Thanks for that - it is a great help. I have just taken a photograph of the inside of mine and am trying to upload it but it keeps saying not de-coded correctly and maybe corrupt!

Will have another try at fitting the card as shown in your picture.

Well, doesn't seem to be my night.

I have taken photograph of inside my PC but it won't let me upload it to here (not decoded correctly).

I have tried again upstairs to fit it but the slot in which is where I believe it needs to go is too far away from where the antenna on the silver bar plate goes. Does that make sense?

I have removed the plate as shown above but the Wifi card i have isn't long enough because it wont reach the slot it needs to sit in. The card needs to have a bridging element to its length to go over the gap between the plate opening and the slot it would sit in. Hope that makes sense.

Have opened the metal box and found the white strips. However, when the card is attached to the metal strip which came with the Wifi card it will not line up to get the screws back in.

If I try to leave the card connected to the metal strip it will not line up with the gap by at least 4mm

I have tried putting the card into the white strips with out the metal strip and carefully connected the antenna, replaced the box and plugged in. PC won't switch on at all!!!

This thing is beating me, and I am not one for giving up but I don't know what to do next :(

Hi Shelley,

If you look at the metal part of the wifi card, the bit that looks very similar to the blanking plate you removed, one side is bent in with a groove at the top - this is where the screw fixes the bracket to the case... on the other side it will be keyed.

If you look where the card is meant to go into the motherboard, you will notice the pci slots are positioned close to the edge of the motherboard, look closely just passed where the end of the board is and you should see some indentations where the keyed part of the pci wifi card will slot into?

You will know the card is installed properly as it will not push in any further.

The reason your pc isn't turning on is most likely because the card isn't installed properly.

No need to panic there :)

Hi Shelley,

If you look at the metal part of the wifi card, the bit that looks very similar to the blanking plate you removed, one side is bent in with a groove at the top - this is where the screw fixes the bracket to the case... on the other side it will be keyed. I am ok with this

If you look where the card is meant to go into the motherboard, ( I take this to be the flat surface) you will notice the pci slots are positioned close to the edge of the motherboard, ( yes, there are 3 white lines where cards will fit) look closely just passed where the end of the board is and you should see some indentations where the keyed part of the pci wifi card will slot into?( not sure where you mean here.

The metal part of the card will only fit horizontal - If I put the green part of the card into the white slot directly into the motherboard, the metal part of the card is vertical so it won't fit anywhere. However, inside the the metal box I took off, there is a further 2 white lines/slots where the card could go and this is where I have been trying to fit the card because the metal part of the card is horizontal and albeit, it is 3-4mm out of line, it seems to be the only viable place for it to fit.

You will know the card is installed properly as it will not push in any further.

The reason your pc isn't turning on is most likely because the card isn't installed properly. That's what I assumed :(

No need to panic there :)

I now have the PC downstairs in pieces ARGH!!!

I have removed the metal part of the card and put that in the place where I had removed the blank plate from.

Then I have put the green part of the card in the white slot in the Motherboard.

When I come to replace the metal box the gold end of the antenna which is attached the end of the green card does not line up with the hole on the metal plate and will not allow me to replace the screws to get an earth connection.

Is it possible that the PC is simply too old or have I got the wrong card?

Really appreciate your help and thank you for your patience.

Locutus, dx, & Steve,

Thank you all for your hard work and efforts to help me with this problem.

TBH, I gave up with it at 4am this morning follwoing an email I received from the retail outlet I bought it from who said my PC was probably too old.

I have now purchased a Netgear N300 Wireless USB adapter and that installed in 10 mins. Obviously, more expensive but its working.

I am now trying to read reams of stuff on how to setup a network so that my laptop (Windows 7) can talk to Old PC ( Windows XP) and printer/fax. Is it possible to network 2 different operating systems?

If your at a loose end, I would really apppreciate some guidance with that please :)

Instructions in 'IDIOT GUIDE FORMAT' would be appreciated.

Thanks again guys :)

That sounds so simple but it hasn't worked in part.

Not my day, again.

I installed the wireless USB and that worked fine and I had access to the internet.

I then took my laptop upstairs to do as you suggest with the penstick and it appeared to be working but when I came to share the printer it has shown a yellow triangle warning sign with the message "There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network" and kicked me out of the internet.

I had still got internet on the laptop but not on the old PC but it was telling me I needed to have the internet open on the computer that had the printer connected to it.

I can't believe that everything I am trying is going belly up :(

Question: Can I have a network between 2 computers which both operate on different systems? Windows XP & Windows 7

Can I scrap that network and start again otherwise I think I will get even more confused?

yep. Its very easy to set up a network between multiple machines, as long as they are running the same kernel. With xp and up, thats something along the lines of the NT kernel, But in laymans terms, Win xp/vista/7/8.

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/set-up-a-secure-wireless-network-in-windows-7.html

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/simple-guide-setting-home-wireless-network/

The key to creating a decent network is to ensure your router is configured correctly. If you have DHCP or a DMZ on it, then chances are you will have to enter the local IP address of each computer manually AND tell the router what to link it too when that IP sends an instruction.

If you follow various VERY simple guides on the net, it will become obvious as you start to do it. It sounds hard and looks hard if youve never done it before, but don't be afraid to experiment. The very worst that will happen is that you simply have to perform a factory reset on the router and re-enter your connection details again.

Any advice i give is my own and is based solely on personal experience. If in any doubt about a situation , please contact a certified legal representative or debt counsellor..

If my advice helps you, click the star icon at the bottom of my post and feel free to say thanks
