One of the saddest aspects of all this is that it is often the most vulnerable who are hit the hardest, especially since the compulsory introduction of direct benefit payments. Our daughter is a single mum on benefits and to loose £39.00 from a weeks money is a huge blow for the sake of being a few quid short until her money reaches the bank. It would be much fairer if they at least paid the dd instead of causing further financial difficulties for the customer. Surely their ethics in this must be questionable? Any thoughts? It would be interesting to see the banks figures on numbers of rejected dd's and whether they have increased significantly since the changes to benefit payments - anyone dare to ask them!!

Hi. Do you know that people on certain benefits are exempt from the small claims charges? Maybe she could sue without it costing her anything. My daughter is in similar situation and we have just sent the first letter to First Direct. If she has to go to court we will apply for exemption as she is on income support.

Thesad thing here is that even if they did pay the dd they would still send a letter informing your daughter they had done so - and then charge her about £30 for the payment and about £20 for the letter!

Which bank is it?

Maybe you would like to post specifically in the appropriate forum for her bank.

What you say about the hardhip caused is very true and there are many others. It has already been indicated to you that there is a waiver of Small Calims Fees in some cases but additionally your daughter may be eligible for new "legal aid" system presently in force.

The term Bank Ethics must be a mutually exclusive term. Outside of the UK hardships being caused by their greed and arrogance, they have much bigger sins to atone for(eg their involvement in 3rd world debt, arms etc etc the list is endless)

Natwests recent ads even demonstrate how other banks work(Im particularly reminded of the one with "shareholders bubbly")...this information must have been gathered by them.. so I wonder which bank(s) they are having a dig at? Any ideas out there?
