-all, yet you are the one instructing me what to do and correcting my grammar. This is completely hypocritical and makes you a know-it-all, not me.

Anyway, I shall now move on to being constructive again and making some comments in other threads that will hopefully help people.

Blimey, Tom, you HAVE been busy! Only joined in April and posted over 60 times already. Please tell me what relevance your posts on here have got to do with Excel parking?

You see here, you have made a spelling mistake, thus:

"I was asking why people's bad grammar/spelling is not corrected when they pubish a potential letter, as it may prove detrimental to them if their errors remain."

Nobody's perfect, not me, not you. What do you mean, my REPEATED criticisms? Rubbish.

People do NOT find this kind of criticism helpful! Especially when they are being harassed, as I am, by Private Parking Companies. You really should go and help those who actually ask you to.

I still think you are a TROLL and if I am a hypocrite, then so be it, no harm in that.

What are you hoping to achieve by slating each other?

A feeling of one-upmanship?

It impresses nobody!

If you cannot post without having a pop at each other then I will start moderating posts.

If anyone is called a troll, then I suggest that they look very carefully at what they post and the manner in which they post.

If you give the impression........then someone will take it.

Correcting a template isn't the problem............. The problem is openly telling the writer they are wrong ............. It's not only bad manners but if the writer suffers from dyslexia then it may also be discrimination.

Whatever it is it's embarrassing for the writer & discourages them from posting their problems

If I correct someones template I pm them to tell them why............I do not broadcast their mistakes all over their thread

True, if it happens to you frequently. But it's worth bearing in mind that some trolls go around calling countless other people trolls just for their own cheap amusement and for no reason; as well as to create a diversion from the fact that they themselves are the trolls - this does not make the random victims of their tirades trolls themselves.

JonCris - finally a simple and hassle-free answer to my question! Thank you! I now understand the reasons why and am grateful for your explanation which, in hindsight, makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Help, I am one of these people who have received a PCN from Civil Enforcement for parking in a Co Op car park. I saw no notices and I received a letter saying you got 2 hours free there were no machine to pay and I had overstayed that. I googled and found this site so I ignored the letter. I have now received letter No3 from Newlyn PLc (it is now £165). Each letter makes me panic a little and this one a bit more as it seems to be a proper Baliff. I know it is silly to panic and I really cant afford to pay so I just need reassurance that I am doing the right thing and if you could tell me what you think will be their next approach. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Carry on ignoring. [problem] relies on you chickening out about now - more money for them.

A 'proper bailiff' would have a court order in his hand. You just have another powerless debt collection letter.

More to the point, have you written to express your disgust to the Co-op? Send them you threatening junkmail and asks how intimidating customers sits with their 'ethical policy'.

Thanks for your reply, That is a really good idea about writing to the Co OP they should know what is going on in their car park. I will try not to worry but they are shrewd and know that it bothers ordinary law abiding people to get letter like this but I will stay strong. (will you visit me when they lock me up).

Well, thought I would report on what has happened since - I received a total of 7 letters the last one said Notice prior to County Court proceedings this was on 17th Aug which I duly filed in my 'No Action file'. Today is 14th October and I have received nothing since so fingers crossed they have given up on me. So please take all the advice on this site and JUST IGNORE, FILE AWAY AND DO NOT REPLY..

Thanks for saving me money.
