A few years ago, I had a bad Seizure, While I was out

Which resulted in the loss of, 3 Bottom Teeth, And Crack 2 Top Teeth,

My Epilepsy causes me to have Grand Mals,

Which have been quite bad at times, This time being one of them.

Sometimes I've no memory of up to 2 weeks before it,

When I went to the Dentist , He said a Pallet wasn't an option, Due to the danger of possibly having a Grand Mal while wearing it, And it becoming stuck in my throat, Which i knew anyway, because i'd almost swallowed my tongue and hurt it quite bad in the past.

So A Temporary Bridge and Caps were the first to try,

Over about a year I felt it loosening the teeth either side of it,

So now Basically, What teeth I have left are knackered,

The Only Option U Have Is Implants.

Which I Know at the price they are , I'll Never Be Able to Afford,

This Made Me Paranoid, I Suffer With Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Which Became Worse.

Never going out anywhere incase anyone saw me.

And Very Depressed, I Wont have my pictures taken, I hate how i look to people

My GP came to my home last year,And said that she was Referring me on Medical Grounds,

To get the treatment needed at The Dental Hospital

We Looked Up The Reasons Why You Would Be Refared For The Implants On NHS,

The Reasons Being.....

1. Missing More Than Half Of Teeth On "EITHER", Your Top Or Bottom Jaw..

2. Missing Over Half Your Teeth Before The Age Of 40

3. It Can Be Confirmed In Writing That All Other Methods Had Been Tried To Fix The Problem,

4. Or If It's Proved To Be Having An Affect To My Health And Living On A Day To Day Basis And Continue To Do So If Left As They Are

I Don't Just Come Under 1..I Come Under All 4 Of Them,

I'm Not Only Missing A Few On The Top Or Bottom Of My Mouth,

I've Been Missing Almost All Of Them, By The Time I Was 38.

I Can't Wear Removables, Through Risk Of Choking

I Just want to be able to talk without covering my face, Smile on a picture with my daughter,Go up to her school, Things what are normal everyday things to other people, But things i cant do

When I went to The Dental Hospital, The Dentist wasn't nice at all.

He said, I Wasn't Suitable for Implants, Because I Hadn't Had Cancer Of The Mouth, Or Had Suffered Severe Trauma,

Due To Being In An Accident .,

That's were I'm stuck at , It was My GP s First Time Dealing With Dentists, She Also Was Shocked That Medical Issues Meant Nothing When It Came To Treatments And Dentists, She said whatever she can do, She will do

Has Anyone Any Information Of Other Ways To Go About This Please ?

My sister is a dentist and as I recall during her training all of the treatments were carried out on people that could not afford treatment privately.

So maybe ask your GP to refer you to a Dental training Hospital.

I hope this is of help.

Hi, Ive tried every possable lead you can begin to imagine. My doctor said she had never come across it before in the time she had been a GP. That a docs refairal didnt meen anything. Because Teeth werent concidered as medical importance. I guess i understand under some of it. But this has put. Everything at. Stop for me thank u

I wish I could offer something more constructive but it seems that your only course of action is to direct your complaint to the head of the department where this decision was made. It might be useful to have your GP and perhaps your MP endorse your letter and to be willing to take the issue as far up the 'chain of command' as you're able to.

Good luck.

This is utter rubbish, of course teeth are of great importance; both psychologically and physically. I would hope that your GP will push harder for this to be dealt with.

I can only draw from my own experience I guess, I wonder which department you were referred to by your GP and under what premise. As daft as it might seem a referral to the maxillo facial surgeons because of difficulties in eating perhaps might carry more clinical weight than a referral to the plastics team. It is of course bureaucratic nonsense but I'd love to find a way around this. The best point of 'attack' I wou think would be the source of this decision made by the dentist and working the way up through the department. Ultimately they will be NHS trust and a letter to the department concerned would be worth copying to the concerns team as you ought to seek a clinical decision as to why they will or won't proceed.

Thank u for support everyone. I thought i might of been disagread with. And im being stupid for letting this affect my life so much. I havent had a photo taken with my daughter since she was 3. Shes just 13 now. I worked in club promotions before any of this. Now i wont walk in a club. Or neer lots of people. I panic. Crazy. And i wish more than anything that this hadnt affected me so much. But it has. In doing so its affected my daughter. And i hate myself for that. My gp is fab. She said she ll do whatever she can to help. Im the first patient that she has tried the liverpool univercity dental hospital with. So new to her aswell. She refaired me on the grounds its caused my epilepsy to get worse. Its caused anxiety, deppression and pannic attacks. It meant nothing. When he said i dont think u qualify because its more for those who have suffered severe facial traumer. Or mouth cancer. I felt even worse for wanting it

Twinkle, a few things to do maybe:

Get back in touch with your GP, by phone is probably best (it's an exceptionally busy time of year for GP practices and I'm certain she'll appreciate your patience) and find out a little more about your original referral. Was it direct to Liverpool Royal and their dental hospital or was it to Max Fax? Under what premise was the referral made? Was it a matter of cosmetic dentistry or functional problems? Ask if she's willing to call and speak to the department before re-referring you so that she can impress on them the importance of having this done and to find out what their criteria are in case they differ.

With the GP's and/or practice managers help get a complaint rolling to establish the reason behind the first dentist refusing to go further, be prepared for the fact that your epilepsy and/or any other conditions might have had a part in deciding the risk/benefit of placing you under anaesthetic to carry out the work.

If you prefer to have independent help too approach your local citizens advice, patient liaison or support groups. I wonder if any of the epilepsy support groups have any experience in similar cases too? Speak with your MP and take with you all of the information and evidence and ask for their support. Are they aware of any local differences to what you've already established seems to be national guidelines?

At the very top of this a decision will still need to be made about your suitability for such a procedure and how the benefits of having it done need to grossly outweigh the risks. That's most definitely a clinical decision but with sufficient influence on the decision maker it might be one that they think on a little longer.

I Cant begin to tell you how good it is to know not everyone agrees with the guy i saw,

Now today (crazy after us talking of it) the second letter was sent to the lpool dental hospital month ago.

I got a letter today with an appointment 11 th march, Thing is its the same guy as last time, i dnt think he s going to change his oppinion

However I Emailed a few Complaint Emails off a few weeks ago, I Received 3 Reply s, Which said basically the same as The first guy at the Hospital I saw a few years ago, IMPLANTS AREN'T MEDICAL,THEY'RE COSMETIC, Hearing that Drives me mad.

Then I read one off A Lady From... NHS ENGLAND, From A Lady Who Is A Customer Contact Case Officer,

Who was disgusted, By the fact I'd been Refused previously,

She asked for my GPs details, And My DOB , Along with permission, To Contact who need be, To See What Can Be Done?

She Was Lovely.

I Thank You So Much, For everyones advice and help, I'm still taking Notes of it all, Just Incase I'm Refused Again,

think about it , Thank You For ALL Your Advice.I really do appreciate all of it .

Does anyone happen to know just how much of an influence, NHS England is?

Do I still go next month, And see The Guy at The Liverpool Univercity Hospital?

Also My GP Refaired Me On Mental Health, Not Cosmetic,

It Was The Guy I Saw At The Hospital, Who Has The Final Say,

Who Said That Implants Were Only For Those Who Had Severe Trauma To There Mouth (ie Car Accident) .Or Mouth Cancer,

He Didn't Think I Fitted The Criteria, To Be entitled

Thanks Again for taking time out to help x

That is good news and a step in the right direction.

I would contact the Lady at NHS England and inform her of the new appointment and who it is with so she can contact him with her views on the matter.

She will also keep an eye on things for you.

Tell her what you have told us.

I wish you the very best of luck.

Hi Twinkle

On a medical ground, how would your seizures affect the implants? Could you damage them every time you had one?

Twinkle, just reading through your posts and I wonder if you'd consider taking someone with you for a bit of moral support to the next consultation? Lots of different organisations can offer advocacy services who might be able to send someone along with you to help.

In which case, speak with your GP / Practice Manager and ask them to call the hospital and explain this to request that your appointment is scheduled for a more suitable time.
