A friend of mine took some digital photo images whilst in Greece recently; of some strange phenomena in the sky.

Before seeking opinions from the media on what they are, can anyone tell me how to protect ownership of the images please ?

thank you

As the photographer, you (or rather your friend) automatically owns the copyright and all associated privileges that goes with the image(see: http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy/c-about/c-auto.htm). Protecting the image from copyright infringement is difficult, and once posted online, virtually impossible.

You could embed copyright information within the image file, but this is fairly easy to remove. Alternatively, you can superimpose ownership details across the image - Messy, and detracts from the image, but is quite popular.

Should you find anyone infringing copyrights, it can be a costly and lengthy process to pursue the matter through the courts - Unless you are a well known photographer, the amounts you could claim would be relatively minor. If the infringement takes place overseas, the costs become extremely costly with no guarantee of success.
