Hi All,

Bit confused here and wanted to be sure.

I arranged for an electrician to come to our house (its owned by my girlfriend) he did some work. He then wanted a payment which my g/f tried to make online but got an error. So I paid it from my account.

Who would legally have the contract for the work done?

I ask as there are major problems with the work carried out.

Many Thanks for any help :)

Hi,

I would think you as you arranged it and made payment.

If in doubt, you should seek the opinion of a Qualified Professional.

I'm not sure, just my initial thought.

I'll see if I can get someone smarter than me to comment.

I can only concur with maroon...if you initiated the work...then its with you...irrespective of who paid for it.

Pursue the electrician though if you are not satisfied with the work carried out.

Hi All,

We employed an Electrician to rewire our house.

He did an assessment and informed us it didn't need to be rewired,

just a few changes would do (still 35 hours of work, which isn't far off what a rewiring would have taken).

However, we had problems after he did the work and got another opinion.

This second electrician informed it did need rewiring.

I've now got a third person to do an assessment and he said no doubt it needs rewriting.

I've also asked the original electrician to give his reason for giving that advice and he is refusing to answer.

He also didn't provide a safety certificate and he left live wires exposed.

This situation is a disaster as we wanted this work done as soon as we moved into the house.

We also work from home and wanted to avoid disruption, which we made very clear to this guy.

We have also since redecorated some of the house and laid carpets.

The house was built in 1970 and has never been rewired,

I think this alone would normally be a good reason to rewire.

We are considering taking this to court.

Does anyone have any feedback?

Thanks

Well if you wish to sue him..then sue him John...but consider the following.

Did he provide a quotation/recommendation for all the electrics works ?

You gave him the go the head and agreed the price?

Was he Registered ? Did you check ? DId you ask for certificate on completion ? Registered electricians work to the UK national safety standard (BS 7671) and will give you a safety certificate to confirm that their work has been designed, inspected and tested in line with that standard.

Have you kept further written quotations/surveys stating that his work is substandard?

You will need to consider all the above and provide evidence to substantiate any claim.

Regards

Andy

Thanks you Andy. I do have a good evidence trail. I do not believe he is registered, does this only mean I cannot log a complaint with the appropriate body, or is there something else as well?
