I have today received approx 15 phone calls to my home and mobile phones, that I did not take as I was out,

when I eventually did answer had a man saying he was Paul from HMRC

and that they had sent me 3 letters about my NI contributions,,

he asked where I worked so I told him.

He then said ok well we'll email you an update form to fill in so I gave him my email address but I haven't received anything.

What made me suspicious is that the last call was at 5.40pm and I would have thought that HMRC would be closed then.

If this is indeed a DCA as I'm 2 payments behind with capital one and vanquis, due to recent job loss,

but have now got a new one, will they contact my employers as if they do start harassing me at work I would lose my job!!!

Feel so stupid now for giving the man the information but he seemed genuine!! I could kick myself!!!

You must report this to HMRC take a look at the website I think

there is a facility to report this kind of thing.

Are the numbers the calls originate from available if so try ''Who Calls Me''

on the net.

Any Letters I Draft are N0T approved by CAG and no personal liability is accepted.

if you have not received any calls since, punch 1471 into your phone and see if there is a number there.

Then you can try and work out who called you.

I think Iqor have access to the HMRC data base for the collection of back taxes. If they are using their position for other DCA activities, then they need to be reported.

Citizen be is correct there are quite a number of Debt Collection Agencies

contracted to Government departments BUT they must identify themselves

by business name and state that they are acting on behalf of the dept concerned.

The number was withheld, but what made me think was that after I had spoken to "Paul" my 17 year son came in and said "the tax people rang you today and said you had overpayed them and they need to speak to you" now I think I'm correct in thinking they wouldn't discuss this with my son?

And I have definitely not had 3 letters from HMRC about NI, and the gentleman said I definitely wouldn't owe them money, if anything they would owe me and I would get a rebate!! I certainly do not believe this is the case as I only work 20 hours and pay very little NI!!

I suggest you phone HMRC tomorrow and report this on their website as well, as advised by Brig in an earlier post.

AHhh that puts a whole new scenario I think this is a con the overpayment

is non existant, the caller will ask for bank details to make a payment in to,

BUT your account will be raided, do not give any details over the phone.

If you do identify that this is one of your creditors then almost certainly you should report them to OFT / FOS as this is truly disgraceful behaviour.

They are not permitted to harass you at work - it is a breach of OFT guidelines. It is obvious they have a telephone number for you (if it was a creditor) as they have been calling you all day !!

IF and ony IF it was a creditor/DCA then they could simply be checking to see if you do have employment.

Just keep checking your in/spam box for a couple of days. Meanwhile, just protect yourself by telephoning HMRC to see if this was a genuine call.

At least you havent given any valuable information such as your bank account or NI number. Who knows, this might actually be a genuine call!!
