I have been employed in DWP for nearly 20 years, 16 as an AO, where on earth did you find the minmum of £18k? I wouldn't earn £18k if I was full time :o in fact still not at the band maximum of wage despite the length of service as an AO.

Poverty only exists if someone is not able to pay for the very basic requirements of life, a roof over your head (a tent would suffice) food in your belly (just count the calories, never mind the rest) and somewhere to sleep (a sleeping bag would suffice).

Have I experienced it - oh yes! Would I be prepared to do it again - if I have to.

No body should have to live in a tent, or sleep outside in a sleeping bag, there is a man who lives in a tent, near to the dual carriageway by us, I pass him everyday its a disgrace in this day and age.

But unfortunately those definitions I have given are acceptable to the government and local authorities.

A tent is classed as a 'home' and a sleeping bag is accepted as suitable to keep you warm at night. As for food, all that matters is the level of calorie intake. Any supplements can be obtained on prescription.

'Tent & shanty towns' are springing up all over Britain.

I'd check your cite again - AO National scale maxes at about £18k.

Also, the DWP is one of the poorest paid government departments. Further, the AO grade represents something like 49% of all DWP employees, or did last time I checked in 2010.
