Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister

Recommended Posts

Whole new economic strategy required for UK.  Too much of the money invested in UK comes from foreign companies, who ensure that they pay as little tax in the UK as possible.

When you look at say Guernsey or Jersey, you will see large numbers of brass plates outside of offices, with names of companies that are apparently based from there.  While the rules may require at least one member of staff from the company to work from the office, I suspect that nobody checks that this is the case.  There may be people who work for the company that services the offices, who will forward on any post that is received, but not much more than that.

If Boris wanted to raise more money to pay for the NHS and other essential services,  then I think he needs to ask Chancelllor Sunak to look at money in/out of places like Guernsey and Jersey.

I have read about a number of residential and commercial developments in the South West of England, where the developer is from outside of Europe but they have an office in Guernsey.  This is so they can increase their profits as a result of hardly paying any taxes.

Yes Tories know all about Tax Havene, but Labour under Blair and Brown did not do anything about this issue or any action was so minor I cannot remember.

Unless UK and other Governments stop the abuse of companies and the wealthy hiding their investments in tax havens, then we will continue to have problems that face the majority of people.  If people on modest incomes are paying a higher percentage of taxes and face increasing costs of living, then we could see a consumer financial crash.  People will have to cut back on their spending and the wealthy will eventualy see their investments fall in value.

I visited Bath recently and I noticed a large number of shops were closed. Much of this is due to Covid and the lack of tourists. But some of this is due to a change in consumer behaviours, as with less money to spend and not wanting to incur petrol/parking costs, they now order the goods they require online.  For this reason, I doubt the large retail space vacated by Debenhams will ever be filled by any similar retail business.  And the same story will be true of most high streets around the UK.

Even more basic - No government has done anything significant to stop water companies  making money from NOT meeting their basic requirements .. and it being more 'cost effective' for them to pay the fines on the few occasions they are caught ..

.. the fines should be/must be astronomical.

One of a number of reasons why many people say 'they are all as bad as each other'

They aren't, but labours failings in basic areas is inexcusable - Johnson has shown that complete bags of cack can be pushed through, so why not fixing something pretty basic that improves life generally in the UK?

I'm no socialist, although i have some leanings that way, but basic management of societies core needs should surely be the NO1 priority for any government worthy of being called such.

Like touting nuclear energy as the solution to the Russian gas issue

- no it isnt. A solution arriving 30 years or so in the future simply isnt a solution.

Heres a nuclear solution ..

Fasten up the nuclear deterrent subs in deep rivers against gas fired power stations, convert the gas station to hydrogen and use the subs nuclear reactors to split water into hydrogen to power the stations while small nuclear reactors are built and speedily implemented under modernized and profit free projects under army control - not middlemen profits control

point of interest

Did you all know that wind turbines are quite regularly shut down because where they feed into the grid quite often cant take/use the power ..

- shunt that into small local power stations using the surplus to create hydrogen to store for firing up the gas turbines for peak load

- making a difference in about 18 months tops

Tankers could ship the gas while pipelines are built underground.

an all UK solution.

I still think that the best way to solve an energy crisis, is to reduce the level of demand.   And to have smaller scale generation of power, converting waste into energy.   I am surprised that there is not a way for plastic waste to be turned into enegy at a cost that makes it worthwhile.

So whos going to give up heating and cooking even more than they have already been forced to?

Some detail please.

.. Well apart from those who already cant afford it even before the doubling and trebling of the price cap while big energy companies make record profits?

and why would you believe anything Johnson says wouldn't result in something very different - almost certainly further enriching the rich and further bleeding dry everyone else?

Well people I speak to have already started to take steps to reduce usage. E.g. they will only switch on heating for shorter set periods and only for longer if the weather is very cold. People are buying extra jumpers and thermal clothing.  And turn off all appliances that can be switched off overnight. So don't leave TV set top box and WiFi router switched on.

When buying food, people are going for the non cooking items or shorter cooking options. So not buying large chunks of meat for slow cooking etc.

Don't use cars for journeys that can be made by walking. More people are leaving cars at home and walking the 20 minutes to local shops.

People are definitely trying to use less energy, but I think it should go much further. Retailers should be encouraging less packaging and selling more loose product.  All of the packaging has cost a fortune in energy to produce and then we have the waste to deal with. So business has a big part to play in helping consumers reduce energy usage.

You mean like Johnson burning 12 billion quids worth of useless PPE which Johnson and the last health minister (forgot his name - little wimpy prat who enriched his pub pal landlordenriched his VIPals 10 minute old companies with taxpayer money for?

So - give us some real world examples of who is going to stop using energy for the next 5-30 years and alternatives @unclebulgaria67

My sub option while portable nuclear and/or more wind with hydrogen conversions is perfectly workable - apart from the draft the subs need being an issue for most rivers - but thats a minor inconvenience.

That they would be sitting targets for a first strike is likely not greatly different given modern advance is sub detection and underwater nuclear capabilities and that NATO members shouldalso carry out a response (the real deterrent ... so far)

- they would just be more of a land based launch system who would die with the rest of us after launching their response.

There must be some gas/oil  fired power stations that can be relatively speedily converted to hydrogen or hydrogen peroxide, and electrolysis is something we used to do experiments on in a school lab with a few bits of wire 55 years ago.

Largely forced to as they cant afford the bills - I said apart from them

You do realise that the wealthy use 10-100 times the energy resources of ordinary folk dont you (and that excludes the super wealthy who use 1000's x more

reduce plastic waste - yes absolutely,

BUT if you've tried this you would see you likely be paying more in washing your own containers (and paying for the water, detergent and heating t do it) AND the goods are more often than not more expensive than bulk packed. Remember most of the people who would probably cant afford that. A few things work out superficially cheaper - but not many. The TV specials like good food cheaper dont show realities - just selected best cases.

Think it through - johnson spouts whatever comes into his head - its not a real world option for anything but disaster.

More on major projects and populist personal preference

Very Important Populist MP: Route it through some oiks neighborhoods not mine

Other populist MP/minister: but that will cost billions more

Very Important Populist MP: So? If that bothers you scrap this bit then.

Other populist MP/minister: but that calls into question the whole project and billions already spent and to be spent with loads of profits to enrich our pals and doners for decades to come

Very Important Populist MP: Good point, but Why? the oiks can still cough up whether its any use to them or not. , we only really wanted to justify a fast bit for us to use to get to London with oiks paying our fares

Other populist MP/minister: AH Good point - we'll do that then.

Even thats wrong.

Look at prices - a box of store brand branflakes (for example) is far cheaper than branded or loose and the box goes in the recycling

A tin of store  beans is half the price or less than branded beans - and the tin is recycled

People need to stop buying glossy food, and stop buying and making more than they eat, but its the packaging companies that need to do something about the packaging - even if they neem to be driven by people not buying it.

... All of which above the above will make an indistinguishable tiny dint in the UKs energy usage, and be little more than a soundbite misused by populists.

There simply is no future in hydrocarbons literally and figuratively.

What options are there to move away from gas and oil?

- all electric? - what about the horrendous cost in money and environmental damage that large batteries cost? Frying pan to fire without quantum leaps in efficiency.

- Hydrogen plus intelligent limited/very tailored use of batteries is the only real world option I can see.

Hydrogen is a never ending and highly efficient energy store that can replace gas an oil and is the ultimate in recyclable. There are losses in converting wind, Tide, sun and nuclear (nuclear if efficiency of build and use is improved as it can be) - but nothing like the 10s of millions of years of inefficiency of creating or using hydrocarbons, or the environmental costs.

Even the recent microbes generating 'hydrocarbons' isnt a patch on the solar/wind/tidal - hydrogen options.

"Rishi Sunak has been listed as a beneficiary of tax haven trusts while setting taxes in the UK as chancellor of the exchequer, according to documents seen by The Independent.

Trusts in the British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands, created to help manage the tax and business affairs of his wife Akshata Murty’s family interests, note Mr Sunak as a beneficiary in 2020, according to people familiar with Ms Murty’s financial affairs and evidence reviewed by this publication. Mr Sunak became chancellor in February that year, and had previously been chief secretary to the Treasury since 2019."
