The UK TV Licensing model now looks seriously outdated against the many pay monthly streaming rivals such as Netflix, Now TV and Amazon. The UK TV license costs £145 per annum or £12 monthly whereas a standard Netflix account is £7.50 monthly and Now TV Entertainment pass is £6.99. This makes the TV license 40% more expensive than its rivals.

For second home owners the price of the TV License doubles even when it will get much less use whereas with the streaming services you pay only slightly more to watch on more than one screen at the same time regardless of location, ideal for providing high quality entertainment in holiday homes.

The BBC provides a very broad range of services but with many people now choosing to only watch selected high quality programming on demand the traditional UK TV license and content delivery model now looks very outdated and expensive compared to streaming rivals producing very high quality original drama. It feels like many UK TV license payers are now subsidising the few people who still watch live TV. Time for change, the BBC should adopt a democratic approach to revenue generation where consumers choose what content they pay for.

The BBC and UKGov have no intention of abolishing the TV Tax, and the BBC managed to get catch up streaming pulled into the License regime. They will no doubt sooner or later try to bring all streaming into the TV Licence/Capita regime with a goon knocking on the door and prosecuting a whole new raft of evaders who previously didn't need a License as they only watched Non I-Player streaming, Blu-Ray and DVD. A good source of information is here

http://tv-licensing.blogspot.co.uk/, and there was an article in the Daily Mail last week regarding the TV License and its method of collection by Capita.

The BBC should be a subscription service and opened up worldwide, they would get far more that way than the TV Tax which should be abolished forthwith.

I bought a licence last autumn to stay legal with i-player. We have no TV aerial and only watch online. I won't be renewing, hate to admit it but I only really cared about watching Bake-off and that's going so I'll be back to not needing one. I am dreading the can of worms I opened by buying a licence and the threats I'll be subject to for goodness knows how long.
