Hi all,

I lived in a property with 4 other people (5 of us) for the last year and we moved out in July/August. I gave the electric company the final meter readings and they said they will calculate a final bill to pay. It came in on the weekend and I have got 2 of the house-mates rent, but I have no idea on how to contact the other 2.

The landlord won't give me the full names and/or addresses of the other 2. The bill is a large one and I can barely afford to pay my share of the bill, let alone the other 2 peoples share.

What position am I in to collect the remaining funds from the other house-mates? I have eventually got the names of the two names but no addresses. Do I get solicitors in to help me solve my problem? And do I get them on the landlord or tenants? And what can the electric company do?

Cheers in advance

Is the electric bill in your sole name? If so electric co will chase you for payment. LL unlikely to get involved as utilities resp of Ts.

If you were all student will College admin help. Otherwise use a tracing agency eg findamonkey at around £50 per name.

Way round any data protection excuse, write identical etters to 2 missing Ts, seal in 2 envelopes, write the rel name on each envelope, leave the address blank and affix correct postage to each. Then person with the info can write in the addresses & post without revealing addresses to you.

Well I spoke to the lanlord and he claims that one of the tenants has gone back home to USA and the other one won't answer his phone and if he needs to contact him he will call him on witheld number. And he claims to not have an address for him. I have rang the elec company and they have said they will check the bill again.

Shall I get solicitors involved to help my claim back the money?

Who would you intend suing? The landlord is not involved in this agreement. The 2 missing tenants are who you need to sue - but you need an address to obtain &/or enforce a court order. If one has gone to the states, you can forget him for now. You just need to find the one who is still in England (or Wales). Is he on Facebook? Do you have any mutual 'friends' who may know where he is? Do some detective work, but if you can't find him then you'll either have to give up or pay £50 to have him traced (no find no fee) at somewhere like www.findermonkey.co.uk

I'd also write to the other tenants along the lines of "A & B have done a runner, so you need to send me £X as we have to split the bills 3 ways". They have no responsibility to do so, but it's worth a try.
