Hi new to this so here goes. i pay full council tax but was single my x girl friend moved out years ago and i didnt remove her name from council tax statment or apply for any discount ....i now have a new partner who has moved in now and wanted to make everything official so contacted the local council tax office to put her name on the council tax.they wanted to know where she stayed before but here is the prob she has not been registered at any address since 1993. what do we do? she stayed with her mum but was not registered there at all. do we put her as living there or not. aparantly her mum had claimed for a council tax rebate for 3 years and had claimed she was the only adult there when she had some cash probs but has payed full council tax for the last 5 years. what do we tell them please help as i dont want to open a can of worms

Have they told you why they want this information? It could be that they are asking because of the possibility that she was registered for council tax prior to moving in with you and they want to make sure any accounts are closed down, or that they want to link her to previous accounts.

It might be the case that you have to tell them the truth, but firstly find out why. You might be able to get away with telling them that she lived outside of their area, or that she lived at an address where she wasn't liable.

Hi

Welcome to The Consumer Action Group.

I am just letting you know that as you haven't had any replies to your post yet, it might be better if you post your message again in an appropriate sub-forum. You will get lots of help there.

Also take some time to read around the forum and get used to the layout. It is a big forum and takes a lot of getting used to.

Once you start to find your way, you will soon realise that it is fairly easy to get round and to get the help you need.

It can be bit confusing at first.

Please be advised that my time will be limited for the next few weeks. Thanks for your understanding.
