my daughters laptop screen is all cracked and theres an impressionist image on it now....the lcd is making pretty patterns but nothing else.

can you buy and have just the screen fitted to a lap top or are we gonna have to get a whole new laptop?

its an advent with 17 inch widescreen.

Advice given is my opinion only, I am not a legal or financial expert (far from it).

You could just get a new/second hand monitor and connect that to your laptop instead. But if you need the mobility of a laptop then ebay is a good place to get spares like that. I believe the screen can be replaced but not too sure how much it would be to have it replaced.

There is one here for £69.95 but that was practically the first one I looked at Monx. Just go on to ebay and type in Advent 17" screen.

There are quite a few.

Goodness thats why I have an old lappy in the cuboard. I was told by manufacturer that repair too costly, but maybe a local techy could look into it by sourcing a spare part from dead lappy with good screen. What we did for a while was bought cheap moniter (probably cheaper than new screan 300. I was quoted for toshiba) and attached keyboard by the wires and it worked for ages. Though obvioulsy not exactly portable.

Wow thanks for that! Poor girl is really down at the moment and finding her screen broken last night was the last straw.

I just dont have the money to buy a new one at the moment because weve just had the car fail the mot and that cost me £400 so a replacement screen is about all I could afford if that!

Thanks so much for the link Sod'em and the advice Louie :)

or you could borrow an external computer monitor/screen [often see for as little as £10 at boot sales] or use a tv with a vga socket on the back or buy a converter to use on your tv scart socket.

there are many cheap ways to use a laptop still that has a broken screen.

all laptop either have automactic detection one is plugged on the back socket or have a switch key on on of the number keys across the top pressed in conjuction wuth the blue Fn key.

Thanks so much for that, although we can use the tv for the time being its really the portability of the lappy that she wants so we will be opting for the replacement screen next month when we are a little more flush - because it is a 17inch screen the cheapest ive found is around £90! There is a great site out there that not only sell you the screen but once you have ordered it they let you watch a video that shows you how to remove the old one and then put the new one and promise that the video is so good they guarentee you can do it in twenty minutes or less!
