My girlfriend received a letter today addressed to her sons name, but her address, from Red saying he owes over a grand. My girlfriends son passed away in Sept 2005.

My gut instinct is to fire off a letter full of expletives, telling 'em how disgusted we are & basically to f o.

My girlfriend says she had a similar letter, (but can't remember from whom), a few years back saying the same thing, she phoned them then, told 'em he'd passed away, but whoever it was wanted proof, basically my girlfriend told 'em 'if you want proof get it yourself' and told 'em to f o.

What's the best thing to do?

Ruddy Lowell, insignificant puerile muppets, I would be inclined to do the exact same, give em a ring and vent your spleen at em. Unfortunately, whilst this will undoubtedly make you feel much better, it will only make them use a different name and continue with the harassment.

Red are Lowell, and they have about four other names they like to hide behind in some deluded attempt at intimidating alleged debtors.

Your OH should register her sons name with the bereavement registry http://www.thebereavementregister.org.uk/ it won't stop these uneducated morons, you could either send the letter back in the post, marked as deceased, write and tell them, and then complain to the FOS http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumer/complaints.htm

Who ever heard of someone getting a job at the Jobcentre? The unemployed are sent there as penance for their sins, not to help them find work!

Ignore the muppets and see if they start making threats of court action etc. Could be quite interesting if they do as it will show that they are totally useless at checking the information before sticking their size 9's in their mouth!

Take it to your MP and get them to contact Red, aka Lowell, Hampton and now Tocatta as well. Tell your MP your grilfriend is distressed by this and deserves compensation for them stirring all this up when she's already told someone what the situation is.

Having a chat with your local paper is also a good idea. It's also worth reporting them to the OFT, they won';t do anything about individual cases, but will build up a bigger picture of how these companies operate from all the complaints they get.

Be good to those who give you advice that helps - click the star to give them your thanks by way of a reputation credit.

Surely if the estate of her son has been duly through probate etc.

all creditors would have been advised to claim at the time.

So telling them to FO is reasonable, it's awful for her to have this dragged upagain the only way this ****

will back down is if you can produce a copy of the death certificate.

Is this a debt collection agency or an original creditor?

Complaints to OFT.ICO are appropriate I think.

Any extra detail will provide every one to respond in more detail.

It's Lowell under their pathetic name RED!!!

If they demand proof by way of a death cert then they can go and pay for it themselves. Idiots.

Just write them a short note advising that this person died on such and such a date and if they wish to check further or obtain a copy of the death certificate for their records, then they should apply to the appropriate place with the required fee.

Advise them that you have been distressed considerably by this harrassment and intend making a complaint to the FOS and OFT.

He had no estate or assets so to speak, the original creditor was Natwest, that's all i know, the debt being just over £1000.

Thank you to everyone who replied, few things to think about, probably fire off a 'sharp' letter, then send contents of their letter to the appropriate organisations.

Just popping in here to say that I know from personal experience how aweful this can be, my daughter was killed at the age of 24 and I was deluged by way of re-directed mail for several years after her death. Their total mindset iis that everyone is a liar, even to the point of saying someone is dead, after all there is even a code for it on the CRA files!!

No - don't just tell them you might make a complaint.

Please make those complaints.
