I received a letter this morning from Fredickson International demanding that I pay a small debt of £229.44, which they say I owe to a company called Simply Be From Candid (a sister company to JD Williams). I've looked up Simply Be and they are a catalogue for larger ladies. I'm very little so I've definitely never required their goods or services!

I believe possibly someone else may have run up this debt in my name probably at an old address as Fredickson had previously contacted me demanding that I call them to verify that I live at the address at which they are contacting me (I ignored them as I know they are a shady bunch and they had given me no info re any debt).

The letter I now have demands full payment within 7 days otherwise legal action will be considered. Obviously, if need be, I can prove where I have lived and when, which I assume would eliminate me from the frame (I think?!?) but I'm frightened to begin any sort of dialogue with them as I believe they can become nasty.

On the other hand, I don't want to ignore the issue because it won't go away of it's own accord and I don't want my good credit history tainted.

I would be eternally grateful for any advice.

Thank you in advance!

Have moved you to legal issues for the moment..

As you are obviously concerned about not doing anything. Perhaps just a very short letter advising that you have no knowledge of this debt and have never entered into an agreement with their client.

If they continue to harrass you in this manner you will be advising the OFT.

DO NOT SIGN THE LETTER by hand.. either digitally sign or PRINT your name.

Under no circumstances enter into any communication other than by writing. Do send any letters by Recorded delivery.

Hi

While Freds are easy to ignore, they have a tame solicitor called Bryan Carter who is quick to litigate. Should that happen, we have soooo many peeps here who have dealt with him (successfully)

Just because Freds say they have previously contacted you isn't necessarily true. This is probably a standard template letter.

Don't worry about there 7 days 'threat'

What I would do is report them to Trading standards and the OFT as since the new debt collection guidance came in, they have to be sure you are the debtor in question before contacting you
