Well the Liberals now have a new leader....Tim Farron

Farron was once described as a ‘sanctimonious, god-bothering, treacherous little ****’ but backers say he is the right man to give the party a fresh start.

harman? other things aside, shes not in the leadership battle. or have i misread yr post

Quite true, conniff does seem to be blinded by Tory right wing rhetoric in these areas, but she should be.

She probably realised the left would scupper her chances as the so called right are trying to scupper corbyn - ripping the party apart even more than it is.

Back to my first post 'Labour really have had it haven't they'.

I hope I am wrong.

Harmans reasons for wanting abstention not opposition of Tory welfare cuts:

I don't think any would unite a heavily divided Labour party.

I think that Kendall would be a better bet not just for her policies and apparent beliefs, but that she might bring the young and disaffected back to Labour for another chance,

Trouble with that is she is not left wing enough for major power blocks in the Labour party or probably for 'active student bodies to promote.

It really does seem to be that the Labour party should split and perhaps work better as a coalition of parties in Westminster than as a (clearly NOT) single party.

A painful period for the Country as well as the Labour party if my suggestion does occur, but its seems very likely that the Tories are looking to win the next election (via sweeteners just before that the Tory hardcore and the stupid will rave about) without some miracle from whoever the next Labour leader is.

Just watching the 4 potential leaders on teh sunday politics.

How the hell could 4 people, potential leaders of a party, from the same party, be so fundamentally different different in their outlooks on the way foreward for the party?

So far only Liz Kendall seems to have shown any consistency, positive direction and party loyalty (without that loyalty refusing to admit wrong practices)

but they are all looking like a rabble rather than potential leaders.

Burnham mechanically reciting scripts - more of the same of what is wrong with Labour

Corbyn completely out of his depth

Cooper - the definition of whats wrong in Politics not just Labour

Kendall - best of the bunch but probably least able to unite Labour (I doubt anyone could)

At least Labour are having a leadership contest with debates. I cannot remember the Tories having such debates when Cameron was elected leader. Cameron was selected as someone who had worked for the parties central office, as well as previous ministers when they were in government. He was seen as the modern young image the party needed, able to deal with 24/7 media.

Labour should have better candidates. If i were voting, it would be a choice between Burnham and Cooper. I like Burnham, but worry that he would not have the organisational skills required to change the party. Cooper on the other hand is a ruthless operator, who would be much more in command of the party. Also Cooper would really make Cameron look a bit of a prat at PMQ's. She is very good at finding angles to attack opponents. Kendall is too inexperienced and Corbin too left wing for most voters.

Just watching the Politics show with Andy Burnham. With that amount of Mascara, eye shadow, foundation cream he has on looks like Quentin Crisp. The labour party needs to get rid of this Gleaming white teeth American style politics. People want normal people such as Jeremy Corbyn

I think its way past time the Labour party split into a left and right wing. They might work together better in Parliament as two parties than they do as one.

It seems impossible to me that Corbyn would lead Labour into government - other than as a weak opposition. Just consider how well the greens are doing with many of those policies?

Mind you, I can't see any of the others inspiring either.

It seems to me that Labour gift the Tories with government when they (Labour) should get by far the largest majority of the vote if they concentrated on the core working family vote rather than realistically unachievable albeit morally laudable social goals.

Just like the Tories have imposed these welfare cuts to refloat the economy on the backs of the poorest, Labour should be targeting the bankers, the tax evaders to refloat the country, and not with one liner rhetoric, with solid defined plans.

Then the votes would stream in and so would they (into govenment).

The politicians all talk about it but NONE are doing anything - all target the easy marks, which is the poor and unorganised.

whilst broad/differing opinions are healthy, i dont think a wholly (which it seems to be) split party wld bode well.

The crazyest thing is that the party seems to be not just worried, but actually afraid that someone who needed MP's to be 'talked into nominating' to even get into the contest might win it.

Madness.

It will all be forgotten, if Corbyn does not win.

I want a return of the SDP with the type of policies advocated by Shirley Williams, David Owen. Sensible left of centre politics, which attempts to look at the evidence to formulate policies.

There could be a new party formed by the progress side of Labour and the Lib Dems. Both Labour and Lib Dems cannot compete with the Tories financially, so they need to think of the best way to offer the electorate a left of centre choice.

My take is that if Labour splits into its 2 main parts, CENTRE/left and LEFT then although the Tories may still be the largest single party (vote wise), it would always be a minority Government,

I think we need much more of precisely that as a failsafe best of whats available at least until Labour can come up with a real plan of action that we could believe in.

They would all have to negotiate to get policies through.

Sounds great to me, but they all would undoubtedly find some way to turn a trick with it.

Labour have lost their sense of purpose. This is why Corbyn is being listened to, as he is a passionate Socialist. I am a Socialist believing in the strength of the many working together. I am in favour of market controls through regulation. I would like to see government investing in infrastructure and not selling so much to private companies who are often foreign.

The Tories believe in market competition without too much interference. They don't care about who owns or delivers services. They will sell off the countries assets, not thinking about the consequences 20 or 30 years time.

I am not sure that people in 30 years time will be happy if they are paying rent for their homes to some foreign corporation, paying water and gas bills to a foreign corporation, without the UK being able to do much, because it has all been sold off years before. This is the road the Tories are going down. Free market, but at what cost. Even the US would never allow this.

A very interesting huffington article which seems very relevant to this topic

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/joseph-finlay/jeremy-corbyn_b_7838596.html

I add that although the huff article is pro Left/Corbyn and presents the 'data' in a way positive to the Left/Corbyn, I do not agree with a number of the conclusions the writer posits even given his clear bias.

Despite this, I believe the article is worth reading and drawing your own conclusions.
