We have somewhat detracted from the point though.

People will lie about being raped in order to protect their social value, therefore even 100% DNA evidence cannot be counted as absolute proof.

I absolutly agree with this. There can also be physical evidence on the woman that would lead to more certainty in a conviction, but ultimatly none of the current techniques can be 100% conclusive in any crime. that is why we have the "beyond reasonable doubt" burden of proof.

I think that is upheld by the conviction rate in rape cases... I would actually hate to be in the position of having to decide who was lying.

It must be awful for the female in a true rape case which I suppose why so many in that position choose to just forget about it rather than have the indignity of reliving it in the public eye.

It is. The police were horrible to me. They called my parents before I had time to tell them and asked if I was on the game. They treated me as if I was lying or had asked for it. I told them to go stuff themselves and walked away.

Guy got sorted out though - my friends made sure of that.

Hm... not sure that i would normally condone taking the law into your own hands, however... stuff it, I hope they kicked him good and hard :)

Sorry - didn't mean to stop the conversation.

I don't think they hurt him too badly - just frightened him by pointing out that my brother was coming to stay with me. He didn't dare go home for weeks.

And, oh, my virile friends who do not need these things, there is the little matter of a blue lozenge which I understand work wonders whether one's little friend is willing or not? (saves on the matchsticks)

Not when unconscious I think you'll find. Even with alcohol they barely work.

...and fear will override where your blood pressure is pushing all the blood too, I would imagine.

Well, I have taken one - not that I needed too, doncha know, we thought it would be a giggle - it wasn't. It gave me a bloody great big headache and not a lot else!

Might have been the beer too, although I don't recall that night very well.

As far as I am aware, viagra only works when the man is sexualy aroused, and even then it only does what nature does anyway. If the man doesn't have E.D. then what will happen is what would normally happen.

Plus, a great big well deserved headache.

Shouldn't be taking prescription medicine without the prescription, folks:)

Hm.

So, does anyone else think that it's slightly unfair that scottish people get more MP's than they are entitled to, more tax money per capita than England, and pay less tax per person than the English, while scottish MP's can vote on solely English issues while English MP's can't vote on solely Scottish issues.

Regardless, I still wouldn't condone hanging for an offence that ultimately is someone's word against another's.

The effects of rape are not what is being discussed.

I wouldn't condone hanging at all.

Nor capital punishment - for many reasons.

Not that I particularly want to revive the conversation, but female on male rape is possible; physiological responses are to a certain degree involuntary, and that is where a large component of the guilt and feelings of self-hate and disgust come from in some rape victims; the knowledge that they, even involuntarily, felt some sort of pleasurable response from the attack, is utterly debilitating. I was disappointed by what I interpreted as the somewhat cavalier remarks on the subject.

But yeah, tone, I agree - let's move on.

I would not condone hanging, ever, regardless of any ones word against another, for what ever reason (s)

The effects of rape are not what is being discussed.

Just the mention of the word, RAPE, in my eyes deserves so much more respect than the flippancy that its getting on this thread.

Have your fun with viagra, have your fun with impotency, have your fun with father christmas. Im so upset you, and others can joke about rape.

Capital punishment doesn't act as a deterrent either. In countries/states where it is used the murder rate is disproportionately higher than countries/states where it has been abolished

BEFORE starting your claim read through the FAQ's and if there's something you aren't sure of then ask.

I think capital punishment is the sign of disregard for life in a society. i don't think it serves any useful purpose. If someone is a threat to society, locking them up will remove that threat.

I agree with both Bluey and TT.

I think punishment should be about public protection. Lock em up and throw away the key, I say.

Was re-reading Ian Brady's book yesterday. He thinks imprisonment is more cruel than capital punishment. That's a good enough reason or me (in his case).

So getting back to the title of the thread- do we advocate

1) build more prisons

2) But put more emphasis on rehabilitation while locked away?

3) Try the Zero tolerance regime that appears to have worked in NY?

4) Three strikes and your out (locked up)?

5) Provide more facilities for younger people to keep them occupied and off the streets

6) continue the fight to give more rights to victims rather than the offender?

7) personally ( as thats the idea of the thread) I would bring back stop and search.

8) And with respect to the comments on legalising drugs from someone with front line experience ,I would advocate more research as a priority into all options into tackling this problem.

2) But put more emphasis on rehabilitation while locked away?

I would add to that: improve mental health care, assessment and treatment in prisons, and build more secure hospitals. A close family member of mine is a Prison Officer, and the utterly wrenching (anonymised) stories of people who really, really should not be in a 'proper' prison are both heartbreaking and far too common.

And with respect to the comments on legalising drugs from someone with front line experience ,I would advocate more research as a priority into all options into tackling this problem.

Jan

Again, I support this wholeheartedly - but it must be unbiased, non-political research. You may think I'm a little distrusting, but research papers by major pharmaceuticals and governmental programs? don't inspire confidence in me one bit.
