There we have it then!

Just because somebody doesn't drive or go abroad on holiday they are now unable to work in the UK according to shedsy!

I can't take anymore!!:rolleyes::D

Not really - its because they cannot prove who they are.

Besides, you dont have to be able to drive to have a provisional licence :D

Wrong, my new employer did and my policeman mate replied on force headed paper and stamp franked with South Wales Police!

Kinda blows your thinking a little wide eh shedsy?

Nope - it makes you a weird exception.

You know as well as I do that most employers get referneces of prior employers, so stop being awkward ;)

You only normally get a reference off someone other than a last employer if you havent worked before, or left under a cloud.....you arent a 16 year old fresh outta school Al are you?? :D

  • 1 year later...

Hi,

I went through this issue last October when joining a new company, they asked for a passport as identification when I don't have one and would not accept anything else as proof citing the immigration and employment acts.

It wasn't until I did a little research of my own into the subject that I found out that there is a lists of acceptable proof of id's within the legislation. I forwarded the legislation document to HR along with a birth cert and letter from the inland revenue; two forms of ID are deemed enough to show due diligence.

Companies can only be fined if they are shown to have failed due diligence in the vetting of new or existing staff which is the whole premise of the legislation not the collection of every single piece of personal data a person owns.

More to the point, 95% of companies would fail a data protection audit so the last thing I'd want is for them to have every single piece of personal information on me.

All the jobs I have had have only ever wanted to see my passport proof that the account I am paying my wages into is mine (I usually show my bank card) and proof of NI no (usually show p45)..

However the job I started a few months back at a national out of town retail fashion chain made me show my passport , birth certificate ( a full one-which btw I didnt have and had to go and pay for), a bank statement with the corresponding bank card, proof of address in the form of a utility bill and NI CARD!!! yes thats right the actual card! I told them my p45 would have to suffice as my NI card was stolen about 10yrs ago, but they wouldnt have it, I had to phone and get a replacement card!

I found all this ridiculous, normally I probably would have told them to stuff their minimum wage crappy job where the sun dont shine, but being desperate for any kind of job I could get I got everything they wanted.
