Yesterday our postman "delivered" a package to my house. It was a box containing a hair oil treatment. The delivery was made by throwing the package through the open bathroom window, it landed on the bathroom floor causing the contents to break and spill out of the cardboard box and onto the tiled floor. My wife discovered the package when she stepped onto the tiles and slipped narrowly avoiding a fall but jarring her hip (she has had a hip replacement). The oil had spread for some distance and when we cleaned it up it ruined my wife's slippers and a polo shirt which I was wearing.

All in all quite a disaster for an item costing less than £10. We have got pictures of the damaged package covered in it's contents but still unopened. My question is how do i deal with this with Royal Mail.

Dunno..What contact details are on their website, is there a complaints procedure, best to follow thios before starting any legal action (which by the sounds of it you would be entitled to).

Having seen the claim form (P58) it would appear that Royal Mail are only expecting me to claim for the package and to happily forget about the ruined clothes and the danger that they caused to my wife. Do I need to write a strongly worded letter to them ?

Lots of info here > http://www.royalmail.com/customer-service/personal-customers/refunds-and-compensation/claims-process and > http://www.royalmail.com/customer-service/personal-customers/refunds-and-compensation/claims-process and various othe links.

It would appear that you can claim for damaged items (covered upto £46 in normal 1 st class), although noty sure if this would cover further loss that you are claiming, perhaps write to them and see how you get on, otherwise perhaps a claim at county court (or at least the threat of) would bring results. (I would of thought you have a possibilty of suing for damages).

The complaints process is here > http://www.royalmail.com/customer-service/complaints-process

  • 1 month later...

I am pleased to hear that this has now been resolved.

Just out of interest, does your postman often dump things through the bathroom window ? Ours did once and it landed in the sink !
