hi hope someone can give me some advice, i recently took out car insurance with octagon the asked for my no claims i sent my no claims of 5 years, they then contacted me to say they were out of the 24 months, i explained that i was insured after that, but because my husband picked the new car up he set the insurance up in his name and me as a named driver, the policy was with octagon and has been running for 20 months, they are now telling me they will only give me one year no claims as a named driver, i have tried to explain to them if you except that i was still insured why wont they accept the 5 years also, i have spoke to 3 people with no help, they are saying i will need to pay another 256.08 to keep my policy, and if i cancel i will need to pay 50.00 cancel fee because its after 14day cooling off period, 25.00 finance payment and time on risk payment, i just cant afford this but they are saying there nothing that can be done. please help

I would suggest that you write to them recorded delivery marking it FORMAL COMPLAINT

you should get a response as speaking to them on the phone is pointless

good luck:-)

If i have helped in any way hit my star.

any advice given is based on experience and learnt from this site :-)

For you to maintain a no claims discount, most companies require you to maintain a policy in your name, without any gap exceeding 24 months. If you have periods of less than 24 months for which you don't have no claim discount proof in your name, you need to provide written evidence with the no NCD proof, as to why there was a gap.

So Octagon may well be correct and you will face the same situation with other companies. I think Coop Insurance may accept NCD proof up to 3 years old, but whether they are competitive for you, then you will have to phone them for a quote. Also speak to local Insurance brokers about this, to see what they can find for you.

In this situation, where you have a couple or husband/wife, quite often they will swap the policyholder name around every 12 or 24 months, so they don't end up without no claim discount that is not acceptable for one of the parties.

We could do with some help from you.

I must admit that I think that Octagon may be right in this instance though it may be worth seeing if you can salvage your no claims somehow, even if with another company as 5 years is a lot to lose.

I used Octagon for a couple of years and they were to be fair a pretty good budget company, I swapped to the AA this year as they gave me a better quote.

They are correct if you took the policy online you have to tick a box which states you can proved NCB which is valid within the last 2 years before you can take out the policy. It can be easy to miss this. Do you have your spouse on your policy and if so if he has any NCB he is not using he could sign it over to you to use on your policy?
