I was driving along a road I was unfamiliar with and was (stupidly) relying on the speed limit on my satnav, which gave it as 40mph. A police officer zapped me from the other side of the road and I smugly thought 'well, I'm alright there' before driving past a brand-spanking-new 30 sign.I've received a NIP for the offence which states I was doing 38 in a 30 limit, in XXXX Road. Not know the area I drove that was again and found that the road stated in the NIP is wrong, it changes it's name twice before it gets to the bit where I was zapped.Should I just pay up and accept the points or challenge it?

If you "smugly thought 'well, I'm alright there' before driving past a brand-spanking-new 30 sign" : what was the speed limit before the sign ?

Did they clock you at 38 in the area before the 30 sign or after it?

What is the speed limit for the road they have named on the NIP? [if it is 40+, for all of the road named , that is quite some defence ;) ]

I know a chap who had a similar experience. When his summons arrived (Scottish law) he wrote back and stated that he was not on that road on the specified day and at the specified time----he heard no more about it, but in his case he had witnesses who could back him up-----their summonses were correct and they got done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

If you passed a 30mph sign after the point at which the officer zapped you, then you were not yet within the 30mph zone. Once inside a 30 zone there are no further "reminder" or "repeater" signs posted as with 40,50 or 60 speed limit areas which must have repeaters typically attached to lampposts every now and again.
