i used a payday loan company some months ago, couldnt afford to repay so cancelled my debit card and hadnt heard anything for ages, then yesterday got a call on mobile, didnt know who it was so didnt answer then went online with their number and found out it was Castlebride, the people who had commented on this site (Who called me.com) said this company had taken money from their bank account whilst not having correct debit card details.

got a letter this morning saying "we are noe enforcing your agreement with ................... and as per the terms of the agreement we will attempt to deduct payment from your debit card and will continue the attempts to deduct the payment from your card until full balance has been paid"

they phoned again just now and said who they were, i said all communication in writing, he said we have written can you com=nfirm your details, i said no all communication in writing.

From reading the comments on where i found the number was from it seems this company CAN just take money from your account/debit card.

Surely if my debit card (previous one) is no longer valid as i stopped it and got new one they cannot just take money, i just dont know, please help if you can

Hi Lamb

You haven't given them permission to deduct monies from your card. There is a security feature on the back of your card. The CVV code, the three digits. They haven't got authority to store that information. Whenever

you make a payment that code is requested. You need to call the Fraud Dept of your card provider, explain that you have not given permission.

Many thanks for your reply, so I am assuming they can still do this even with a card number that is no longer valid? Can they take it direct from my bank account as I'm assuming they have my account number and sort code also?

Simply get in touch with your card provider & ask them to put a block on it/cancel it asap - then order a new one and do not give the new details out to anyone.

Ask to have the security details on your bank account changed as well.

I have a new one since I took out the loan, i cancelled the card I had when I took out the loan when I realised I couldnt pay it back and asked for a new one so they dont have my present card details, is that ok?

I've also had problems with Castlebridge. They took £354, without my consent, off a cancelled Halifax debit card. The debit card was cancelled 6 months earlier, on the advice of the bank, in an attempt ot stop PDL's taking large sums of money from me and making my account overdrawn. Halifax wouldn't do anything about Castlebridge as when they looked into it, I had given the origninal card details to the PDL company , so they didn't see it as fraud. After complaining to Castlebridge and also to the Financial Ombudsmen, the money was returned in full.

Don't trust them, they will try take money from your account in whatever way they can. I would strongly advise you to open a new bank account and get your wages paid into there and get any overdrafts removed. (I've had to put a block on my original account as another PDL company tried to set up a DD, even though I am on a DMP and making monthly payments to them!) I know this probably seems like a hassle but I believe that it's the only way to be 100% certain that PDL companies won't take your money.

Communicate with your bank/card supplier and make absolutely sure that they will not do this. I once had a card 'declined' and it was tried twice and declined again. I telephoned the bank who could not tell me why as there were sufficient funds, I asked the merchant to try one more time and they said they could not as it was company policy, because with certain cards, there is a way (I was not informed how) to 'force' a card through, so am wondering if that might be something that this lot have the knowledge to do?
