Dear Consumer Group,

I am wondering whether someone could help me on what I should do with HSBC Bank.

I went slightly over my very little agreed overdraft for 1.5 weeks by £300 due to bank charges a couple of cheques that were paid.

The arrears were cleared soon after my salary was credited into my account. However, to my surprise when I went to check my mortgage payments and a number of payments, I find myself in total shock to realize that HSBC cancelled all my direct debits and standing orders from my account. I am now facing a number of charges from my mortgage, credit cards, loans and much more.

I believe HSBC has a lot to respond for, can anyone advise me what to do as HCBS has not given me enough notice for me to change my direct debits and standing orders.

Much appreciated.

Aimfree

Hi Martin,

I have replied to your email. If you can help me how I should go about it, that will be great. I am very upset and not sure how to go on this. Not only that as a result of the cancellation of my direct debit, my mortgage has gone into arrears and I need to call them on Monday to make a manual payment but my credit file is flagged as one month payment in arrears

Thanks

There is a thread for HSBC/First Direct as they are doing this on a number of people to thin out their "troublesome" accounts. All my banking with First Direct was stopped 3 days before christmas on a day I had paid in a payment which greatly reduced my always managed properly overdraft facility and dropped me in the **** for christmas.

Their excuse was that I had missed a payment in October on my credit card, which was still within its limit, and to which they said they had written to me to warn this would happen which they hadn't. They even claimed to have rung me on the day they stopped my account and cited the only number they had was one from a workplace I left 12 years ago, despite them contacting me on my home phone and mobile to sell me things previously. They made me do a full income and expenditure breakdown before telling me they till wouldn't reinstate my accounts even though I offered to make good the missed payment of £100 on the credit card which was down to not receiving a statement due to the postal strike and personal problems at the time which meant I had taken my eye of the ball, this too was fully explained to them.

They were totally unco-operative depite me being a model cutomer for 15 years, never having previously mised a payment on anything and never abusing my overdraft facility. They are a bunch of bastards of the highest order in my opinion and an example of why so many people in thi country struggle with their finances when times are tough.

Hi aimfree , welcome to the HSBC forum :)

Sorry your query seems to have slipped through the net ...but I'll try to answer now .....

I think your first course of action should be to write to their Service Quality Department (hee hee , now there's a misnomer ):

HSBC Bank Plc

Service Quality Team

Arlington Business Centre

Millshaw Park Lane

Leeds

LS11 0PP

Tel 08456 028006

(don't phone them , you'll only get rudeness

and hassle

Fax 08001696143

Tell them exactly what you have told us in your first and fifth posts.... tell them this conduct is unacceptable , to cancel perfectly legitimate D/Ds and SO's without adequate warning ..... and that unless they re-instate your repayments and your account to it's previous situation,(within 14 days ) you will report this situation to Trading Standards and the Financial Ombudsman.

Send it 'Recorded Delivery' so you can trace it's receipt ... and keep copies to send to the TS and FOS if necessary ....

If you don't get a satisfactory response to this within the time scale ... come back and we'll help you take it further ........

Nemo me impune lacessit
