I've sent him a copy of the letter that came with it. Barclaycard have already confirmed its a genuine cheque. Honestly, they must ask the staff at interview "do you have a low intelligence?" When they say yes they welcome them with open arms!!!!

Without wishing to sound argumentative, the "Payee only" is the warning. This means it is a cheque that can only be cashed by the person named on the cheque and that would have to be via their bank account, whomever they banked with.

This means that a pawnbroker for instance cannot normally cash such a cheque into their bank account. This is to prevent the cheque from being cashed by somebody else in the event it was lost or stolen.

It is sometimes known as a Crossed cheque, as opposed to an Open cheque, which can be cashed anywhere such as a pawnbroker or high street payday lenders.

I have never heard of somebody being able to transfer the right of the cheque to a third party as the "payee only" cheque is "non-negotiable". Maybe Barclaycard can shed more light on that aspect.

Hope this helps

Doesn't explain why I have cashed one before.

Well, I've just been into the Barclays branch with the girl from the shop. After a bit of arguing and attitude from the manager they have taken the cheque, and issued one of their own, and that was then cashed into the shops account. So all sorted. Barclays are saying they will persue payment from Barclaycard!!! Mmm persuing themselves!!!!!

And I stole a pen!!

According to Barclays they have had a few of these cheques, so why arnt they doing anything about it?!

The shop are sending a complaint to Barclaycard, as am I. I will of course be contacting the fos.

I have it in writing from a Barclaycard executive" I don't really understand how cheques work"

You couldn't make it up if you tried!!!

I've emailed Anthony Jenkins with everything that's gone on and informed him I will be going to the press about their dodgy practices.

Well had a reply from barclaysharks

" yada yada we would like to offer you a good will gesture of £50.00 towards the inconvenience you have been caused by the problem with the Barclays cheque machine"

If you would like to accept this offer please contact me on x and we can arrange for a cheque (yeah right), or transfer the funds directly into a bank account for you. I cannot however accept your instructions by email ( but they can accept sar instructions by email?)

Sar

You have advised you have not received copies of letters. The letters you refer to are held on our complaints system (so?) and I would like to clarify we do not normally send these (why the hell not?)yada yada you should receive these in 10 days yada yada

You have advised that we have not included terms and conditions with your credit agreement. Copies of terms and conditions are not normally sent as part of a sar yada yada I cannot find a request for this yada yada ( then how come I have receipts and digs for a cca sent two years ago that still hasn't been complied with?)

If this is the case for legal reasons (ha) I have to ask you to put this in writing to us yada yada"

You know what bothers me the most? It's not the fact they are lying its the fact they are lying badly!!

You got to ask yourself why any corporation would need a "specialist team" to deal with complaints?

That just speaks volumes about the state a corporation is in, why anyone would trust such an institution is beyond me, but people have to bank somewhere I guess.

Remember the good old days when you got your wage/pittance in a brown envelope?

The fact that major corporations have specialist complaints departments just shows how bad they are at dealing with the people who pay their wages,(us, their customers)
